Egg and Chips

Our American friend won't believe egg and chips is a meal (egg, chips and beans, to be precise).

It got me wondering, is this a meal specific to my location (the north west of England), or is it enjoyed all over the U.K.?

Fried egg, oven baked thick cut crinkle chips, baked beans (sometimes even homemade if I’m that bothered) with salt and pepper to taste. If I’m feeling very hungry, some fish fingers thrown into the oven tray with the chips.

If I’m hit with bouts of nostalgia, I’d have potato smilies or potato waffles, either baked beans or spaghetti hoops, with one or two fried eggs.

I like frying chips, potato smilies etc, but I also like it when it’s oven baked with some spray on oil to trick myself into thinking it’s healthy. Also, it’s still light crunchy.

Love egg and chips....or chips and egg as Shirley Valentine called it. Smile

sueelleker · 26/05/2021 07:53

I always think of Shirley Valentine when I see chips and egg as she's the only person I know who says it that way rather than egg and chips.
Glad I'm not the only one-I thought perhaps it was a local thing.

This was Saturday evening tea for me as a kid (South East). Home made chips and a pile of bread and butter on the side to make butties.

FuckingFabulous · 26/05/2021 08:00

Yep, we eat this. Double egg and chips

longwayoff · 26/05/2021 08:02

Wouldn't eat it now, too old, but yum. Raised in London on egg and chips, cheap and cheerful.

ChewtonRoad · 26/05/2021 08:40

Scrambled egg, fat chips (no others shall I have), two large cups of tea. Absolute bliss when eaten in a proper caff.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 26/05/2021 08:44

It doesn't seem like a proper main meal to me. I'd have ham, egg and chips, or bacon, egg, chips, beans, mushrooms etc or cheese, mushroom and onion omelette with chips. Egg, chips and beans feels like it misses something and is a bit light.

sashh · 26/05/2021 08:49

It's a meal, sometimes with boiled ham or gammon.

I'm in the midlands via, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Oxford, London and Leicester. A meal in all those places.

I've grown up and lived many years in three of these places and don't see it as a proper meal.

EversoDelighted · 26/05/2021 09:03

It's a meal to me, definitely without the beans. Just two eggs, chips, a bit of salt, pepper and ketchup.

It's because you're missing the bread and butter
TroysMammy · 26/05/2021 09:08

Sausage egg beans and chips. After being married to a fussy sod I decided any future partners must like egg and chips. If they are happy to eat that, they'll eat anything. Grin

PandemicAtTheDisco · 26/05/2021 09:13

I've had potato cakes with egg and watercress - so maybe it's the lack of the healthy side that throws me.

ExitChasedByABee · 26/05/2021 10:57

@longwayoff Blasphemy!Shock You’re never too old for egg and chips Grin

@PandemicAtTheDisco How can I forget my massive omelettes? Shock This is what I do if I am feeling less lazy. I sometimes cut sausages up and make them crispy with some generously sprayed on oil on a hot pan. Use the same pan for the mushrooms whilst the sausages are left on plate with some kitchen paper to drain. Add mushrooms to said plate once done. then either make an omelette or eggs sunny side up and chuck in the mushrooms into the eggs. Or whisk eggs separately, throw in the mushrooms and sausage bits and then cook. Beans heated on the stove with some cheese whilst chips are in the oven. Then lastly either buttery toasted crumpets or bread sliced and cut into triangles and toasted then buttered. Usually on a separate plate so people can help themselves and each person gets an omelette each. They can add salt and pepper to taste once it’s all ready to serve. We usually have condiments on the table as DP likes to add ketchup or BBQ sauce even when we have baked beans.

Might have egg and chips for lunch today

Eh?
longwayoff · 26/05/2021 14:13

O you youngsters Smile. You may outlive your ability to digest fried food. And sliced white bread. No more chip butties dipped in egg yolk for me. Sadly, cant cope with the indigestion.

lubeybooby · 26/05/2021 14:17

we love egg, chips and beans - household of 2 southerners

RubyGoat · 26/05/2021 14:27

Egg & chips, definitely. It's my favourite comfort meal when I feel crap. Sometimes I add a sliced tomato & a scoop of unpasteurised sauerkraut. Salt & pepper on the egg & tomato, salt & vinegar on the chips.

I'm so sorry for your loss 😢

I thought it was like a principle thing, Otis kids food like chicken dinosaurs and smiley faces

longwayoff · 26/05/2021 15:10

Ha Grin @SleepingStandingUp, the list is long. Chicken dinosaurs? I've missed out. Have a chip sandwich for me. White sliced, buttered, salt and pepper, sauce of choice.

I'm having that sausage omelette and crinkle cut chips tonight. I only wish I had sauerkraut to go with it too now LegoCaltrops!

Tangledtresses · 26/05/2021 15:41

Ham, egg and chips with white sliced bread (has to be fresh) and lashings of butter
Londoner here!

PandemicAtTheDisco · 26/05/2021 20:41

I'm converted. It can be a main meal.

I felt lazy and just did egg and chips instead of the omelette. It was such a quick, simple meal to prepare and clean up afterwards.

It did feel a bit lacking in nutrition so I finished off with some fruit.
