Is this an ‘ageing’ hairstyle for someone nearly 50?

I love this cut, I showed it to a colleague and she said it’s a ‘Karen’. I hate that phrase and can’t understand why it’s been attributed to women with short hair??

My hair is already short, think chin length all the way around but I’d love a complete change.

WWYD? Is it a nice cut? And how easy is it to do? I don’t want to ask my hairdresser for something she will struggle to do.

I don't think it's ageing but personally not keen on the style.

Crispsareafoodgroup · 17/07/2021 08:21

It’s a nice cut. If you think it’ll suit you, go for it.

I wouldn't go that colour (because I've very dark hair and light doesn't suit me) but I love it.

UndeadSlut · 17/07/2021 08:23

It's not all short hair that the name "Karen" has been attributed to, it's that particular inverted bob style. I am of the opinion that if you like it you should go for it, but it depends how you feel about the constant "Karen haircut" memes and comments.

RubyFowler · 17/07/2021 08:24

It is known as a 'karen' haircut unfortunately, silly though it is.

UndeadSlut · 17/07/2021 08:25

The first picture in your second post is less "Karen" because it's not all lifted at the back, it's nicer in my opinion.

linerforlife · 17/07/2021 08:25

It's a very dated look OP, and yes would be ageing. It is associated with the meme "Karen" (which I hate too) and is also called the "I want to speak to the manager" haircut. Neither of these are positive things. It's probably the most unfashionable hairstyle you could get at the moment. Genuinely even the mullet is having a revival and yet this hairstyle is currently less stylish.

Divebar2021 · 17/07/2021 08:25

Sorry it looks a bit dated to me. I don’t think short hair on women is ageing but I don’t like that particular cut. There’s too much busy-ness going on I think. She’s saying it’s a “Karen” because of the cut which is longer on one side. I think a pixie cut can be very chic though so I don’t think it would need much tweaking.

Divebar2021 · 17/07/2021 08:27

And to add… if your hairdresser can’t handle that I’d be looking for a new one.

MrsBungle · 17/07/2021 08:29

I think that’s a really aging hair cut.

Toastedcheese · 17/07/2021 08:29

Ah no, I did wonder if this might have been the case.
So, what should I be thinking of? Any pics for inspiration please? I keep coming back to this kind of style.
I don’t want cropped pixie, my face isn’t small enough for that.

Ideas please!! 🙏

I had this hairstyle all through my 30's, I loved it and it really suited me. Unfortunately due to the Karen meme I've ditched it. Its nice to have a change anyway. I've now got a chin length blunt bob, all one length.

So yes it is unfashionable but if you like it then go for it!

20viona · 17/07/2021 08:29

It's an absolute Karen.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 17/07/2021 08:30

I've always loves that style and it really suits me. I'm 51. I have alternated between that and a long layered bob for most of my adult life. I remember when Victoria Beckham had her hair cut like it in the late 90's all my work colleagues said she has stolen my hair style!

My DS15 has banned me from having it styled like it ever again - he said I can't have a Karen as a mum.

Luckily lockdown has meant I had no choice but to grow my hair out and I'm enjoying my long hair for a while.

PrincessMyshkin · 17/07/2021 08:30

It's pretty dated. If you really like it though I would think most hairdressers have done dozens of these over the past 15 years so shouldn't be too much trouble

user1471538283 · 17/07/2021 08:31

I think its dated and a bit ageing.

gogohm · 17/07/2021 08:32

Have a cut that suits you! Personally (sane age) I'm refusing to grow older gracefully and still have longer hair despite my mum telling me I'm too old (also refusing to dye it)

lljkk · 17/07/2021 08:39

Grunge is coming back in, isn't it? Who wants to be "fashionable" in next 5 years, honestly.

Go for it if you know it suits you, OP. I still like that sort of cut and it looks smart on many people.

Margaret Thatcher's hairstyles are what I'd call dated - lots of older ladies still have "smart" hairstyles like this.

DoTheNextRightThing · 17/07/2021 08:39

It's also known as the "can I speak to the manager?" haircut

Toastedcheese · 17/07/2021 08:41

Unfortunately that style actually suits me, I have swung between that and a ‘Kate Silverton’ with flicky out sides / back for years.

Due to lockdown though it’s been a lot longer lately but my hair is fine and it’s got quite ratty. It now needs a really good cut.

Am at a loss ☹️

Well a short shaggy mullet is what’s “in” in terms of short hair.. like this….

But at the end of the day you need to do what feels comfortable for you! I don’t like the whole mullet thing personally.

The other big thing is shaggy layered long hair. Like a grown out mullet.

lastqueenofscotland · 17/07/2021 08:42

It is definitely known as the I want to speak to the manager haircut!!
It’s possibly the least fashionable cut you could possibly get

SwedishEdith · 17/07/2021 08:54

This is similar but softer and more flattering. If you Google 'Japanese short hair' you'll find lots of softer cuts like that.

Couchbettato · 17/07/2021 08:56

I'd go for a Bob but a straight cut Bob rather than a short layered Bob. Or at the very least a long layered Bob. No fringe though. Something that softens the facial features.
