Huge fan of this app - friend told me about it over lockdown and after I'd had my first "magic bag" I was hooked! The basic idea is that you pay for a lucky bag of food from a local retailer which would otherwise have gone in the bin. Picked up a bag from a M&S petrol station shop last night, cost me £4, got two large packs of salmon, two panini wraps, two packs of sandwiches, a side salad, a bag of mixed veg, and a pack of melon. Greggs also do bags which the kids enjoy - most of the bags we've had from there have a couple of the bakes, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries.

Yes it's all short-dated, yellow sticker stuff but lots can be frozen. Or eaten the next day. Definitely worth looking at if you're flexible about what you eat. Lots of restaurants do it too, although pick up times can be much later in the evening.

Any other fans???

Curses I missed the Greggs bag. I had been checking periodically then missed it by 5 mins.

CrocodilesCry · 07/08/2021 22:05

I got a Morrison’s bag today - I got Two bags of carrots, six lettuces, celery, tomatoes Chinese cabbage, sage, potatoes, apricots and a kilo of grapes.

Two of the lettuces were slimy and the potatoes were a bit green but other that it was ok, would have preferred more variety than just veg/fruit but can’t grumble.

I’ve had to stop getting the greggs bags though because they had so much nice stuff in them (3 baguettes, six doughnuts, up to six slices/pasties plus muffins and gingerbread men) 😂

VenusSap · 07/08/2021 23:02

I got a Morrison’s daily bag today.

This was the first time the bloke had to actually go and walk around the shop and pack it! It’s always normally been ready for me. I wish he would let me pick instead 😂

It isn’t too bad for £3.29.

Sausage rolls for lunch tomorrow. Crumpets for breakfast. Apples as a snack.

My daughter was delighted with the mini pizza though. I think the ice burg lettuce bag was only chucked in as it looks like it’s starting to go over already even though it’s dated the 10th.

I've created a monster by introducing my retired dad to it. He found a carvery and is over the moon, he was already an Aldi bargain hunter, this might be lethal Grin

Got the app a few hours ago after coming across this thread. Have reserved a magic bag from M&S to pick up 9pm on Sunday night. Very excited!

DancesWithFelines · 08/08/2021 02:52

Been watching this thread for a few days, have had decent bags in the past. Best one ever from M&S tonight though!

Pack of sushi
Cheese and ham pizza
Beef and onion baguette
Extra special cheese and onion ciabatta
Pack of cooked BBQ drumsticks
Vegan coleslaw
Raspberries
4 apples

I think we worked it out at about £27 worth of food for £4.

What were the sell by dates like?

clary · 08/08/2021 09:57

@KittenKong

What were the sell by dates like?
As far as I can tell they are always sell by that day, that's kind of the point.

IME a sandwich sell by Saturday is fine to eat on Sunday tho. Oranges fine for a few days. Meat can go in the freezer. You get the idea.

KittenKong · 08/08/2021 10:13

I’m only fussy when it comes to raw chicken or fish. Sell bys are usually fine - apart from M&S vegan sausages which go mouldy really fast (hacked off because for two weeks running I bought them during the week for Sunday breakfast and found white mould on them a day after sell by).

Walkinginawingingwonderland · 08/08/2021 10:16

So jealous of so many of these. It’s pretty much just Spar where I live and they’re distinctly underwhelming.

TheGenealogist · 08/08/2021 10:29

Usually it's stuff that is going out of date that day. Obviously doesn't really matter with fruit/veg. Meat I'm happy to cook and eat the following day, if we're not going to use it then, it'll go in the freezer. Sandwiches the next day are fine, other things last much longer - we had a Gregg's bag once with 4 sausage rolls, only DS like them, he had one every day for lunch and kept in the fridge they were fine.

DaxtheDestroyer · 08/08/2021 18:49

Reserved another bakery one for tomorrow - missed Greggs though.

Seeingadistance · 08/08/2021 21:55

Happy with this lot from M&S!

TheGenealogist · 08/08/2021 21:59

We have another Gregg's bag for tomorrow, I'm trying to limit buying them as they really aren't the healthiest but the kids are huge fans.

Seeingadistance · 08/08/2021 22:27

And I’ve booked another one for tomorrow! This is addictive!

VenusSap · 08/08/2021 22:55

I want a m&s near me :(

NotMyCat · 08/08/2021 23:32

Ooh @Returnoftheowl I would eat all of that!
No M&S near me sadly

TheGenealogist · 09/08/2021 16:49

Today's bag from greggs - two bags actually as we've had rain if biblical proportions in Glasgow and people obviously didn't fancy venturing out.

1 feta and tomato pasta
1 chicken and bacon pasta
1 tuna crunch pasta
1 ham and cheese baguette
1 tandoori chicken baguette
2 steak bakes
2 pink iced doughnuts.

Lunch for about 3 days sorted.

I did find Morrisons bags yesterday but I was at work.
Also a spar bag, but 4 miles away, and from 7pm, so I swerved that.
I shall keep trying though!

Hippywannabe · 09/08/2021 18:16

Got my Costa bag. 2 Cheese and tomato toasties, 1 Caesar salad and an egg sandwich.
Not overly impressed but it was only £3.
Have booked a bakery one for tomorrow.

clary · 09/08/2021 19:19

Little Waitrose have cancelled my bag Sad luckily I still have Starbucks

GrrRightBackAtYou · 09/08/2021 19:25

Why doesn’t our M & S do magic bags? Sad

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 09/08/2021 19:27

Mine either or Sainsbury’s! There’s a lot of Spar’s in my area that do them but not the one near me!
