Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

@BrittanyKAMA

Thanks for the suggestions! I am east coast but thought it might be a helpful thread for people across the country.
East coast of where? Across which country?
Tarzaan · 02/05/2021 12:17

There's one vegan fish and chip shop and nothing else in Brighton. Not one thing. Oh there's a beach too but it's all stones.

BrittanyKAMA · 02/05/2021 12:24

@Tarzaan are you sure about that? Someone upthread suggested it’s a major tourist destination.

Well what would they know!

Yes I'm sure. I went there once in 1989 and the vegan fish shop was shut so we had to come home when we got hungry.

(I'm not a vegan)

Yorkterrier · 02/05/2021 12:32

Tarzaan I'm sorry that happened to you Thanks

Tarzaan · 02/05/2021 12:33

@Yorkterrier thank you. It was a solemn drive home on the M25.

BrittanyKAMA · 02/05/2021 12:34

@Tarzaan I think it unlikely that there was a vegan fish & chip shop there in 1989.

Couldhavebeenme2 · 02/05/2021 12:35

@Tarzaan I'm not sure I believe what I'm seeing. Were vegans even invented in 1989? Were fish and chips invented then? Surely then everyone even in Brighton ate potted meat sandwiches and flasks of tea on trips to the coast?

DumplingsAndStew · 02/05/2021 12:36

Oh, I've just realised who you are. Did you manage to get home at last?

BrittanyKAMA · 02/05/2021 12:36

I think @Tarzaan might be a troll Confused.

Things to do in Brighton if you're a vegan would include a visit to Inifinity Foods, in the North Laine - it's been there forever and sells ethically sourced foodstuffs. The whole North Laine (as opposed to The Lanes) area is a feast of bohemian, eclectic, independent shops, restaurants, cafés and entertainment venues (well, when everything's open, that is). It's directly inland from the pier (the one that's still in one piece) and to the east of Queen's Road (which runs from the station towards the sea, turning into West St at the Clock Tower). If you walk down Trafalgar St which runs underneath the front of Brighton Station you'll find yourself in the middle of the North Laine area - keep going to the bottom, turn left and pop into The Yellow Book - a steampunk-themed bar with very woke credentials and bar staff. There may be vegan food available, and there'll defnitely be vegan beer!

What??? Brighton invented vegans.

WhySoSensitive · 02/05/2021 12:38

I heard the first vegan was grown in Brighton.

Couldhavebeenme2 · 02/05/2021 12:39

@Tarzaanbut who invented Brighton?

lulujuju · 02/05/2021 12:39

Do you really not know anything about Brighton OP? Where do you live?

Couldhavebeenme2 · 02/05/2021 12:40

@WhySoSensitive

I heard the first vegan was grown in Brighton.
What, like man-made or naturally evolved from banana flower? Wink
CupoTeap · 02/05/2021 12:40

@FeatheredHope

Fried banana blossom or tofu is not “vegan fish”. Fish is not vegan. There is nothing wrong with not eating fish or enjoying an alternative fried option but I hate this BS mixed up language. But I appreciate that’s just me being an old stick in the mud.
I agree and I know it's off topic, why do we need duck free spring rolls?? It drives me bananas
WhySoSensitive · 02/05/2021 12:41

Banana flower, so technically they’re now cannibals...

BrittanyKAMA · 02/05/2021 12:41

@Inextremis thank you for your sensible and informative reply. That is exactly what I was looking for.

Really? I never knew about the gays. Are you sure?

@Yorkterrier @Couldhavebeenme2 Sorry all, this was my fault for confusion. One of the old fisherman - Brighton’s only four residents - mentioned is gay. Livens up a Friday night. He takes 15 seconds before Friday Night Comedy starts to ask his four 80-year-old fishermen mates, “So... all still fancy the lasses?” They all say, “Oh. Aye.” And that’s it. Very old school.

There is loads to do in Brighton if you enjoy stepping over homeless teenagers overdosing on pavements, stag nights on a comedown and overpriced gelato parlours.

CagneyNYPD · 02/05/2021 12:44

You will love Brighton if you are vegan. Every second person in Brighton is vegan, or so I'm led to believe.

This thread reminds me of those Facebook comments from mums during the holidays ‘anything happening today?’ ‘What kids stuff about’ I mean, I know it’s good to ask questions but sometimes it’s like: just have a quick look yourself mate
