Where in West Yorkshire is posh?

Moving to this area but have a fairly wide area to choose from. We need to have a clear run in the mornings to Sheffield for work so want to avoid the A1 (which is why North Yorkshire is out) so it looks like the M1 South and possibly the M62 is best. Work journey is currently 45 minutes and I don't want it longer. South yorks is out too because we have family in Wakefield.

Want a nice smallish village with lots of countryside, but not too far out in the sticks. Good senior school and nice standard of living. Leeds is too big and road networks too busy in the mornings.

We have £800K + available for the house. Thanks x

Yes please do go to Ilkley. I live in West Yorkshire quite a way from Ilkley and I wouldn't want you living close to me but thenIm an inverse snob

newnortherner111 · 19/06/2021 13:39

One should consider if one is moving to that part of God's Own Country if one can travel to Sheffield by train from where one chooses to live.

Viggohytten · 19/06/2021 13:40

@Emilyontmoor

Clear enough meaning Yes it is very clear to most of us that OP is a snob…..
I think many of the posters on here need to take a look in the mirror.

The OP used a clear phrase (you don’t have to like it, but she was not nasty in any way). So many other posters have been downright nasty, sneery and every bit as bad as they are claiming the OP to be.

Sillyotter · 19/06/2021 13:41

Hooton Pagnell is very posh but the surrounding areas aren’t.

Ackworth and the immediate area is also posh (there’s a private school) but again surrounding areas are very different which is probably going to be the situation with most of West Yorkshire unless you head towards the peaks.

Penistone and the surrounding villages are quite posh and on the edge of the peaks but still close to m1

See. Sneery and nasty.

And proving the point as to why the OP might want to think carefully about where they live 🤷‍♀️

Parts of Sheffield are well posh.

Wealthiest areas outside London with highest number of graduates/ professionals.

Whirlow, Dore and Fulwood are super posh. Massive fuck off houses well over a million.
Bents Green, Lodge Moor, Crosspool, Sandygaye, Ringinglow all posh.

This do you? Only 2 million

Greetings from Dewsbury 😂

There is a posh part of Dewsbury - Whitley/Briestfield which are small villages.

At least, the people who live there think they're posh!

  • I am in neither
Emilyontmoor · 19/06/2021 13:44

somethingvague “she’s the sort of person who says toilet” From my husband to be’s best friend…. In London obviously

And also on meeting my absolutely lovely Irish grandmother at DCs christening “Bog Irish, how wonderful”

I actually remember the girls who joined our school from the south had an aura of sophistication, and a free pass to the cool crowd…..

worktrip · 19/06/2021 13:45

@Taoneusa

Does posh mean quiet, beautiful, not much crime, nice shops/pub/restaurants?
Absolutely. It's just shorthand for a naice area. I used to live in Surrey and in Hampshire and want something similar. Ilkley looks lovely but it's just too far to commute. I am looking at a quiet village feel, with a good community. I think we are going to have to up our budget which is a bit scary.

Saying that, with your budget, you’ll probably be able to afford somewhere on top of a hill where the commoners won’t get you with their grubby accents

Haha...DH has one of those and he's as sexy as hell!

I am so confused about why having family in Wakefield, means South Yorkshire is out?

Op have a look at Methley it's good for motorway access. But when house do go up for sale, they go quickly.

And of course all the people who have been in Methley 30 plus years love to talk about how it's gone down hill. And a bit Nimby .

Having Castleford nearby keeps its down to earth Wink

Most beautiful road in Sheffield. Amazing country views. Amazing schools. Village feel.

Houses always go on below the asking price. That will probably go for about 75k more at least.

Maireas · 19/06/2021 13:48

Is there any reason you don't want to live in Sheffield, as pp have asked?

legoagogogo · 19/06/2021 13:49

@SunshineSum

Dewsbury.
😂😂😂
worktrip · 19/06/2021 13:49

Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk are at least an hour away. I regularly drive it, the A1 is a 2 lane nightmare and the M1 chokes up around Leeds too.

Sadly this is why we don't want that area, but otherwise it would have been ideal. Constantly hearing about the A1 traffic alerts and how awful the M1 is around Leeds. We travel south to Sheffield at the moment and the traffic our way is nice and manageable.

Just to add, Methley also has a great community, if you choose to get involved and your budget will go far there.

missw1987 · 19/06/2021 13:51

Castleford. Batley.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 19/06/2021 13:51

@Maireas

Have you thought about Mytholmroyd? It's lovely. Mind you, comedian Jon Richardson and his wife Lucy Beaumont live there, very successful, but not posh.
It would be a nightmare to get to Sheffield from there.
Sillyotter · 19/06/2021 13:51

Forgot to add you could also look at Derbyshire if you’re willing to consider other areas there’s some nice villages like Elmton

TheDevils · 19/06/2021 13:52

Saddleworth then.... there are a number of villages to choose from and I think you'd get something decent with that budget. I used to drive to Sheffield regularly from Saddleworth and it was a lovely drive.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 19/06/2021 13:53

Pennistone, cawthorne, denby dale, holmfirth, upper denby, west bretton are all nice areas but wouldn’t say they’re posh.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 19/06/2021 13:54

Dewsbury is a shit hole. Avoid at all costs.

Maireas · 19/06/2021 13:55

I suppose it's your definition of "posh"?
Do you want somewhere with a Conservative MP, or does that not matter?

Emilyontmoor · 19/06/2021 13:55

Viggo I don’t think you are getting the point that being down to earth is actually an important part of the Yorkshire identity, it’s a norm. I could I suppose claim to be posh, certainly friends at school teased me about it and called our road in the village “millionaires’s row” but would I want to? Definitely not.

Veronika13 · 19/06/2021 13:56

Holmfirth
