Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

Vegan fish? That sounds truly grim. Anything fishy tasting/smelling that isn't supposed to be is probably off.

Also, I'd wonder if the oil is being used for frying meat and fish and what type of oil it is too.

I'd bet that many restaurants don't bother cooking vegan stuff separately anyway.

@1940s

It really is pathetic when people get irritated at ' vegan fish' 'vegan sausage' I wonder how triggered they get with hot dogs, peanut butter and pease pudding.
Thank you! My point exactly. But apparently its nasty to think 🤔
PattyPan · 02/05/2021 14:17

@bunburyscucumbersandwich they usually use seaweed rather than mould for the flavouring Hmm

What a bizarre thing to ask. Fish and chips is just that - fish and chips. If done properly then they’re cooked in beef dripping.

Travelledtheworld · 02/05/2021 14:19

If you are vegan, why do you want to eat fish and Chips ?

Not really. Plenty of places do vegan fish and chips, as this thread proves.. its bizarre you've come on the thread to comment that though

Separately probably but deep frying in different oil? Doubt it!

PattyPan · 02/05/2021 14:20

@Travelledtheworld because you like the taste but don’t want a creature to die for your lunch? Pretty obvious really

sashh · 02/05/2021 14:21

We live in Yorkshire, and struggled one year to find a fish and chip shop in Bridlington that sold chips cooked in vegetable oil.

Would walk out of a chip shop in Brid that didn't use beef dripping. It's the best part of holidays in Yorkshire.

She doesn't. She wants vegan fish.. something to replicate the taste of fish? Is that really that hard to understand?

@Travelledtheworld

Vegan for the animals and environment. But if I can replicate taste, texture and familiar means why not? The majority of vegans are vegan for the same reasons not because we despise the flavour of all meat / dairy products. It's like using a dildo, same effect and no broken hearts in the process ;)
DioneTheDiabolist · 02/05/2021 14:29

Nope, it's not a bizarre thing to ask on a chat site. What is bizarre are the posters who pretend they don't understand the very simple premise of the thread.

Ariela · 02/05/2021 14:31

Surely it's 'fish' or 'not fish'? There can be no such thing as vegan fish.

poppycat10 · 02/05/2021 14:35

@Travelledtheworld

Well you might want chips but I don't get why you'd want a fish substitute. Yuck. Either eat fish or don't. But each to their own I guess.

I've got to say that this thread has not inspired me to become vegan. Banana as a fish substitute? Bleugh.

poppycat10 · 02/05/2021 14:39

Soya protein cylinder is ridiculous compared to vegan sausage

I don't disagree that "soya protein cylinder" is ridiculous but why not just call it a soya sausage? It's still a sausage, it's just not a pork or beef or chicken sausage. Vegan only tells you it's vegan, not what's in it.

YellowScallion · 02/05/2021 14:39

Agree, if you try and find chips suitable for coeliacs you'll find there's not many places that don't fry everything together.

lynsey91 · 02/05/2021 14:39

Don't bother going to Whitby. We went there a couple of years ago. Got some chips, ate about 2 each and threw the rest in a bin.

We could not work out what the strange taste of them was - they were disgusting. Then found out all the fish shops fry in beef dripping.

I mean just why? My sister, who is not vegetarian, says she eats meat but doesn't want her fish fried in meat dripping.

PattyPan · 02/05/2021 14:41

@poppycat10 it’s not banana fruit! That would be gross, it’s banana blossom which has a kind of fish-like texture when cooked

SpringtimeSummertime · 02/05/2021 14:48

Banana blossom ‘fish’ (see pic) 😳

Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?
AndeanMountainCat · 02/05/2021 14:56

Thanks for this thread, op. I’m hungry now!

I haven’t heard of the banana blossom thing before. I still haven’t tried jack fruit either.

CrepuscularCritter · 02/05/2021 15:04

Expanding the coastal options, there's the Lime Crab in New Quay, West Wales. Plenty of vegan options, plus gluten and dairy free fish cooked in tempura batter. Vegan ice cream at the shop up the road too; I could eat my bodyweight in the bitter chocolate orange. Grin

But if you're not ordering it why bother being irritated by the name of it?

Sausages aren't called nose/arsehole/ear cylinders are they

Minezatea · 02/05/2021 15:13

It’s an alternative designed to replicate the taste and texture (in the case of banana blossom) of fish though.

Really! Wow. epic fail then!! I love quorn stuff but it is in no way comparable to meat. I guess if you've not eaten meat for a long time you might 'fall for that'.

Minezatea · 02/05/2021 15:15

You learn something every day and I had no idea that fish and chips are sometimes? often? cooked in beef dripping. I will be asking now for my interest to see what I'm eating!
