Is this an ‘ageing’ hairstyle for someone nearly 50?

I love this cut, I showed it to a colleague and she said it’s a ‘Karen’. I hate that phrase and can’t understand why it’s been attributed to women with short hair??

My hair is already short, think chin length all the way around but I’d love a complete change.

WWYD? Is it a nice cut? And how easy is it to do? I don’t want to ask my hairdresser for something she will struggle to do.

As the only person I know with that haircut is in her 70s, has had that cut for years and to whom the phrase "mutton dressed as lamb" can be attributed then personally I would avoid.

mintich · 17/07/2021 13:31

I think Emma Willis' short hair is probably more what you are after

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/07/2021 13:34

Just get whatever cut works for your hair and your face - and (if I were you) doesn't take forever to get ready every day. I'm an extremely low maintenance hair"style" sort of person - comb it and go, that's all I can be arsed to do on a daily basis - so I still have long hair and usually have it up in a ponytail or bun thing. I also have thin, fine hair with a bit of a wave and wouldn't have short hair if you paid me - too flyaway! - but if you're happy to put the work in, go for it.

I feel like you should just get whatever cut you want. People saying it's 90s as if you can't just have that hair now. Idiots calling it 'Karen' haircut as if their opinion is worth anything. Just choose the cut you like. For you.

CommanderBurnham · 17/07/2021 13:38

Your hair is good as it is. Maybe ask for some waves to be put it in or change your parting slightly to bring it up to date.

I can't see your jawline but shorter hair will accentuate a jaw line and any jowls.

@ahoyshipmates

I feel really sorry for people actually called Karen, and I find it unfathomable that the use of a woman's name as a misogynistic sexist put-down insult is so easily used and perpetuated on a forum largely used by women.
Agree, and is there a male equivalent? No. And have I heard many men call women “a Karen” - no, it’s usually woman using it which is kind of disappointing. It’s been shorthand for someone who goes hand on hips and says “I want to speak to the manager” and “knows her rights” etc etc. It is unbecoming of us ladies to be in anyway assertive it seems. I’m the Karen generation (born in the mid-late 1960s) so I know quite a few Karens, Julies, Traceys and Sharons who all fail to live up to any of the stereotypes!

@Toastedcheese you’ve probably had your hair done now but I hope you got exactly what YOU wanted!

TableFlowerss · 17/07/2021 13:44

I do think short hair is perceived as ageing as most young women don’t have short hair. Coupled with the fact most older women have shirt hair, it stands give reason short hair isn’t attributed to youthfulness.

It’s irrelevant though, if you like it go for it.

Teaandjam · 17/07/2021 13:44

Agree, and is there a male equivalent? No.

Yes there is. You’ve clearly never heard of a Chad. GrinGrinGrin

Metabigot · 17/07/2021 13:44

It's dated rather than ageing
Only you can decide whether that matters

FreeBritnee · 17/07/2021 13:45

It’s definitely a Karen hairstyle on someone in their 50s.

FizziWater · 17/07/2021 13:50

I think your hair is lovely now. It has a wave which you could make use of. The Sharon Stone picture someone posted is fabulous.
If unsure you could just start with some layers and a trim.

Sorry but I dislike the style you were suggesting, I don't think it flatters anyone and it looks very high maintenance.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 17/07/2021 13:52

What's wrong with 'wanting to speak to the manager'? Confused

Is sticking up for themselves another thing that women are judged for now?

Hate the fucking Karen thing, why are some women so willing to shit on other women?

Sorry OP no advice, my hair is so long due to lockdowns that it's lovely just being able to tie it up and forget about it!

warmandtoasty2day · 17/07/2021 13:53

some of the pp on here should jog on with their bitchy comments re, aging and dated karens etc. so pathetic. it's yourhair wear it how you want, it doesn't matter what randoms think.
Mine's bright pink but i'm old enough not to give a damn anyway Smile

Peachee · 17/07/2021 13:55

It would be nice for you to go a lighter creamier blonde all over with a straight blow dry using rollers to give you height and lift. I think it will be nice and fresh.. I’m not keen on the Karen cut unless you are prepared to style every day it could look a bit flat and stuck down. I’ll see if I can find some more pics x

elizabethdraper · 17/07/2021 14:01

@Bagelsandbrie

Well a short shaggy mullet is what’s “in” in terms of short hair.. like this….

But at the end of the day you need to do what feels comfortable for you! I don’t like the whole mullet thing personally.

The other big thing is shaggy layered long hair. Like a grown out mullet.

Omg they are horrificShock
AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/07/2021 14:02

how on earth is this a karen?

elizabethdraper · 17/07/2021 14:02

But my name is Karen....

MawnyStannit · 17/07/2021 14:02

The problem with that cut, imo, is the volume at the back, that’s what really dates it. A short choppy Bob, though, is pretty timeless. Sharon Stone knows where it’s at, just take a few pics of her and you’ll look and feel fab I reckon. And a pretty light blonde, babylights or balayage maybe, would lift your style and look lovely.

Cocolove29 · 17/07/2021 14:06

Honestly who gives a 🤬. If you like that hair style go for it. All that Karen nonsense is just ridiculous. Don’t be put off if that’s what you want.👊🏻.

OP wouldn't have posted if she didn't care what randoms think. That's why she posted, to get opinions.
warmandtoasty2day · 17/07/2021 14:16

That's very true joris but some randoms on here are bitchy and sneering for no good reason, it's like they never left the playground, were they the clique girls or the bullies?
If op likes a particular style she should go for it.

What a deeply unpleasant and judgmental person you must be, to be so rude about an older woman in her seventies.

Your acquaintance on the other hand, sounds fab. Wink

FunnyWonder · 17/07/2021 14:19

The hairstyle pictured in SwedishEdith's post is absolutely beautiful. It's a long time since I saw a hairstyle that made me think 'wow'.
