Why is M&S food so bloody nice??

MozzchopsThirty · 05/05/2021 19:03

I bought a pea shoot and garlic stir fry mix!!!!!
A bloody stir fry mix, I mean how can it be better than any other stir fry?
It was amazing Smile

And their Chinese food is so much better than a takeaway

And their sweet chilli beetroot is the best

Why? Why? Why?

These are not fancy foods???? These are M&S foods
(And I can't afford to shop there)

I don’t love everything from M&S but some things are amazing. Like their fresh curries, their massive crumpets, their tapas range. And their £6 rotisserie chicken is just ace.

SunIsComing · 05/05/2021 19:12

Their best ever macaroni cheese.... drool... all butter biscuits....yum.... sultana cookies.... omg! I could go on!

andivfmakes3 · 05/05/2021 19:14

Because it's not just any pea shoot and garlic stir fry mix......

I adored M & S food until we started getting it all the time with Ocado.

Then you realise how sugar/salt laden it all is, and that it doesn't last longer than 48 hours Hmm

RainOnMe79 · 05/05/2021 19:19

I agree, but it's also very expensive to do a full shop in there. Even their alcohol tastes nicer.

andivfmakes3 · 05/05/2021 19:27

I don't find it that expensive (that's not a stealth boast by the way) - a lot of packs of meat and fish they have 3 for £10, and the family dinner meals are good value too. They do a stir fry meal for 2 for £6 and gourmet meal with pudding for 2 for £10z I do go in first thing in the morning and stock the freezer up with yellow sticker items. I got a massive bday chocolate cake today reduced from £12 to £4! I actually find I spend more at Sainsbury and come out with a lot less

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/05/2021 19:29

Salt, sugar, fat. Unfortunately because I love it.

poppycat10 · 05/05/2021 19:31

Their ready meals are really nice, although they have obviously been trying to reduce the sugar and salt because they're blander than they were. For example, their Italian collection. I think 3 ready meals for £7 is pretty affordable, especially in comparison with a weekend takeaway. But I wouldn't do a full shop there.

I had a three bean stew the other week, that was nice and I need to look for it again.

covetingthepreciousthings · 05/05/2021 19:31

I'm sure you'll get people along in a minute to tell you that they think Lidl and Aldi are nicer than M&S.. but I agree, even the pasta tastes so much nicer!

Our one extravagance in our lives is that our food shop comes from M&S Blush not sure I could go back to a normal 'supermarket' shop now.

Marmite27 · 05/05/2021 19:32

Fat, salt, sugar.

Why does it taste so nice? Sad

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 05/05/2021 19:32

Yes they excel at expensive processed food. Cannot understand why Ocado thought that was a good fit for their customer base.

BeyondMyWits · 05/05/2021 19:33

Their food is ok as a quick substitute. But we tend to use it to try something new, then find a recipe if we liked it.

Like the butter chicken, nice but too salty and not enough chicken. So found a recipe and had a go... tastes great. But we would not have had it if we hadn't tried something new to us...

But their custard filled choux buns are perfect, no point even trying to make a nicer version.

RubyFakeLips · 05/05/2021 19:34

Don’t follow them on Instagram if you don’t want to be in there all the time. Bloody love the rotisserie chicken.

Some things are more expensive but I’ve always found their fruit and veg exceptional, meat is good too although generally prefer Waitrose fish.

We have it delivered through Ocado and haven’t had an issue with the dates but disappointingly they don’t have the full range so DH took up browsing there as his lockdown hobby.

Icancelledthecheque · 05/05/2021 19:36

Just don’t get too attached, they’re absolute buggers for discontinuing the nicer products!

I'm still not over them discontinuing the giant cheesy wotsits they used to do at Xmas 😢
MsTSwift · 05/05/2021 19:44

Their Thai box takeaway is better than restaurant food. £10 for box for 2 utter bargain we pay £20 for delicious take away for 4 our weekend treat! Got us through winter lockdown anyway!

Boscoforever · 05/05/2021 19:46

They do have something called cheese tasters andivfmakes3, which look like giant cheesy Wotsits?
Personally don't eat them as don't like them, but buy them for DH.
I am in M&S every other day, "for a few bits". We know how that ends up...Grin.
I love their hazelnut cookies, and chocolate-covered shortbread biscuit things. Usually just avoid that aisle...

I love the thai box too. We have a fake away for a treat. Butter chicken is lush as well.

I think a lot of the ready meal stuff is actually good value as it tastes so nice. I can split a spaghetti carbona between two kids add some veg and have dinner on the table within 5 minutes of walking in the door. I struggle to find quick things the kids will eat so M & S is great. I do love a freezer filling yellow sticker jackpot too.

FrenchyQ · 05/05/2021 19:53

Their 50/50 bread is better than hovis and only 65p a loaf.

Obviouspretzel · 05/05/2021 19:58

I honestly find it largely mediocre. I don't understand the fuss. The fresh ingredients are super expensive but inferior to a butcher or greengrocer etc and on a par with many other supermarkets.

Processed food and ready meals etc are nice, but not warranting the price and mostly just a slight upgrade on other supermarkets. A ready meal is a ready meal tbh.

The salads and bakery are pretty good.

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 05/05/2021 19:59

I love their

gastro sausage rolls
gastro lasagne
custard choux buns
hot fudge pudding
sourdough loaf
boule de campagne
chocolate tiffin
the posh prawn sandwich
dirty fries
and they always have the most strawberryiest strawberries

andivfmakes3 · 05/05/2021 20:05

I know! I ended up with a feed 16 people chocolate cake and giant lamb kebabs from their new range 🤦‍♀️

My M&S food hall has just expanded to at least 4 times the size it was and it now has a whole wall of Percy pigs

MozzchopsThirty · 05/05/2021 20:05

@MsTSwift I will definitely give the Thai box a whirl

Oh I forgot to add the lemon & mascarpone cheesecake, I could eat both slices

I've just discovered their frozen, bake at home cookies ... sooooo good.

ALongHardWinter · 05/05/2021 20:07

I must admit that this is something that's puzzled me for years! I'm not saying that I love everything that they do food wise, but I admit that what I DO like always seems to be far better than from any other shop. I adore their best ever prawn sandwiches (bloody expensive but my once a month treat) cheese tasters (my favourite crisp type snack of all time) their butter chicken, and custard choux buns. I totally agree with I cancelledthecheque. They ARE absolute buggers for discontinuing products you love. I can think of at least 5 items they've stopped doing that I was practically addicted to!
