too good to go food waste app - anyone else use it?

Huge fan of this app - friend told me about it over lockdown and after I'd had my first "magic bag" I was hooked! The basic idea is that you pay for a lucky bag of food from a local retailer which would otherwise have gone in the bin. Picked up a bag from a M&S petrol station shop last night, cost me £4, got two large packs of salmon, two panini wraps, two packs of sandwiches, a side salad, a bag of mixed veg, and a pack of melon. Greggs also do bags which the kids enjoy - most of the bags we've had from there have a couple of the bakes, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries.

Yes it's all short-dated, yellow sticker stuff but lots can be frozen. Or eaten the next day. Definitely worth looking at if you're flexible about what you eat. Lots of restaurants do it too, although pick up times can be much later in the evening.

Any other fans???

Our Sainsbury’s don’t do them either just about 7 Spar shops & Greggs.

I just bagged a Greggs for tomorrow to help me over the M&S bag envy.

Tiddleztheelephant · 09/08/2021 19:42

@Hippywannabe

Got my Costa bag. 2 Cheese and tomato toasties, 1 Caesar salad and an egg sandwich. Not overly impressed but it was only £3. Have booked a bakery one for tomorrow.
That's been my experience of Costa too, 2 toasties and a sandwich..... nice enough for £3 but won't make me rush back.

I had my first bag that I complained about the other day.
Greggs:
2 pasties (had to cut into them to find out what they were)
A single sausage roll and a tiny pot of fruit salad.

The place was deserted and the bag was handed to me by a guy who was putting the bins out and had a sack of rubbish in his other hand Confused

@GrrRightBackAtYou

Why doesn’t our M & S do magic bags? Sad
It's only the petrol station M&S shops, the ones at a BP filling station. Or it is in this area anyway.

Picked up a Costa bag this afternoon. Ate the muffin and the rest is in the freezer.

DaxtheDestroyer · 09/08/2021 21:18

How much is the Costa bag supposed to be worth @Seeingadistance?

Today's bag was cancelled so I've tried again for tomorrow, reserved a greggs and a parsons bag so fingers crossed.

Seeingadistance · 09/08/2021 21:45

The Costa bag is supposed to be worth £10. I got it for free.

Got a lovely Magic bag from M&S tonight with loads of watermelon, which I love!

I saw a thing that looked like a vending machine in a local shop with the Karma logo on it. Is that how they call come? This place only does sushi and I’m not brave enough to buy ‘rescued’ sushi!

Hippywannabe · 10/08/2021 16:09

Just got my bakery bag from Warren's Bakery in Plymouth. Suffice to say, I shan't bother again.
It contained 1 small rock hard loaf, 3 tiny iced ring doughnuts, 2 tiny cartons of juice and was supposed to contain an individual quiche. That was missing,, I went back and asked about it and the woman furiously said she must have put it in the wrong bag and reluctantly gave me a small pasty.
I think I probably could have got the same fresh food for the same price at Lidl. In fact, I am going to go to Lidl tomorrow and cost it up.

GrrRightBackAtYou · 10/08/2021 16:50

Bit disappointed with my Greggs bag.

I ham baguette
I steak slice
I Belgian bun
I filled doughnut with icing on.

Does that seem like £8.95 worth?

clary · 10/08/2021 17:01

Great Costa haul for £3 - four muffins, 2 x cheese ployghmans sandwiches and 2x chicken salad sandwiches, nice service too

MorriseysGladioli · 10/08/2021 18:51

Oh that is good!
I'm still trying to synchronise finishing work and popping into a shop on my way home.
@GrrRightBackAtYou

That seems a poor amount for that price, I'd say.

DaxtheDestroyer · 10/08/2021 20:42

We've had a parsons and greggs bags today. Greggs had 4 custard doughnuts, 2 pastries, 2 baguette sandwiches, 2 sausage rolls and a pot of grapes for £2.59
Parsons had 4 jam doughnuts, 3 pastries, 2 pasties, 4x small baguettes, 2 fancy French stick things and a seedy grainy loaf for £3.99. Really happy with both.

We are overloaded! Most has gone in the freezer

I know it's random and dependant on what they have left but we had 2 belgian buns and 4 filled doughnuts and 2 baguette sandwiches plus more today so yours does seem very light in comparison.
JaneyHenderson · 10/08/2021 21:03

Got my first Gregg's today! Not bad: four doughnuts, two yum yums, a chicken sandwich and a bun!
Going to try Costa next. Morrison's was crap last week.

Boobahs · 11/08/2021 08:22

Managed to snag an elusive Greggs bag!

Chocolate donut
Jammy biscuit
Ham and cheese baguette
3 plain baguettes
Chicken bake
Vegan sausage roll
Vegan sausage and bean bake

Impressed for £2.59!

Seeingadistance · 11/08/2021 10:07

@lineeyesneeded

Oops! That should read three, not free!

Oh!!
I thought there was some trick to get free bags GrinWink

clary · 11/08/2021 10:40

Co op has started doing them in my area too which is great as there are several stores nearby. Last night got 2 x big tubs yogurt, punnet nectarines, bag pears (both nowhere near ripe so lots of life left), some rolls, chicken pasta thing (scoffed by 18yo ds) and two jammy dodger muffins. For £4 pretty good.

Costa best so far. Must not do one today as have lots of food now!

GrrRightBackAtYou · 11/08/2021 14:05

@DaxtheDestroyer mine does seem a bit mean compared to what you @JaneyHenderson and @Boobahs were given in your bags!

I will give it another go next week & see if it’s any better

MorriseysGladioli · 11/08/2021 18:42

I just got a morrisons bag for tomorrow.
Yipee!
A bit out of my way and will have to hang around till bag time.
Still, a bargain, I hope.

MorriseysGladioli · 11/08/2021 18:59

Oh balls!
It's just been cancelled.

YouReallyAre · 11/08/2021 22:12

With the Co-op bags, if it is made up of yellow sticker items, would it be possible to have gone into the shop prior to collection and bought the items cheaper due to the reductions?

I went to our Co-op tonight to collect a bag and they didn't have enough items of value to give me so I had to leave without anything. I have sent an email explaining this.

TheGenealogist · 12/08/2021 15:47

I have a Starbucks bag reserved for later, at an out of town shopping centre. Will take DS on a driving lesson, he is getting really good at ferrying me round Too good to go locations!
