Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

I've never wanted to go to Brighton.
Until now.
They still have potted meat?

DumplingsAndStew · 02/05/2021 12:50

@CagneyNYPD

You will love Brighton if you are vegan. Every second person in Brighton is vegan, or so I'm led to believe.
How do you know that? Surely they didn't tell you? Shock

The Little Fish & Chip Shop in Brighton. Follow them on Instagram for info on daily specials, but always have to fish, jackfruit, and banana blossom 'fish and chips' available.

@Yorkterrier

And some gays
But surely some of them are bound to be vegan. Or at least bi-veggie.

Interrupting the quality free form association going on here to stealth boast that I had vegan fish (away with you, pedants!) and chips and onion rings from Harbour Lights in Falmouth just last night. And ate it on the beach, too Grin

BrittanyKAMA · 02/05/2021 13:11

@crackofdoom sounds great! Do you live there or were you just visiting, if you don’t mind me asking?

@DumplingsAndStew

I have my sources 👀🤫

crackofdoom · 02/05/2021 13:16

Brittany I live there Smile. We drove past several fish and chip shops without queues to go and line up in the cold outside Harbour Lights.

Oh I love Falmouth. Very jealous of that.

Sorry @BrittanyKAMA didn’t really mean to be and fwiw I like a vegan option so this thread has been v useful!

kikisparks · 02/05/2021 13:33

In Largs Gino’s fryer has vegan versions of fish, crab cakes, calamari, scampi, prawns, fish fingers, sausages, haggis, black pudding, chicken nuggets, tartar sauce, curry sauce, burgers, chips, fritters, onion rings, mushy peas and more. All stored and cooked separately. There’s also vegan ice cream at Geraldos. But it is 491 miles away from Brighton.

Gosh. 2 vegans altogether then. Deffo need a vegan chippy in that case.
OnlyInYourDreams · 02/05/2021 13:52

Odd thread.

There’s no such thing as vegan fish and chips. Doesn’t matter if you call it fish, it’s not fish it’s some kind of alternative.

I really don’t understand this need for vegans/vegetarians to refer to things which are vegetarian in animal terms. If you don’t eat fish then don’t eat fish, but don’t pretend that something else is fish because it isn’t.

By all means look for a chip shop which fries in oil rather than dripping, and then hope they do some kind of veggie/vegan option as well as the fish…

It's only an odd thread because some posters think that being a dick and derailing threads is totes hilaire.🙄

I’ve always thought this! Perfectly nice vegetarian/ vegan food named after dead animals. Why?
The thought of eating tofish (tofu fish) turns my stomach.

Bit weird! Unless I’ve missed another post by onlyinyourdreams the above is hardly a derail.

@FeatheredHope

Fried banana blossom or tofu is not “vegan fish”. Fish is not vegan. There is nothing wrong with not eating fish or enjoying an alternative fried option but I hate this BS mixed up language. But I appreciate that’s just me being an old stick in the mud.
Why do you hate this language? Veganism is a movement growing rapidly. Let people eat familiar texture / flavour and named foods for ease. It's not as though you're going to make the mistake. Soya protein cylinder is ridiculous compared to vegan sausage

I find it amazing how much it bothers people 🤣

Utterly pathetic. I have my vegan fish fingers in the oven right now.. oooo are you triggered?

I know you weren’t quoting me but what is wrong with you? People have different views! Why so nasty? Are you triggered?

No, but they have some potted vegan tofu that identifies as meat. I'm hoping it's just a phase and it'll grow out if it.
Sillyduckseverywhere · 02/05/2021 14:11

@victopai

Southend does, it has a pub directly outside the station. And I'd be shocked if Brighton didn't.
I'm really sorry, they didn't survive covid ☹

It’s an alternative designed to replicate the taste and texture (in the case of banana blossom) of fish though. Vegans generally aren’t vegan because they don’t like meat, they do but just have an ethical aversion to it. Hence trying to replicate non-vegan foods. HTH

It really is pathetic when people get irritated at ' vegan fish' 'vegan sausage' I wonder how triggered they get with hot dogs, peanut butter and pease pudding.
