Where in West Yorkshire is posh?

Moving to this area but have a fairly wide area to choose from. We need to have a clear run in the mornings to Sheffield for work so want to avoid the A1 (which is why North Yorkshire is out) so it looks like the M1 South and possibly the M62 is best. Work journey is currently 45 minutes and I don't want it longer. South yorks is out too because we have family in Wakefield.

Want a nice smallish village with lots of countryside, but not too far out in the sticks. Good senior school and nice standard of living. Leeds is too big and road networks too busy in the mornings.

We have £800K + available for the house. Thanks x

Op, you have coped very well with this thread. If it helps I know exactly what you mean by posh. When I buy something from John Lewis I tell the kids this is 'posh John Lewis' stuff and we all enjoy it more!

I was born in Yorkshire and am bringing up my family in a pretty rough area in the SE because socio-economics demand I do that.

If I had 800k to spend on a home I'd be wanting a bit of fucking posh too. Also, my sister lives in a posh area and her kids don't have to be as street smart as mine do, so op is just trying to live in the best place for her children, which any of us would do.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 19/06/2021 16:25

No wonder house prices are rising beyond what people who work here can afford
Try Keighley op. Its gorgeous

Southlandssue · 19/06/2021 16:29

@SunshineSum

Dewsbury.
🤣
Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/06/2021 16:35

Right let's get this straight
So"posh"people are never
Disablist
Bullying
Drugtakers
And they are welcoming, diverse and accepting of difference
PMSL
Our local naice school has the worst drug problem locally and I've lost count of the number of kids who've had to leave due to bullying
I grew up in a nice village
Diverse and welcoming were never words I'd have used
Give over OP nice try

My DD also has a disability. She has found kindness and acceptance in a secondary school in a poor socio-economic part of SE London.

Even in common, uneducated people can be nice to disabled children.
OP you're the worst sort of snob. Just own it FFS.

Hoppinggreen · 19/06/2021 16:48

So common people are not accepting of people’s disabilities?

Namechangetimeagain · 19/06/2021 16:49

If you want a straight run of less than 45 mins travel into Sheffield, op, I would start there. I'm 18 miles away with motorway links and a rail service and it takes me longer than 45 mins.

Travelling into Sheffield (and out of Sheffield) is a nightmare, and public transport (the Northern Line!) is notorious.

Good luck.

SecondClassmyass · 19/06/2021 16:52

Anything remotely ‘posh’ in Yorkshire is also very pretentious. Sorry

This is close to penistone and very close to an outstanding primary school. Only 15 miles north of Sheffield.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/06/2021 17:03

Now that's amazing and deserves a thread of it's own. I wonder if they're planning to take the suit of armour and the lion.

worktrip · 19/06/2021 17:04

@MrsBobDylan Thank you. I've been on MN long enough not to rise to the goading!

I don't see anything wrong with wanting to live in an affluent area if we can afford it and aspiring to good schools with an inclusive caring atmosphere, or with low crime and clean air. DH and I have both worked hard and have the luxury of choosing somewhere with good community values. We are neither of us 'posh', just extremely lucky and grateful for what we do have.

Yes travelling into Sheffield is horrible as it has no proper ring road.

worktrip · 19/06/2021 17:05

@vickibee That house is bonkers

How about Bretton or Emley, closer to Wakefield, but close to the M1 for a quick whizz down to Sheffield...

crymeapuddle · 19/06/2021 17:19

I didn't just eyeroll. I laughed too. Another vote for Ilkley

Maireas · 19/06/2021 17:25

@vickibee - dear lord, please tell me no zebra died for that

Emilyontmoor · 19/06/2021 17:29

Barbara What my Dad, an old fashioned Yorkshire snob, would call Butcher’s Baronial…..

DisgruntledPelican · 19/06/2021 17:34

@VaguelyInteresting

You sound like you’d fit in well in Ilkley.

@DisgruntledPelican

Just popped back and have not seen anything to convince me otherwise Wink

Emilyontmoor · 19/06/2021 17:35

Ah! It’s a search for Schrodinger’s village, exclusive but at the same time inclusive…….

Chickychickydodah · 19/06/2021 17:36

Hathersage, Bakewell Chesterfield . Go for the dales

dogistoobigforthesofa · 19/06/2021 17:38

How about this one? Good for commuting as there's also a train station nearby: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/107228513#/

I know you've ruled out Leeds, but Alwoodley is proper 'posh' and some of it has a village feel..

cathyandclare · 19/06/2021 17:42

Golden triangle around Wetherby and Boston Spa are lovely and very near the A1 so easy to get to Wakefield and Sheffield, much easier than Ilkley.

Is he in central Sheffield or the outskirts?

Maireas · 19/06/2021 17:42

Go south of Sheffield into the Peak District & live in Baslow. Easy commute into Sheffield. Fabulous quiet and classy village with lovely pubs, restaurants & rural walks etc. Great community vibe. Good secondary school, Lady Manners.
