Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

The Boathouse in Portobello Edinburgh. It's a lovely place.

Anything to do in Brighton?

Crikey. How can you have missed the hype around Brighton?

Scarby9 · 02/05/2021 11:05

I was with a vegan in a fish and chip cafe in Whitby who found the vegan burger that he had had before and that he had been dreaming of during our walk had sadly sold out. He asked what else they had that was vegan and ordered that with chips.
The waitress walked away then came back and said, 'You do realise that the chips aren't vegan?'
He was compleyely thrown, having been vegan on animal welfare grounds for over 20 years but eaten chips from that cafe and others tthroughout. It had never occurred to him that they were not cooked in vegetable oil.

It does make you wonder how some people function in every day life!

From my experience in Bridlington I suspect a lot of chip shops on the Yorkshire coast fry their chips in dripping.

@BrittanyKAMA

Thanks for the suggestions! I am east coast but thought it might be a helpful thread for people across the country.
East coast can mean anything from Sutherland to Kent. Assuming you mean the U.K.

Hmm
Chemenger · 02/05/2021 11:14

The chips in the famous Anstruther Fish Bar alluded to in a PP are not vegan.

FeatheredHope · 02/05/2021 11:15

Fried banana blossom or tofu is not “vegan fish”.
Fish is not vegan.
There is nothing wrong with not eating fish or enjoying an alternative fried option but I hate this BS mixed up language. But I appreciate that’s just me being an old stick in the mud.

The original question was fair enough but "is there anything to do in Brighton?" is odd! It's a well known tourist destination, of course there's stuff to do.

You never do research? Look for ideas on-line? Ask others if they know of anywhere? Ask for recommendations?

I think we might try Brighton. What’s it like there? Is there anything to do, any nice shops, etc?
Sadly, no. Not a single thing to do. Not one single shop. Just a group of old fisherman sitting around who will tell you stories of the unforgiving briny depths if you toss them either £5 or a Starbucks gift card. Wink
HoppingPavlova · 02/05/2021 11:45

There is no such thing as vegan fish. You are after a fish and chip shop that has vegan items in the menu, not vegan fish as that’s impossible.

WhySoSensitive · 02/05/2021 11:46

There’s absolutely nothing to do in Brighton. It’s an empty hole of nothingness.

Another thing to consider. Being a pescatarian, I had been eating fish and chips from my local for a while . One day I asked them if they had separate frying facilities for their sausages etc to be told no. Everything was fried in the same oil!!!! Luckily, I found another place not to far away which cooks their fish , chips and meat products in separate fryers.
RightYesButNo · 02/05/2021 11:48

@WhySoSensitive Ah, I see you’ve been there, too! People will keep insisting that Brighton exists.

Yorkterrier · 02/05/2021 11:48

There are a few shops in Brighton and a couple of cafes too I think.

I agree. Horrible bland place, nasty pebbly beach, boring people, everything is grey and drab. Utterly lifeless. Don't go.

Really? I never knew about the gays. Are you sure?
