Why is M&S food so bloody nice??

MozzchopsThirty · 05/05/2021 19:03

I bought a pea shoot and garlic stir fry mix!!!!!
A bloody stir fry mix, I mean how can it be better than any other stir fry?
It was amazing Smile

And their Chinese food is so much better than a takeaway

And their sweet chilli beetroot is the best

Why? Why? Why?

These are not fancy foods???? These are M&S foods
(And I can't afford to shop there)

Had a quick glimpse at the yellow label products as a crowd had formed around them only to see a teen behind filming us all on his mobile phone saying ‘look at these peasants’

You'll all have been tik tok famous by the end of the day 😆

beepbeepbonk · 06/05/2021 13:39

I miss Waitrose (I shop with Ocado) M&S is a bit 'meh

Quirrelsotherface · 06/05/2021 15:02

We had their sausage and mash ready meal this week, only bought it because it was on offer on the Ocado shop. Wow it was like a Gastro pub meal and was something like 1.80 on offer.

Went today thanks to this thread and got some lovely things, and a huge chocolate birthday cake reduced to £3 and has today's date on it so obviously it's the law it has to be eaten today 🤣 that's my excuse anyway!

andivfmakes3 · 07/05/2021 05:21

@Quirrelsotherface

I had that sausage and mash meal last week - yummy!

I popped in for milk yesterday and came home with

My free box of truffles thanks to Sparks (there goes the diet again 🤦‍♀️)

Yellow sticker lamb burgers, dry aged burgers, burgers with some kind of fancy relish - bloody hope it stops raining so we can have a BBQ!

Oh and the new Bombay potato salad pot which I can confirm goes lovely with the coronation chicken flatties) and a microwave bag of the Indian inspired grains 😋

Today being Friday it opens a whole half earlier so baby twins will be bundled up in the beast of a twin pram ready to fill up for the weekend!

midsomermurderess · 07/05/2021 05:24

But it isn't us it. Take the branding off, and I suspect you couldn't tell it from the other supermarkets.

andivfmakes3 · 07/05/2021 05:26

@midsomermurderess

you can definitely tell the difference in a lot of meals that it's marks and not say....Aldi or Lidl's

I do know that marks meals are made in the same factory as a lot of other supermarket meals just on a different day of the week but they do taste superior......(or I've bought into the hype 🤣)

midsomermurderess · 07/05/2021 05:47

They don't though, do they.mThey are indistinguishable from eg Tesco Finest etc. Cheap supermarket curries etc are horrible and watery. But the more expensive rages, they are all much of a muchness.

MozzchopsThirty · 07/05/2021 13:26

I was very disappointed with the yellow sticker selection today, not much cheaper than the original price

So I bought:
Sticky chilli chicken
Egg fried rice
6 spring rolls
2 lemon & Marscapone chessecakes

Which I plan to eat all to myself tonight as dcs are at their dads, DP is out so it's just me, lounge wear, doggo & food

There were no Thai boxes Sad
No four cheese ravioli Sad (unless it's the Parmesan ravioli)
No choux buns

I have coeliac disease and their GF bread is the best! Nothing else like it.

knittingaddict · 07/05/2021 14:06

@Shedbuilder

I can't forgive them for what they did to their vegetarian moussaka, which was brilliant: delicious layers of aubergine and potato and lentils in a special sauce, topped with béchamel. The current incarnation is just red pasta sauce with a couple of bits of aubergine and a thick layer of white blancmange-type stuff on top.

A custard choux bun might just make me feel a bit more positive, though...

Their chilled curries aren't as nice either. The Charlie Bighams ones are much nicer with large chunks of decent chicken in them.

M and S do some lovely food, but it's not all good and they have a nasty habit of discontinuing your favourites. Pizza pockets were amazing and they stopped doing the Asian rump joint. I will always bear a grudge for those crimes against food deliciousness.

coodawoodashooda · 07/05/2021 14:10

Has anyone been able to replicate their grainy salads?

DuesToTheDirt · 07/05/2021 14:27

I love the grainy salads, but never try to make them myself as they have too many faffy ingredients.

shumway · 07/05/2021 14:31

God I miss going to M&S.

thesugarbumfairy · 07/05/2021 14:32

Thai box is indeed delicious. Portions are small but its worth it for the taste. I also love the nibbly sides, like the thai fish cakes and the sweetcorn fritters.

Their white chocolate lemon tart from the bakery is divine. But they aren't doing it at the moment

Shedbuilder · 07/05/2021 14:37

When the local M&S opened here last year the best time to shop was early or late. The place was empty at those times. Went last week and there was a queue 20 minutes before it opened and we had to be counted in. Was everyone a Mumsnetter looking for yellow stickers? I was looking for a few bits for a weekend away, had no idea this was a thing.

andivfmakes3 · 07/05/2021 15:27

I had a win today and got my wagyu beef burgers on yellow sticker! And a lemon drizzle cake.......DH just raised an eyebrow on seeing it in the kitchen since I've also moaned about my post twin mum tum today 🤣

FortyFiedWine · 07/05/2021 16:00

@salemcat

I miss their baked potato & butter crisps so much, lived of those as a teenager
Yes! No one I know remembers them. Delicious.
peaceanddove · 07/05/2021 16:11

Their fruit is reliably delicious, strawberries actually taste of strawberries etc. Their dirty fries should be illegal, they're that good. Their frozen crepes are amazing, just zap them in the mircowave and sprinkle with sugar and lemon juice.

And, last but not least, their chocolate squirty cream in a can. You're welcome 😉

MumofSpud · 07/05/2021 16:24

I live v near an M&S food only shop and have it timed to a fine art when to go for a 'yellow sticker' frenzy (we call it 'whoopsie shopping').
My DH used to get embarrassed with me going (but still ate my findings) but has now embraced the fun to be had!

CurryLover55 · 07/05/2021 16:28

The prawn sandwiches went right down in quality in my opinion - are the ones discussed in this thread more expensive ones then?

ifyougetthechancedoit · 07/05/2021 16:44

Another Ocado shopper here. I also miss Waitrose! The fresh veg was miles better and I loved the cook's ingredients range. Went into Waitrose earlier and their limes are so much better than M&S or Sainsbury's.

I think M&S is great for a few choice bits. I do like M&S for dairy and they do some good ready made things for a lazy Sunday roast.

Overall I'd prefer my main shop to be from Waitrose topped up with a few bits from M&S.

The prawn sandwich is called The Best Ever or something similar. It is more expensive, but worth every penny. Haven't had one since the first lockdown and this has made me want one.

I saw the dirty fries today and they did look amazing
