Egg and Chips

Our American friend won't believe egg and chips is a meal (egg, chips and beans, to be precise).

It got me wondering, is this a meal specific to my location (the north west of England), or is it enjoyed all over the U.K.?

@DotCottonsFagButt

Are you friends with YorkshirePeach off Tiktok? She posted a vid about this yesterday. She was convinced her British mates were winding her up about egg and chips being a thing!

I was wondering the same thing!

No, we are in the NW. our friend is a colleague and we were doing zoom drinks on Saturday, started talking about chips on the way home from the pub etc, so she brought up strange stuff we have on chips.

Love egg and chips, it's a Friday night dinner in my house and I don't live in the UK.

HalzTangz · 24/05/2021 19:39

In Midlands and enjoy the odd egg, chips and beans.

Don't Americans call Crisps chips, maybe that's why your friend doesn't think it's a meal

BadgerHair · 24/05/2021 19:40

@ComtesseDeSpair

I’ve only ever seen it on menus with ham / gammon in the SE and SW, and beans optional.

Baked eggs and potatoes with cheese was on the menu at loads of diners when I was in Arizona and fried eggs and potatoes are a common breakfast food in several southern states.

Yes - hash browns are not far off big chips.

My favourite meal well one of them love it.

MrsJackRackham · 24/05/2021 19:42

Lol @DotCottonsFagButt I saw that too.

I'm Scottish OP and it's a quick, easy pleaser dinner in this house.
DP's mum used to spin it as a Thursday night treat when money was tight before payday on a Friday. So he still sees it as something special Grin

Vodkaandballoon · 24/05/2021 19:42

Well that's decided what I'm eating when I get home. Ham egg chips & beans 😋. Chips & gravy isn't exclusive to the UK. The Canadians gave the world poutine

LifeinPieces21 · 24/05/2021 19:42

@Treezan82

Ham,egg and chips - best meal ever.
I'm going to have this tomorrow now, lovely.
Newnamefor2021 · 24/05/2021 19:42

Not had it but it's pretty common here, in Wales, does your American friend realise chips are chips are not crisps? Egg and crisps would be odd.

BadgerHair · 24/05/2021 19:43

I'm wondering if it's because we were discussing evening meals, rather than breakfast though.

I will point out the egg / potato combo available breakfast options available in the USA and here.

Egg and chips is my all time favourite dinner. DH makes it when I’m fed up, or just a bit meh. It would be my death row meal!

Megan2018 · 24/05/2021 19:44

I love egg and chips, although often it includes ham or sausage too. But just eggs is perfectly good too. Especially as we have our own hens that lay the best eggs ever.
I don’t like an insipid cheap egg.

QueenPaw · 24/05/2021 19:44

Egg and chips, preferably with beans and some buttered bread to mop up. And a brew
Yes please!

Oh, yes, have to have a mug of tea with it.

Egg and homemade chips with cheap white bread and butter

Beans are not a part of this meal

BadgerHair · 24/05/2021 19:46

Will look up Yorkshirepeach on TikTok and check she isn't our friend. I doubt it though, given we are in Cheshire.

VerbenaGirl · 24/05/2021 19:46

We eat it here (in East Anglia) as a treat when comfort food is needed. Yum!

Ted27 · 24/05/2021 19:46

I think I must have egg and chips for tea now

I saw the original Shirely Valentine stage production - she cooked the chips and egg on stage, I was sat behind the cooker, Bliss

on a related matter - whilst up a mountain in Uganda on a hiking expedition, the cook served up chips. To the horror of a very posh consultant doctor a few of us proceeded to make chip butties. He thought they were urban myths, he was even more horrified that deep fried mars bars were also not an urban myth

HeartShapedBalloon · 24/05/2021 19:46

Love egg and chips but would need sausages and beans as well to fill me up properly or I'd be starving an hour later!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/05/2021 19:48

My grandma used to make the BEST egg and chips. Perfectly fried eggs, crisp, golden triple-cooked chips, and piles of bread and butter (so you make make chip butters and dip them in your yolk).

I'd give an awful lot to have my grandma's egg and chips again.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/05/2021 19:48

Certainly ate that in South Wales.

Babygotblueyes · 24/05/2021 19:50

We used to have it in London. And I will never forget Shirley Valentine with her Chips and Egg.

pinkmagnolias · 24/05/2021 19:50

Not something I’ve ever had. A UK meal for sure!

We eat egg on toast. Still a carb so maybe the same thing.

Luckyelephant1 · 24/05/2021 19:51

Egg and chips with beans and cheese, yum.

Are you sure your American friend doesn't think you mean crisps? Because egg and potato isn't a weird combo, but just having an egg and a packet of crisps isn't a meal so maybe that's what they're thinking.
