Where in West Yorkshire is posh?

Moving to this area but have a fairly wide area to choose from. We need to have a clear run in the mornings to Sheffield for work so want to avoid the A1 (which is why North Yorkshire is out) so it looks like the M1 South and possibly the M62 is best. Work journey is currently 45 minutes and I don't want it longer. South yorks is out too because we have family in Wakefield.

Want a nice smallish village with lots of countryside, but not too far out in the sticks. Good senior school and nice standard of living. Leeds is too big and road networks too busy in the mornings.

We have £800K + available for the house. Thanks x

There’s some nice areas if you drive to sheffield through upper Denby towards Pennistone and Sheffield. You could go the Clayton West way towards upper Denby, or go via Holmfirth to Sheffield. Have a drive round and get a feel for the area.

Ilkley, Otley and wharfedale are lovely places to live but it's 30 mins to the M1 without traffic. Add an hour on for traffic.

Wetherby, Harrogate or Knaresborough would be ok as the A1M is close by and not too congested.

@chipsarnie

Bradford has some lovely villages. Holmewood or Ravenscliffe. I'd also look at Braithwaite in Keighley - especially Coronation Way.
Meanie!

Mum taught in Ravenscliffe. Every night she came home with tales of the elite 😥

However if you want so posh your MP is a notorious right wing misogynist you could try Shipley 😂

😂😂😂😂

I should have RTFT before commenting 🤦‍♀️

Maireas · 19/06/2021 14:05

Holmfirth, that's a nice place.
Didn't the owner struggle to sell Nora Batty's house, though?

Probably because people don’t want tourists standing on the steps. Holmfirth does have tourists visit still.

Ilkley and Addingham. Ilkley would 100% fit your criteria but it isn't really a village. Addingham is 5 minutes drive out of ilkley and is definitely a proper village with lots of easily accessible walks. Harrogate is also posh but isn't West Yorkshire.

Maireas · 19/06/2021 14:10

I know, I've been! My mum loved the show and we went to Nora Batty's house! We also went to the café!

Viggohytten · 19/06/2021 14:10

@Emilyontmoor

Viggo I don’t think you are getting the point that being down to earth is actually an important part of the Yorkshire identity, it’s a norm. I could I suppose claim to be posh, certainly friends at school teased me about it and called our road in the village “millionaires’s row” but would I want to? Definitely not.
I’ve lived and worked in Yorkshire (North, West and East Riding) for well over half my life.

I still think some of the responses are sneery and nasty. They are doing well to give a bad impression to those who don’t know the area.

worktrip · 19/06/2021 14:11

@Maireas

Is there any reason you don't want to live in Sheffield, as pp have asked?
I work in Wakefield and dh works in Sheffield, so we want somewhere in between if possible. Currently live in one of the 'posh' villages mentioned lol! I'm leaning towards Penistone way. Don't want to live in Sheffield as it's too big city like. DD, who is disabled, needs regular access to hospital in Leeds.

We want 'posh' because we feel, rightly or wrongly, that DD will be more accepted into the community, as she is at the moment.

Right. I thought you worked in Sheffield, not Wakefield. I thought your family was there. Ok, no areas in Sheffield or surrounding areas then.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/06/2021 14:13

Oooooh this thread has made me want to go home ☹

Maireas · 19/06/2021 14:16

I think, in all honesty, it's difficult to tell how "accepting" people will be until you live there. Generally, though, big cities, particularly with universities are very diverse.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 19/06/2021 14:16

The places I mentioned are easy reach of both wakey and sheffield. There’s flockton and Emley too.

Where is home?
Trevsadick · 19/06/2021 14:20

I lived in Flockton.

Nice village, rubbish to commute to wakefield and Leeds. Would imagine not great for Sheffield either.

What Chevet lane near sandal. Posh road, the houses are all quite pally. Not a village as such.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/06/2021 14:20

Ilkley, but I moved to Bournemouth just before christmas

worktrip · 19/06/2021 14:21

@Viggohytten We've lived here for quite some time and understand where some of the sneery comments come from, but Yorkshire people really needn't let themselves down like this. The people I have encountered have been almost universally lovely and we love living here and just want to give our kids the kindest environment possible. We don't, for instance, want DDs brother to be teased and bullied because of his sis. Of course this can happen in any environment but in my experience it's less likely to happen in well off areas.

Thanks everyone. I am making a long list and will look at all the areas mentioned. Great ideas and thoughts on local travel 😙

Did you not use the back roads? It’s not very far at all to Wakefield, and you can go the back road way to Sheffield.
Trevsadick · 19/06/2021 14:39

Yes we did, but usually got stuck behind slow drivers, large vehicles driving slowly etc.

The entire reason we left was the back roads. Its doable, but if a good commute is on a list if important things, it's not where I would live.
