Is this an ‘ageing’ hairstyle for someone nearly 50?

I love this cut, I showed it to a colleague and she said it’s a ‘Karen’. I hate that phrase and can’t understand why it’s been attributed to women with short hair??

My hair is already short, think chin length all the way around but I’d love a complete change.

WWYD? Is it a nice cut? And how easy is it to do? I don’t want to ask my hairdresser for something she will struggle to do.

Yes I think so. A few of my older female relatives in their 60's and 70's have similar cuts. They look fab, on them. At nearly 50 my hair is very long and I've no intention of going for the chop any time soon!

catfunk · 17/07/2021 09:03

I do think it's very dated, it was very fashionable about 20 years ago and the younger generations have moved onto other haircuts now. It's the volume at the back that's the issue!

Im not keen personally. But if you like it go for it. I dont think its ageing.

DotDotDotDot · 17/07/2021 09:13

Agree with PPs, it's a dated look now. I'd go with a blunt bob, no fringe, and style it messy - not dead straight.

Divebar2021 · 17/07/2021 09:19

I’ve been growing mine in lockdown so my eye might not be “in” so far as short haircuts but Sharon Stone and Michelle Williams have both had very chic short haircuts. The wavy bob is also cool especially if slightly undone looking.

Tell your hairdresser what you like about it and asknfor their suggestions - they could do you a modern version.

Some kind of Shag mullet Bob? Pics of Sharon stone and Michelle Williams are v cool and flattering

Wetcappuccino · 17/07/2021 09:29

It reminds me of Kate Gosselin. It is a bit dated in my opinion. Maybe a pixie cut?

Yes, these are SO much nicer!
CrowdedMouse · 17/07/2021 10:25

Controversial on MN but ... I think a lot of women/girls should go for the chop because not all faces or texture suit long hair.

I don't think the cut OP linked is nice though. Google Charlene of Monaco - she has short fine hair that looks fab in loads of different styles. (Admittedly not lately but I think she's rebelling against royal life...)

Toastedcheese · 17/07/2021 10:28

Well here goes, here’s my hair on real life, fine but with a bit of wave.

I usually blow dry it straight and hot brush it, today as I’m going to the hairdresser anyway I’ve just lightly scrunched it.

I have no clue what to ask for.

Short hair is more work than long hair and the first images I do like but I always think they're 'clone' hairdo - shops at M&S,/Coast/Next all round general do-gooder and nice person but with no mind of their own. If you're that person then go for it it looks fab.

onceivepostedidontcomeback · 17/07/2021 10:30

Seeing your own style, I'd grow it a tiny bit longer, get rid of some of the blond and you're good to go. We're probably the same age and body type and a relaxed look suits better!

Dillydollydingdong · 17/07/2021 10:32

It's nice but I wouldn't have it.

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 17/07/2021 10:35

It’s a nice cut. It’s probably very complicated to do but hairdressers make it look easy! I’m sure your hairdresser is more than capable of this cut. It can be very flattering.
As for the ‘karen’ my kids said I got my hair cut like ‘Karen’ and it was longer than chin length so......

spotcheck · 17/07/2021 10:35

I think if it looks good on you, it will Always look fresh.

OP
If you want it, get it. Seriously. Worse Case scenario, you'll have two months of regret.

Just do it

AlwaysLatte · 17/07/2021 10:36

I don't think it's ageing but it definitely requires a defined bone structure and wouldn't look good on someone overweight. Then it would look ageing.

Love these!
AlwaysLatte · 17/07/2021 10:37

I didn't know this was known as a 'Karen' hairstyle! I have a friend called Karen with this exact cut!!

Toastedcheese · 17/07/2021 10:38

Yeah that’s the thing, I’ve gained almost a stone over lockdown too that now won’t shift.

I think I’ll just have my usual highlights and a trim today, probably a bit more forgiving with my fat face.

I was intrigued about this Karen stuff. I just showed my 13 year old these pics and said should I style my hair like this and he immediately said no way, I'd look like a Karen. I then asked my 11 year old who said 'that is a Karen haircut. Karens are angry people who get annoyed for no reason'.
😂😂😂
I think the advice then is to ask the kids!!

thinkingaboutitall · 17/07/2021 10:47

It’s not the cut that’s ageing, it’s the colour

If your colour is meh, the cut will age you as if sort of highlights the colour. The photos you have posted all show women with impeccable hair colour.

Gertie75 · 17/07/2021 10:47

I like your hair as it is now and think the wave is lovely, could you maybe have a colour change instead of a style change?
Maybe go dark and glossy.

WeatherwaxOn · 17/07/2021 11:01

Whilst I think that you should wear your hair however you like it, I have seen a lot of women in my wider social circle (aged 70+) with very similar haircuts to the first photos you posted.
Again, that shouldn't really make a difference, but possibly worth exploring similar options. One of our local hairdressers used to do really long consultations with very good input as to what styles suited what face shapes & lifestyles.

2andahalfpints · 17/07/2021 11:03

I would go a little bit darker and grow it so it just touches your shoulders, your natural texture is lovely and then you could use it to your advantage
