Where in West Yorkshire is posh?

Moving to this area but have a fairly wide area to choose from. We need to have a clear run in the mornings to Sheffield for work so want to avoid the A1 (which is why North Yorkshire is out) so it looks like the M1 South and possibly the M62 is best. Work journey is currently 45 minutes and I don't want it longer. South yorks is out too because we have family in Wakefield.

Want a nice smallish village with lots of countryside, but not too far out in the sticks. Good senior school and nice standard of living. Leeds is too big and road networks too busy in the mornings.

We have £800K + available for the house. Thanks x

I wouldn't want a commute to Wakefield or Sheffield from them. I used to commute from Pudsey to Sheffield, but the M1/M62 interchange is horrible now, and I just wouldn't consider living anywhere where I needed to use the M62 to get to work unless it was outside of rush hour.

@worktrip have you considered Wentworth? It comes under Rotherham, but it is really pretty, and quite rural. It is actually between Rotherham and Barnsley. The M1 is accessible at jct 36, and there is a very easy route to Chapeltown from the village.

Wentworth Garden Centre scones are works of art. Better than anywhere else!

kurtney · 22/06/2021 12:54

I love Wentworth but most of the houses in the picturesque village bit are rented (I think they belong to the Woodhouse estate) and they don't come up very often.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 22/06/2021 13:33

I was going to say exactly the same, and also, it’s not a great catchment area for secondary schools either.

RampantIvy · 22/06/2021 14:38

I didn't think of schools. TBH, it sounds like Penistone or the surrounding villages will fit the bill - rural/semi rural, good schools and half way between Wakefield and Sheffield.

It is such a shame because Wentworth is really beautiful. There are lots of places I could happily live in South Yorkshire if I didn’t have children. As we do have children, we’re trying very hard to get out.
Maireas · 22/06/2021 17:47

Where do you live, @AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken?

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 22/06/2021 17:50

In South Yorkshire 😊

Maireas · 22/06/2021 17:52

Ok. No good schools in the whole area?

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 22/06/2021 17:55

There are, especially in Sheffield, but the houses in their catchment areas are very expensive and out of our price range.

RampantIvy · 22/06/2021 18:16

@Maireas

Of course there are good schools in South Yorkshire. We have outstanding primary schools near us, and a couple of good secondary schools. I think that @AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken is saying that she doesn't have any near where she lives.
Maireas · 22/06/2021 18:20

@RampantIvy. I know there are good (in fact, outstanding) schools in the area. I was just curious as to why the poster needed to move out of the area to facilitate good schooling. There's the answer. Catchment area prices.

Hoppinggreen · 22/06/2021 19:29

Some DC at my kids Private school come from that side of Huddersfield, ie Meltham, Holmfirth etc.
I think there’s a school bus

MissFenella · 22/06/2021 20:23

for the type of village life you are looking for

Denby Dale
Shepley
Stocksmoor
Shelley
Fenay Bridge
Thunder Bridge all very nice

Around Holmfirth is nice but can be very hilly which may not be ideal Holmbridge is lovely

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/06/2021 21:52

Sheffield has one of the top comprehensives in the U.K. It’s A level results often outstrip the private schools.

RampantIvy · 22/06/2021 21:55

Which school is that?

Huddersfield has one of the best sixth form colleges in England.

Iamnotavicar · 22/06/2021 22:06

Holmfirth and surrounding villages are quite affluent, some even have indoor plumbing, schools are pretty good. Huddersfield is sadly a bit of a dump. But it does rain a lot in the hills,a noticeable difference between the climate in Wakefield and the Pennines, and places like Hepworth and Meltham are prone to snow in the winter so for better weather don't stray too far from the M1!

chelle862 · 22/06/2021 22:11

@chipsarnie

Keighley in general. No where I'd rather live!

Beamur · 22/06/2021 22:15

Actually Braithwaite village in Keighley is lovely. Bradford Grammar School is very good.
But the commute to Sheffield would be awful. It's bad enough getting to Bradford, let alone Leeds.

chelle862 · 22/06/2021 22:58

Still Keighley though 🙄

Beamur · 23/06/2021 07:55

True..
I don't think Keighley would suit the OP. I worked there for a few years. It's a proper northern town.

Samanabanana · 23/06/2021 10:01

Huddersfield has two of the best sixth form colleges in England to be fair!

Ohmygoshandfolly · 23/06/2021 10:23

We live in Ackworth which is alright but honestly, if you work in Sheffield it’s still a shit commute. My DH occasionally works in Sheff and it’s an hours drive during rush hour, has taken him 2.5 hours to get home in the past when there’s been a nasty crash.

Lots of lovely areas in South Yorkshire. Brodsworth, Eccleshall, Dearne Valley.

Hoppinggreen · 23/06/2021 11:44

@Samanabanana

Huddersfield has two of the best sixth form colleges in England to be fair!
And 2 Private schools
nellly · 23/06/2021 12:08

Penistone js lovely and I would say fits the bill
