Where in West Yorkshire is posh?

Moving to this area but have a fairly wide area to choose from. We need to have a clear run in the mornings to Sheffield for work so want to avoid the A1 (which is why North Yorkshire is out) so it looks like the M1 South and possibly the M62 is best. Work journey is currently 45 minutes and I don't want it longer. South yorks is out too because we have family in Wakefield.

Want a nice smallish village with lots of countryside, but not too far out in the sticks. Good senior school and nice standard of living. Leeds is too big and road networks too busy in the mornings.

We have £800K + available for the house. Thanks x

I though Badlow went to Hope Valley College? Not Lady Manners.

Beamur · 19/06/2021 17:47

I asked my DH as he's good at locations! He suggested the villages near to the Sculpture Park might be worth a look..or the magnesium limestone villages.
He said if he was working in Sheffield he'd look west of Sheffield, but that's no good for getting to Leeds.

worktrip · 19/06/2021 17:55

@cathyandclare

Golden triangle around Wetherby and Boston Spa are lovely and very near the A1 so easy to get to Wakefield and Sheffield, much easier than Ilkley.

Is he in central Sheffield or the outskirts?

Chapeltown way and I am in Wakefield for work.

Lady Manners definitely takes Baslow children. There’s a school bus. Fantastic school.

This is close to penistone and very close to an outstanding primary school. Only 15 miles north of Sheffield.

Just the lounge for :-

I don't see anything wrong with wanting to live in an affluent area if we can afford it and aspiring to good schools Nothing wrong with that, we did the same, but I don’t kid myself I don’t live in a homogenous white middle class community. The trophy wives reign at the school gate, and believe me caring is very far down their agenda except when it comes to interior design. The vicious ignorant rubbish that went around in Chinese whispers when my DC got into a very selective school in spite of being dyslexic, and their DCs did not, in spite of tutoring that verged on abuse (or maybe because of) came as no surprise. Sadly affluence, wherever it is, is almost always in inverse proportion to caring….. You are more likely to find competition.

@Happyhippy99

Go south of Sheffield into the Peak District & live in Baslow. Easy commute into Sheffield. Fabulous quiet and classy village with lovely pubs, restaurants & rural walks etc. Great community vibe. Good secondary school, Lady Manners.
It's a pain in the winter, though. Snow and ice make those roads impassible.
midsomermurderess · 19/06/2021 18:22

So much chippiness here and the usual, puffed-up, ooh so offended posters. Tiresomeness as only Mumsnet can do.

Hen2018 · 19/06/2021 18:26

Posh until the OP gets there! What an almighty snob.

hellohellosailor · 19/06/2021 18:27

@Viggohytten
Great just what I was aiming for! The OP said 'posh' which seems to suggest that she thinks she is better than those who don't live in a posh area. Heaven forbid that she live cheek and jowl with the Hoi polloi Smile

800k doesn't really go far in the "naice" villages between Huddersfield and Sheffield. Also there is nothing for sale at the moment, the market is crazy. Decent homes are selling way beyond asking price before they've even hit rightmove! Shock

Tyredofallthis1 · 19/06/2021 18:52

You could try up by Hebden Bridge for the hairy legged lesbians (or whatever the slurs were written on that book exchange)

Phoebesgift · 19/06/2021 19:26

So just be honest OP. You want to live in an affluent area. That has nothing to do with your disabled daughter.

santabetterwashhishands · 19/06/2021 19:39

Get thee sen to Dewsbury ya won't be disappointed 🤪

Maireas · 19/06/2021 20:00

Some of these houses! Grin I don't believe I've ever seen a four poster bath before.....

Emilyontmoor · 19/06/2021 20:35

FFS this is the second most expensive house in reach of Dewsbury and well within OPs price range. 😮www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/96513422#/

Admittedly no evidence of successful deer hunting or baronial interior design……

midsommer From your user name I am guessing irony and the Yorkshire sport of taking the piss are strange to you…

IntoAir · 19/06/2021 21:08

I used the word posh as shorthand for pleasant, friendly, welcoming, inclusive, non judgemental, educated, diverse and relaxed.

So poor people, and these who live in towns and cities do not have these qualities?

OP sorry, but if you're not actually "posh" then nowhere you live will be posh. OTOH, if you're actually "posh" you can live anywhere and find good people.

Frazzle76 · 19/06/2021 21:18

Have you actually had a look at the prices around there lately?
You'll not be getting anything in South West Sheffield or the peak district for that - you need 200k more for a posh house. Average 1950s detached 4 bed is 700 - 795. You want to stay West of the M1. Tbh you'd be much better looking at Penistone and Holmfirth- not much on atm though. Or if you want more bang for your buck and are less bothered about poshness try Bawtry/ retford.

This one's been on for ages cos there's never a time you can view it - also on/off which is a bit suspicious!!
IntoAir · 19/06/2021 21:39

Good Lord! Some of the furniture & "decor" in these houses is appalling. You really have to look past the cheap-looking (but I assume expensive) furniture, and the fake suit of armour, and use imagination to see what these houses would like without the bad-taste explosion.

TomorrowsPrincess · 19/06/2021 21:49

@worktrip
You think people who live in affluent and posh areas are less judgemental?
Oh dear Jesus!
I'm a Bradford lass..... living elsewhere now, but let me tell you...... being posh, living in a posh area..... doesn't make you anything other than a little more rich in the pocket.
I've lived on council estates and private estates..... let me tell you, the kids on the council estates were much nicer to my children than the nasty little entitled shits that live in what they think is a 'nice area'

On another note, look at Baildon. It's in Shipley/Bradford outskirts, West Yorkshire. Backs on to the moors in some places and has a lovely little village.

Tempusfudgeit · 19/06/2021 21:57

Here you go, OP. This is fairly posh. If you can get someone to chip in the remaining £7.2m ...
