Egg and Chips

Our American friend won't believe egg and chips is a meal (egg, chips and beans, to be precise).

It got me wondering, is this a meal specific to my location (the north west of England), or is it enjoyed all over the U.K.?

I'm North West too and egg and chips is a totally underrated meal! Especially with some bread and butter!

CMOTDibbler · 24/05/2021 19:52

A really good ham, egg, and chips is one of my favourite meals in the world. Naice ham, runny eggs without gloopy white, ideally a crispy edge, and chips which are perfectly fried not too thick or thin. Loads of vinegar

PlumKetchup · 24/05/2021 19:52

Of course it's a meal! When I worked in an office, my friend and I would celebrate Friday each week with egg and chips for lunch in a nearby cafe. Also had a plate of bread & butter and a pot of tea. Food of the Gods.

LondonJax · 24/05/2021 19:53

Egg and chips was a staple in my house when I was little and I love it now - originally from London, now living further South.

And most greasy spoons would do egg and chips (with or without beans) in both areas. Ham was considered a bit posh!

@BadgerHair

I'm wondering if it's because we were discussing evening meals, rather than breakfast though.

I will point out the egg / potato combo available breakfast options available in the USA and here.

This kind of thing. Fancy fried egg and chips!

ElderMillennial · 24/05/2021 19:54

I've never had eggs, chips and beans and it doesn't seem like a meal to me but I suppose it is because sausage, chips and beans or fish, chips and beans is and not every meal has to have meat in it...

Hohofortherobbers · 24/05/2021 19:55

Egg, chips and beans is Friday night in my house in the south east

BashfulClam · 24/05/2021 19:59

Add a couple of sausages 😋 🤤

CaptainOatFlosser · 24/05/2021 20:00

Cornwall and egg and chips sometimes add veggie ham too...I love egg and chips. Gotta be an oven chip though, not a fry or a chip shop chip. Chip shop chips are for chip buttys. Mmm, chip butty...

Sixsillysausagessizzlinginapan · 24/05/2021 20:00

Swap the beans for a good quality sausage. Add brown sauce, salt and vinegar. Food of gods.

daytrogen · 24/05/2021 20:01

Egg and chips is my favourite

Violinist64 · 24/05/2021 20:02

I had egg and chips today. Delicious.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/05/2021 20:02

Great meal, beans must be in a ramekin though as I have a horror about beans touching egg.
I think Americans don't really do jacket potatoes as a meal either.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/05/2021 20:03

We have it for all of breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I sometimes have a lazy version of potato waffles done in the toaster, with beans and a plain omelette because I don't really like fried eggs.

Wanttocryatthecost · 24/05/2021 20:03

Egg, chips & peas for me. Even better, eggs, mash & peas. I’ve converted many a non Brit friend in the past with these.

My favourite was when an American friend thought she’d make me a Shepard’s pie, she apparently knew exactly what she was doing and refused to take any advice from me. It wasn’t quite Rachel from friends but it was layered bottom up, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, mince then mushrooms and then gravy poured on top. It was only when eating it looking at my smirk she admitted it wasn’t quite like how her exDH made it 😆

HemanOrSheRa · 24/05/2021 20:03

@MrsJackRackham

Lol *@DotCottonsFagButt* I saw that too. I'm Scottish OP and it's a quick, easy pleaser dinner in this house. DP's mum used to spin it as a Thursday night treat when money was tight before payday on a Friday. So he still sees it as something special Grin
Ha! I think my mum did the same! We have 'egg and chip' week in the run up to pay day. So egg and chips, jacket potato with beans, odd freezer combinations etc. Cheaper meals over the last few days of the month.

Perfection.

irregularegular · 24/05/2021 20:09

When I was a child that was my absolute favourite meal! And I've got the evidence in my school "all about me" book. Not had it for years, but that's partly because I don't make chips at home.

I do love poached egg and beans on toast for lunch though.

irregularegular · 24/05/2021 20:10

From the NW originally btw

skodadoda · 24/05/2021 20:11

@Aprilwasverywet

The chips have to be home made imo..
I loved egg and chips, home made by my late Mum. I was brought up in Birmingham.
Blueeyedgirl21 · 24/05/2021 20:11

Tell her there’s even a song about it it’s real

GuyFawkesDay · 24/05/2021 20:11

The Lancashire Hotpots do a song called eggs sausage chips and beans (To the heads shoulder knees and toes tune)

SquashMinusIsShit · 24/05/2021 20:12

Favourite here in Nottingham! My mum has egg, chips & tinned tomatoes for a change sometimes Grin

Rockbird · 24/05/2021 20:12

Was also going to ask if you were friends with YorkshirePeach Grin

Laska2Meryls · 24/05/2021 20:12

Yum.. yum , yum yom.. Food of the Gods.....
(Deep South (UK) Here.) .

I do think for utter perfection though it needs a fried tomato with it for utter lusciousness..but I certainly wouldn't turn it down without.. (and I may be being a bit 'Posh@saying this ..., but if it was available i would also go for some chilli sauce on the side. )
