Is this an ‘ageing’ hairstyle for someone nearly 50?

I love this cut, I showed it to a colleague and she said it’s a ‘Karen’. I hate that phrase and can’t understand why it’s been attributed to women with short hair??

My hair is already short, think chin length all the way around but I’d love a complete change.

WWYD? Is it a nice cut? And how easy is it to do? I don’t want to ask my hairdresser for something she will struggle to do.

No I think it's nice but wld take a lot of styling. I couldn't get a haircut like that as I would never be able to blow dry it into that style!

Pinknoise · 17/07/2021 11:06

I agree that you could go darker and grow it a bit.

AnyFucker · 17/07/2021 11:09

I don’t think that dated 90’s style will suit you

I think something like this would be have a feeling of what you like but much nicer and there is some undercutting at the back but softer round the face and nice depth with the colour.

CaraherEIL · 17/07/2021 11:32

Also I think aim for the hairstyle for a new you, I think if you have a great haircut it can kick start a diet/ wardrobe revamp etc, I think if you do the same old same old you won’t feel as inspired.

Hathertonhariden · 17/07/2021 11:33

That style would be great for an audition for the Bay City Rollers...

Girlmum89 · 17/07/2021 11:36

It’s definitely a ‘Karen’ cut. I’d say the ultimate Karen cut. But if it suits you, who cares! Go for it!

Hathertonhariden · 17/07/2021 11:38

@Bagelsandbrie

Well a short shaggy mullet is what’s “in” in terms of short hair.. like this….

But at the end of the day you need to do what feels comfortable for you! I don’t like the whole mullet thing personally.

The other big thing is shaggy layered long hair. Like a grown out mullet.

That image is the Bay City Rollers cut

I like these cuts but you have to style them and use products to get them to look like the pictures. It looks shit normally if you don't. I asked my hair dresser for this last time I went.

I like the style @swedishedith posted it.
I recently got a bit of a shag and it's made my hair go REALLY curly, which at 51 would have been my nightmare 'do' five years ago. But now, I just think, ok, go big with these curls.

ItPearl · 17/07/2021 11:44

@AlwaysLatte

I was intrigued about this Karen stuff. I just showed my 13 year old these pics and said should I style my hair like this and he immediately said no way, I'd look like a Karen. I then asked my 11 year old who said 'that is a Karen haircut. Karens are angry people who get annoyed for no reason'. 😂😂😂 I think the advice then is to ask the kids!!
Wow, my daughter knows that the whole ''karen'' thing is just another stick to beat middle aged women with. My DD is 18 though so older than 13 I know. But I wouldn't be laughing at the fact that your DC are jumping on a bandwagon to laugh at middle aged women Confused
Thirtyrock39 · 17/07/2021 11:45

Those mullet haircuts someone posted are terrible and genuinely would only suit someone young and model like . I really like the Sharon stone type cut . I would personally not be put off by the Karen thing as I do think it's similar to the side partings/ skinny jeans thing in that it's more important what suits you than what's in fashion but I think those first haircuts are the type that look great in the hairdressers but are hard to maintain. I struggle to explain what I want from a haircut but go for layers now which look good even when due for a cut and actually look better a few weeks after they've been done

RaindropsOnRosie · 17/07/2021 11:52

That haircut would look lovely with darker hair. The Karen cut usually involves blonde hair or very chunky highlights (and the attitude of course).

ahoyshipmates · 17/07/2021 11:54

I feel really sorry for people actually called Karen, and I find it unfathomable that the use of a woman's name as a misogynistic sexist put-down insult is so easily used and perpetuated on a forum largely used by women.

MrsFin · 17/07/2021 11:57

I think it's a dated style rather than ageing as such.
I'd say it was a bit 90s

Another one shocked and dismayed at the perpetuating of ageism and misogyny on this thread.

Well i had that cut once and unfortunately a hair cut didnt make me any more assertive
thinkingaboutitall · 17/07/2021 12:06

I think the stereotypical Karen hair cut is longer - almost like an asymmetrical bob. And yeah, the chunky highlights. It’s just a stereotype on social media tho, no one actually pays attention to these things in real life

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2021 12:10

I thought Karen was just a vile, sexist, ageist insult, I never knew it was also a perfectly acceptable haircut that people can enjoy taking the piss out of too...Hmm

Ilikeknitting · 17/07/2021 12:12

If you like it, then go for it!

The joy of hair is, nothing you do is permanent.

I hate short hair, it looks awful on me, but you do you.

Chikapu · 17/07/2021 12:20

I think you need a slim, well-defined face to pull something like that off and it is horribly dated.

Lunificent · 17/07/2021 12:20

Toasted Cheese. If you can afford it, go somewhere expensive and fashionable and get their advice on a short hair cut.
I agree with the poster about Japanese short hair pics. They’re great inspiration and will usually be up to date and stylish.

unwuthering · 17/07/2021 12:24

I think your hair is pretty the way it is now. I don't think that cut would suit you, and it would involve endless faff with product and blow drying to look like those pictures - and you'd end up with a look that does suggest you want to bustle about and speak to the manager.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 17/07/2021 12:28

Very very dated. I remember that style being fashionable in the early 90s. I think a softer less over styled version would look much nicer.
