Where in West Yorkshire is posh?

Moving to this area but have a fairly wide area to choose from. We need to have a clear run in the mornings to Sheffield for work so want to avoid the A1 (which is why North Yorkshire is out) so it looks like the M1 South and possibly the M62 is best. Work journey is currently 45 minutes and I don't want it longer. South yorks is out too because we have family in Wakefield.

Want a nice smallish village with lots of countryside, but not too far out in the sticks. Good senior school and nice standard of living. Leeds is too big and road networks too busy in the mornings.

We have £800K + available for the house. Thanks x

Does posh mean quiet, beautiful, not much crime, nice shops/pub/restaurants?

KeepYellowBoxClear · 19/06/2021 12:22

If you want posh and West Yorkshire, but Sheffield way, I’d look Holmfirth, Hepworth, Penistone way. You could buy Meltham for £800k.

Saying that, with your budget, you’ll probably be able to afford somewhere on top of a hill where the commoners won’t get you with their grubby accents Hmm

Emilyontmoor · 19/06/2021 12:22

Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk are at least an hour away. I regularly drive it, the A1 is a 2 lane nightmare and the M1 chokes up around Leeds too.

However much of a snob you are that would be a painful commute.

I used to envy my friend who had a lovely huge Victorian terraced house on the outskirts of Sheffield high up on a hill looking out over the whole city.

However I am guessing OP wants a nice new build on the edge of a village (that doesn’t want her there) without having to mix with anyone who isn’t naice and middle class. The village I grew up in is now just a commuter village and the diverse community I grew up in is gone. I can’t advise on Sheffield but it is bound to have the equivalent.

duvetstealer · 19/06/2021 12:22

Why west yorks? Surely if you work in Sheffield, South yorks would make much more sense.

saraclara · 19/06/2021 12:24

speechless

sashh · 19/06/2021 12:24

We don't do posh in Yorkshire.

Have a look at Kirkburton, Shelley and surrounding.

I lived in Shelley as a child but had relatives in High Burton who travelled to Sheffield and Wakefield for work.

For your money you could get 4 or 5 bedrooms.

@SunshineSum

Dewsbury.
I'm actually a bit jealous of people who live in Dewsbury. There's some beautiful architecture and period houses for sale for a fraction of the price you'd pay down south.

Oh come on. South Yorkshire? No way would OP be able to bring herself to say she lives in SOUTH Yorkshire. Grin
saraclara · 19/06/2021 12:27

South yorks is out too because we have family in Wakefield.

Oh dear. How embarrassing for you. I do hope that they're the inlaws.

Maireas · 19/06/2021 12:28

@sashh - I love that Penistone Rd house, it's got nice features and so lovely and light.
However, is that a room with a mortuary slab? Confused

TheChippendenSpook · 19/06/2021 12:30

Wakefield is in West Yorkshire.

UnChatNoir · 19/06/2021 12:30

Posh 😂😂😂

Maireas · 19/06/2021 12:39

Have you thought about Mytholmroyd? It's lovely.
Mind you, comedian Jon Richardson and his wife Lucy Beaumont live there, very successful, but not posh.

Arbadacarba · 19/06/2021 12:39

Hebden Bridge is lovely.

Hoppinggreen · 19/06/2021 12:40

Hebden Bridge floods in parts , plus that would be an awful commute to Sheffield

Riapia · 19/06/2021 12:40

To a Hull resident anywhere in west York’s is posh.😁😁😁

Look at Heath near Wakefield. Also some lovely houses around Walton, Sandal, new miller dam area.

Many are quite isolated so low risk of having commoners as neighbors but good access to the motorway if you feel the need to escape.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 19/06/2021 12:42

I live in Bradford but work in Wakefield. Come to Bradford, we're posh here Grin

chipsarnie · 19/06/2021 12:44

Bradford has some lovely villages. Holmewood or Ravenscliffe. I'd also look at Braithwaite in Keighley - especially Coronation Way.

Eeeh, hope so, poor lass, everyone knows Wakefield is a clarty oyl. They don't even nipsy there.
PatsyJStone · 19/06/2021 12:49

Pool in Wharfedale, Ilkley, Ripponden - near M62, good for Manchester as well. Do you want private schools? You are going to need to do a lot of work looking at primaries and feeders into the secondaries if you're doing the state system. Definitely don’t discount Leeds areas as the time spent in traffic locally could be the same spent travelling on mways from further afield.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/06/2021 12:50

@VaguelyInteresting

You sound like you’d fit in well in Ilkley.
Fuck off. I come from Ilkey and we dont want tits like this.
Lightningrain · 19/06/2021 12:50

I wouldn’t fancy any commute involving the M62. Absolute nightmare.

You’d be better off looking in Sheffield towards the Peak District. I wouldn’t live there if I worked anywhere else as it’s not great for motorway access but there are lots of nice houses with the countryside right on your doorstep. It’s not far to Wakefield to see family.

Oh yes Holmewood! Some kids tried to knock me off my bike there Grin Maybe they didn't appreciate my cheap 125 and wanted to help me get a posher one.
BarbaraofSeville · 19/06/2021 12:53

Ilkley is near the M62 like Luton Airport is near London.

But maybe the OP would consider the morning commute to Sheffield worth it for the privilege of living somewhere appropriately naice. It does have a Booths after all.
