too good to go food waste app - anyone else use it?

Huge fan of this app - friend told me about it over lockdown and after I'd had my first "magic bag" I was hooked! The basic idea is that you pay for a lucky bag of food from a local retailer which would otherwise have gone in the bin. Picked up a bag from a M&S petrol station shop last night, cost me £4, got two large packs of salmon, two panini wraps, two packs of sandwiches, a side salad, a bag of mixed veg, and a pack of melon. Greggs also do bags which the kids enjoy - most of the bags we've had from there have a couple of the bakes, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries.

Yes it's all short-dated, yellow sticker stuff but lots can be frozen. Or eaten the next day. Definitely worth looking at if you're flexible about what you eat. Lots of restaurants do it too, although pick up times can be much later in the evening.

Any other fans???

I splurged for two bags today - another gorgeous loaf of olive bread, 4 burgers, spinach, broccoli, roasted veg and a few pasties and samosas. A pack of two pasties alone would have been £7.50!

Where's that from @HoollyWugger? Looks great!

@clary

Where's that from *@HoollyWugger*? Looks great!
It's from a local butcher/deli/bakery kind of place attached to a garden centre/restaurant. All locally sourced foods etc - really tasty.

Here's a snap of today's Morrison's box, what a treat. About half of it isn't even past the date (not that I generally pay much attention to that anyway) Grin

How much was that lot?

clary · 19/08/2021 21:33

Got a Greg's bag today, two baguettes, three doughnuts and two sweet pastries, pretty good for 2.59, tbh would give that for one sandwich.

That Morrisons one is awesome!

WaitingforToto · 19/08/2021 21:51

£3.09! Three pounds and nine pence! What a joy, I'm just so pleased to save it from landfill Smile

My partner runs a food waste charity. He collects stuff every week from various sources, he uses all the apps and distributes them in our village. The m&s stuff is always a hit. Theres often flowers as well as food

I tnink a lot or communities have one now. Ifs about reducing waste.

TheGenealogist · 20/08/2021 09:55

I think Morrisons are definitely winning the "best bag" awards. Closely followed by Greggs.

Based on this thread I downloaded the app a couple weeks ago but our small town only had Gregg’s, Costa, and Starbucks so we didn’t go for them.

I checked again last night while catching up on the thread and it seems like our local Morrison’s has thrown its hat in the ring but they didn’t have bags last night. I’ll keep checking and hoping they have them.

catchyjem · 21/08/2021 09:29

Thanks to this thread I had a look an ordered a Wenzel's bag for £3.50. Very happy with an Oreo doughnut, 2 enormous yum yum s, 2 cinnamon swirls, 2 iced cupcakes, 1 tuna salad sandwich, 1 ham and cheese sandwich and 1 chicken and bacon sandwich. The sandwiches alone were all labelled £2.75. All fresh and delicious, what a bargain!

TheGenealogist · 21/08/2021 09:52

Another good bag from M&S last night.

Large cheese and ham pizza
Pack of mini cooked sausages
Moroccan chicken, harissa and couscous salad
4 small posh sausage rolls
Individual raspberry jelly pot
Bag of salad leaves

Morrisons
The only things I had to throw were the little bags of sliced apple.

Blimey!
Very impressive! Shock

Wildernesstips · 22/08/2021 03:33

I picked one up from Budgens yesterday and was impressed:
Smoked haddock fish cakes
Sausages
Pepperoni pizza
Coleslaw
Bread
2 cinnamon buns
Custard doughnuts
Cauliflower cheese
Dauphinois potatoes

The timing was better than the M&S one I had previously too.

TooGoodToGoNewbie · 22/08/2021 19:56

Greggs
Steak bake was still warm. Still not as generous as some I’ve seen on here but my two are happy.

I have seen that Morrison’s, the next town over, has a bag left for collection from

‘Tomorrow 00.00 -12.00’

Isn’t that unusual timing? Is it because it’s Sunday so the night shelf stackers will skip everything out as they are filling with new stock?

When you collect from Morrison’s do they go and get it from the back chiller or something? The thought of it sitting behind customer services waiting to be collected is putting me off tbh

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 22/08/2021 21:59

Usually you stand at customer services for ages while they disappear into the bowels of the store and stick veg in a box. Our Morrison's no longer do them and they really weren't worth the fight to be the first to secure the box at 18.16 exactly.

The ones I've collected have always just been at customer services but are cold when you feel them!

What have you done? When I weigh 50stone i'll blame this thread. 😆

Download the app a few days ago thanks to this thread and now have a belly full of Greggs. And have ordered another bag for tomorrow! I'm going to get so fat. Grin

I got
4 sausage rolls
Scotch pie
2 doughnuts
2 yum-yums
A big fancy chicken roll
all for £2.59

MorriseysGladioli · 23/08/2021 19:25

Bargain! Grin

Tommika · 24/08/2021 22:57

Previously I’ve just gone for hotel breakfasts on TooGoodToGo, but I opted for an M&S garage bag tonight:

Cost £4
Full price value £16.05
Reduced price markings £4.98
So I could have in theory scavenged the reduce price items and made my own choices for not much difference, but a good haul in a fairly hefty bag:

Sausages
Peri peri chicken wings
Strawberry’s
Apple turnovers
Strawberry trifles

Most are marked use by today, and the strawberries are best before today

Had my first go at this yesterday with the local Starbucks. £5 got us:

Five cheese toastie
Chicken and egg protein pot
Bacon roll
Sprinkle cookie
Cinnamon roll
Chocolate muffin
2x slices of some kind of loaf cake
10 brownies
4 blondies

Think it must be beginner's luck - the girl even commented 'it's a big one today!'. Brownies should keep a few days.
