I am bleeping fuming DIL and DS took toddler to out of hours this morning, tonsillitis, they were told to go to covid testing center like little sheep they went. Well fuckity fuck if there's a false positive track and trace will be on our backyard because we had them for a BBQ on Thursday. Told. OH any unknown numbers for the next fortnight not to answer

LivinLaVidaLoki · 05/06/2021 14:02

God its absolute fucking madness over there lately isn't it?

I'm sticking here and the good news thread from now on.

WouldBeGood · 05/06/2021 14:55

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

Haven't posted for a while but just jumping in with a random thought. For a while now we keep being told that being vaccinated doesn't necessarily stop someone spreading the virus. If the next goal is to get 12-15 year olds vaccinated then the only reason for that is to stop it spreading in schools as that age group aren't significantly affected themselves. So does that mean we will now be told it does stop the spread? And what will that mean?
Excellent point.

There’s always just “one more thing” needing do e before freedom

hazelnutcrackers · 05/06/2021 15:47

WouldBeGood Absolutely. The cognitive dissonance is strong out there. The vaccine is so great that everyone must have one, or 20, forevermore, to keep everyone safe. It's really great and it's therefore your duty to have it. It's also your duty to make sure your children have it. Even though it's only licenced for emergency use and there is no emergency under any possible meaning of that term. And even though children aren't affected by Covid in any statistically meaningful sense. This is because children could pass Covid to the already-vaccinated vulnerable, who may therefore die. Because the vaccines don't work. Except of course they do, which is why everyone must have one. Except they don't because we're still all going to DIE. Or get 'long Covid'. Which definitely exists in a totally different realm from all other post-viral issues.
Etc til the end of time.

Taswama · 05/06/2021 16:28

The only reason I can see to vaccinate children is to go on holiday to somewhere that will only let you in if vaccinated or demands a test if not. Our holidays are DIY affairs so we have booked flight + car + accommodation separately and would lose all of it if someone tested positive.

But my logical brain says surely if UK has vaccinated a critical mass of people and the country I want to visit, e.g. France, has also vaccinated a critical mass then there should be an agreement to allow travel without the need for tests as the risk of an unvaccinated Brit infecting an unvaccinated Frenchwoman is very small.

I'd also be interested in understanding more about the 'structural issues' in Bolton and Leicester that have kept their rates high despite restrictions @BogRollBOGOF if you can expand?

By structural issues I meant dense population from multi-generational living and HMOs, high risk employment (poor ventilation, working close together, insecure employment with low pay making isolation unaffordable, some employers not following regulations. Nothing unique to those areas, widespread through areas with deprivation, but it's no co-incidence that the first areas to become hotspots and be least responsive to restrictions are recurring again. The calls for keeping restrictions from certain quarters overlook the real problems that make it hard to supress the virus in more challenging living and working conditions. They're also difficult for individuals to exert much choice over.

Wasn't spread cut by something like 60%? Can't remember the exact data. It's not complete, but it is significant. And in the face of 75% of the adult population having had their first vaccine and 51% having had their second, that is much harder for spread to occur and the odds improving by the week.

I'm pretty sure it's being played down to keep people compliant, and there'll probably be a shift in narrative in the media when adults have been offered the vaccine.
If there isn't by that point, goodness knows where we'll be!

Feeling quite down about the ongoing situation, things are so abnormal still, saw a picture on Facebook of a friend at a live music event with her partner, wearing masks and miles from anyone else.

What made me feel worse was watching the Coldplay concert on Radio 1 Big Weekend, it was at Whitby Abbey and with the most amazing light show and no audience. I am onto the second round of cancellations of concerts we should have gone to last year. I am 57 this year and have health issues and feel I don’t have this time to waste not having things that make life worth living like theatre and live music. Just being alive doesn’t feel like enough 😔

BogRollBOGOF · 05/06/2021 22:22

All my desire to run has evaporated in the absence of races and parkruns.
I've done a few trail races and have no regrets, but they were very quiet and underwhelming and I CBA to sign up for more. And virtual races don't do it for me as the medal comes so long after the run.

I want the buzz of a road race and the challenge of training to run all. Too many sneaky walk breaks in trail.

Someone I know had been training for a distance walking event and the landowners have pulled permission because the area is too busy with domestic tourists and they're restricting organised event sizes Hmm

It's all for the good of our health Confused

I am with you @Evenstar. I’m 52 and DP is 60 this year,he was diagnosed with ms a couple of years ago. So far he’s fine, but the concerts and travels being pushed forward year on year is a big deal to us.

justasking111 · 05/06/2021 22:50

Our health board is advertising for volunteers to come forward to have a third jab and be studied. What's that about do you think?

Lostinacloud · 06/06/2021 12:27

I just want to get off this train now!! I don’t quite know what to do with myself anymore. I tell myself not to look at my phone but then I get concerned that if I don’t follow what’s going on then I’ll be blindly walking into whatever further dystopia is being created and run out of options to make my own choices or perhaps even try to find a corner of the world where this crazy rhetoric isn’t being followed - does such a place even exist?

The facts are so clear to see, anyone under 70 without serious other health issues has over a 99% chance of survival. For those compromised or elderly, an effective vaccine exists. Despite the continuous scare stories, still no variants exist which threaten vaccine effectiveness. So WHY is any of this still continuing? Why the massive limits on travel, all the testing, all the restrictions, threats to those who’ve chosen for their own reason not to be vaccinated? I can’t understand it. This virus seems actually so non- dangerous to the general public at large that once the vulnerable have been vaccinated, herd immunity could easily be safely achieved by letting cases run as normal winter respiratory viruses run - and that’s without taking into account the absolutely huge uptake of the vaccine in the population so far. Fine keep an eye on the most virulent strain and decide whether annual vaccines are needed along with the flu jab, but there’s just no need for any of this to carry on.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but what possible non sinister reason is there for things to be getting worse not better, for open discrimination towards people making different choices about their own health, for huge limitations on our freedoms to go out to meet friends “unmonitored by tracking” or go on holiday and attempt to just escape the past year of utter stress?

And why are huge swathes of previously understood science being ignored? Like why is long term natural immunity no longer believed to exist? Why did studies last year find that the blood samples collected from SARS (SARS-COV1) survivors recognised and successfully destroyed Covid (SARS-COV2) even though the 2 viruses are around 20% different to each other? This is a huge breakthrough because it should mean that covid mutations with only a 0.3% difference pose no problem at all. But you can’t find reference to this study, only by listening to former Nobel prize winning scientists that have now been laughed out of town and discredited by the establishment/social media/government bodies etc because they don’t tow the party line.
Ivermectin has been proven over and over again to cure or at least improve things for almost everyone, even the most sick, and yet families have to fight in court to get the treatment administered to their ill relatives? WHY?

Half of me considers just giving in so maybe I don’t feel so uncomfortable all the time and the other half (winning so far) feels so much anger towards what has been done to all of us and for what continues to be done that I just cannot concede and let them beat me.

I have this growing uneasy feeling that things aren’t adding up and i can’t escape it. Anyone else? Or alternatively, has anyone found a way to get on with their lives and ignore all of this as much as possible?

110APiccadilly · 06/06/2021 12:41

"I have this growing uneasy feeling that things aren’t adding up and i can’t escape it. Anyone else?"

I sometimes do. I'm not a natural conspiracy theorist so I keep thinking I must be over-thinking it, but I have an uneasy feeling as well. No idea what the point would be though - except that people in power always want to have more power.

GiveMeNovocain · 06/06/2021 12:41

It's been ages since I said hi from Wales. I think it's easier as we have been told no end so at least they can't take hope away but on the other hand there's no hope at all so it's really depressing

WouldBeGood · 06/06/2021 12:43

Look at all the backhanders and money made by governments and their cronies under the guise of emergency! Pandemic!

Money is the answer

LivinLaVidaLoki · 06/06/2021 13:46

Just seen loads of news headlines stating "the Delta variant is 40% more transmissible" but not until you get to the very end of the article does it state briefly "but scientists also believe that two doses of the vaccine will give you the same protection as the last variant"

Soooooooo that's a good thing right? I'm so sick to fucking death of the media doom clickbaiting now. Everything is reported as a complete fucking disaster in the headlines but then when you get to the end (which a lot appear not to) then there is a tiny bit of balance.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 06/06/2021 13:47

Also irrationally pisses me off that wanksock has said the "link between illness and hospitalisations is severed but not broken"

Am I being thick or are severed and broken essentially the same thing?

Severed is rather more definite than broken! Severed your arm - you no longer have a hand. Broken your arm - you still have a complete arm! Prick.

Just back from a trip to the pool with DS2. You have to arrive with your swimming gear on, so I had got DS to change and put his boxers in his swimming bag. I put my knickers in my bag, put my costume on and nipped to the loo before we left. Then removed my bra and pulled my costume up. Only when I got out did I realise my bra was still on the kitchen table. 😅 Luckily my top wasn't see through and I don't have enough to jiggle!

On the cycle ride home we passed a playground with a notice saying XXX city council recommends the wearing of face masks in this playground for adults and children over the age of 11! 🤬 Seriously?? It's outside in the fresh air! I'm really tempted to write and complain to my local councillor about a waste of council tax!

Evenstar · 06/06/2021 17:51

@MercyBooth that is shocking, I think after their lax border control allowed the Delta Variant in they think they should crack down on something 🙄
