Where in West Yorkshire is posh?

Moving to this area but have a fairly wide area to choose from. We need to have a clear run in the mornings to Sheffield for work so want to avoid the A1 (which is why North Yorkshire is out) so it looks like the M1 South and possibly the M62 is best. Work journey is currently 45 minutes and I don't want it longer. South yorks is out too because we have family in Wakefield.

Want a nice smallish village with lots of countryside, but not too far out in the sticks. Good senior school and nice standard of living. Leeds is too big and road networks too busy in the mornings.

We have £800K + available for the house. Thanks x

Most of the houses are lovely. We do have an additional £200K to adapt the property for wheelchair use. Not keen on suits of armour though. Will list all the areas and trek around them. We are not looking to move for a year or two so hopefully the crazy housing market will stabilise.

@Tempusfudgeit - I love that it says "detached"!
In all honestly, £8m is a bargain for Wentworth. I think it has the longest frontage in the UK. It's an amazing place.

kierenthecommunity · 20/06/2021 00:31

I know you've ruled out Leeds, but Alwoodley is proper 'posh' and some of it has a village feel

I’m in Alwoodley. Firstly, where is the village like part? 😃

And secondly, I’m feeling hard done by that I have to drive to Featherstone for a training course for a fortnight. Like fuck would I drive to Sheffield from here 😂

ilovesooty · 20/06/2021 00:37

@Emilyontmoor

Bradford has some lovely villages. Holmewood or Ravenscliffe. I'd also look at Braithwaite in Keighley - especially Coronation Way.

Mum taught in Ravenscliffe. Every night she came home with tales of the elite 😥

However if you want so posh your MP is a notorious right wing misogynist you could try Shipley 😂

And the tit lives in Cheshire anyway Grin

@FreddieDeLaHay

Waves, my grandparents lived at Scout Hill, I was born in Moorlands but we moved to Mirfield when I was a baby.

I think that's just another MN code for everyone being the right sort of sufficiently naice inclusive people with no rough uns.

Plus everyone knows everyone and their business.

Beamur · 20/06/2021 09:15

There are lots of lovely places in West Yorkshire that fit your bill. But few within 45 minutes of Sheffield. Especially at peak commuting times.
I know Bradford and Calderdale quite well, you couldn't get to Sheffield in that time. I commute between these areas and it takes me longer than that and they're adjacent.

RampantIvy · 20/06/2021 10:16

Have sent you a PM @worktrip

Sugarplumfairy65 · 20/06/2021 10:20

Any of the villages between Marsden, Holmfirth and Penistone would fit the bill. You don't need to go near a motorway to get to Sheffield easily.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 20/06/2021 10:34

Having read more of your posts, I can recommend Denby Dale, Clayton West, Cumberworth, Upper Cumberworth, Penistone, Sheply, Shelly, Birdsedge, Ingbirchworth, Hepworth,Scholes,

KeyboardWorriers · 20/06/2021 10:46

I grew up in one of the town's listed repeatedly on here (and everywhere) as "posh". I had affluent parents and a big home.
The idea that a 'posh" place will be more inclusive or diverse or will have less bullying is a nonsense.

RampantIvy · 20/06/2021 10:49

I agree. I would say that the downside of living where we do is that it isn't very culturally diverse at all.

You get bullying in all types of schools. It is how the school deals with it that is important.

dogistoobigforthesofa · 20/06/2021 10:50

I get your points about Alwoodley, but I was thinking that some of the nice leafy avenues near the golf club have a more rural, village feel.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 20/06/2021 10:51

@princesslarmadrama

As soon as I read the title I had to eye roll 🙄
Yep.
Grunt1ed · 20/06/2021 13:26

Scissett, Clayton west, skemanthorpe, penistone holmfirth, Honley. Are probably the areas you’ll want to be looking at. Not posh per say but nice areas with reasonable people.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 20/06/2021 14:03

@Samanabanana

800k doesn't really go far in the "naice" villages between Huddersfield and Sheffield. Also there is nothing for sale at the moment, the market is crazy. Decent homes are selling way beyond asking price before they've even hit rightmove! Shock
Oh give over

Dunford Road, Hade Edge, Holmfirth
www.rightmove.co.uk/property/67781199

Wilshaw Road, Meltham, Holmfirth
www.rightmove.co.uk/property/99988658

Upper Bank End Road, Holmfirth
www.rightmove.co.uk/property/100383812

Miry Lane, Netherthong, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, HD9
www.rightmove.co.uk/property/75247809

There’s tons in Holmfirth alone.

MrsJBaptiste · 20/06/2021 14:55

Notton, Woolley, Newmillerdam and Sandal (at a push) are all near Wakefield but not too far from the M1 to get to Sheffield. If you get on at junction 38 or 39 then you miss the M1/M62 section which is always slow in rush hour.

I'd move back to that area of Wakefield in a heartbeat but sadly don't have the funds to do that!

worktrip · 20/06/2021 17:12

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken @RampantIvy
Those houses are gorgeous. We want semi rural with good connections. Holmfirth and the surrounding areas look ideal

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 20/06/2021 17:16

Holmfirth doesn't have a railway station. Brockholes and Huddersfield are the nearest stations to Holmfirth.

We are semi rural. Outside of rush hour I can be in Leeds or Sheffield in half an hour, and in Wakefield in about 20 minutes.

notapizzaeater · 20/06/2021 21:32

If you want a train station then Shepley has one, It's walkable from Shelley or Denby Dale has one.

Samanabanana · 21/06/2021 15:13

Those are a handful of examples, none near a train station and driving to Sheffield every day is a nightmare (not that the train is much better!). We've been looking for ages and I've not seen anything that I would move to for under 800k, including the ones you've linked to Grin

That’s a shame. The OP liked them and didn’t stipulate needing to be near a train station. I hope you find something to your standards soon 😊
