Egg and Chips

Our American friend won't believe egg and chips is a meal (egg, chips and beans, to be precise).

It got me wondering, is this a meal specific to my location (the north west of England), or is it enjoyed all over the U.K.?

I spent my youth working part time in a restaurant (1980s). Double egg and chips was one of our most popular meals from the grill menu.

DS2 eats it after rugby training most weeks.

Oh I’m now having egg n chips tomorrow with soft bloomer bread, lurpak, ketchup and a cup of tea. Salt and vinegar, no beans.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 24/05/2021 21:00

Chips & egg was my favourite meal growing up. I loved dipping the salty chips into the runny yolk. I had peas rather than beans though!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 24/05/2021 21:01

I'm in Yorkshire btw

seriousandloyal · 24/05/2021 21:02

My favourite!

This sounds like food heaven!!!!

I'm having that tomorrow too!

DuckWithOneWing · 24/05/2021 21:02

Egg, sausage, chips and beans

Minstermouse · 24/05/2021 21:03

It might be my hanging meal. Not if the eggs were snotty, though.

NoProblem123 · 24/05/2021 21:03

I’m definitely having this tomorrow now !

Beecham · 24/05/2021 21:05

Of course it's a meal! Shirley Valentine made it nationally famous!

Is your American friend now living in the UK and posts a lot on Tiktok by any chance? Probably a coincidence but I saw a video last night of an American lady who I watch on there sometimes asking this exact question as she couldn't believe it was a meal.

Personally it isn't something I eat a lot as it doesn't feel like a full meal to me - not sure why!

Faevern · 24/05/2021 21:07

@Minstermouse
Oh no not snotty eggs. As an aside I used to work with a woman whose job included sitting with the condemned the night before they were hanged.

Ilovesandwiches · 24/05/2021 21:10

I live on the south coast and this isn’t a meal I’d choose personally.. but I also do think it’s normal and have definitely heard of it
(However although I say I wouldn’t choose it if someone served it to me I’d definitely enjoy it!)

bumblebee1980a · 24/05/2021 21:10

Personally I've never had egg and chips. I was visiting the in-laws last week and they mentioned they were having "chips and egg" reminded me of Shirley Valentine.

Cupcakey · 24/05/2021 21:11

My favourite 😆

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 24/05/2021 21:12

Love egg and chips...dh just wouldn’t recognise it as a meal. Ham egg and chips is great Boxing Day meal. And a great cafe meal if you can be sure it’s proper ham.

2bazookas · 24/05/2021 21:17

No need for beans; just egg and chips will do for me. Don't forget the brown sauce.

There is only one even better meal and that is a fried egg butty and a chip butty. Each butty on a soft white buttered bap.

HazeyJaneII · 24/05/2021 21:18

It was my mum's favourite meal, egg and chips, a slice of white bread and butter and a big mug of tea.

Irishterrier · 24/05/2021 21:21

Egg chips and beans is perfection. I'm from Bristol and it's popular there.

Bordois · 24/05/2021 21:24

Chips have to be crinkle cut 👍

CirqueDeMorgue · 24/05/2021 21:27

It's my go-to when I eat out Blush

Muddydoor · 24/05/2021 21:30

Why spoil it with ham or a sausage????

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 24/05/2021 21:38

Egg n chips, white bread and butter (for the butties), loads of salt, no vinegar. Durham via Sheffield.
Dh had a boss who had it for tea every night. Even Christmas. He did die of a massive heart attack at 56 though. So too much of a good thing.

I am hearing this in Victoria Wood's voice Grin

Ah I must tell you all about egg and chips in Tanzania.

The dish is called Chipsy (yes this is chips in Swahili) Mayai (eggs).

The chips are par boiled and cooked in oil, then added to a frying pan and 2-3 eggs cracked on top. The eggs are always large with big yolks so it has quite a yellow look.

Served with a dolliping of chilli sauce.
Oh it is amazing. It's basically a chip omelette.

This and mandazi (deep fried donuts) and paratha bread (for breakfast with peanut butter and banana) served with black tea and four sugars are the reason I put on a stone. I came back from holiday on safari (which is basically food, food, food, animals, food, food, being driven everywhere) to where I was working and was told 'Hipsy ongeza' which basically means your hips have increased in size. Smashing compliment.
