Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

I've never even seen Vegan fish and chips....I didn't even know that was a thing because gosh isn't vegan. Mind you I don't hang out in the hip metropolis of Brighton....perhaps it's truly mind opening.

@Pinetreesfall you can get vegan fish and chips in Greene King pubs!

@OnlyInYourDreams

Odd thread.

There’s no such thing as vegan fish and chips. Doesn’t matter if you call it fish, it’s not fish it’s some kind of alternative.

I really don’t understand this need for vegans/vegetarians to refer to things which are vegetarian in animal terms. If you don’t eat fish then don’t eat fish, but don’t pretend that something else is fish because it isn’t.

By all means look for a chip shop which fries in oil rather than dripping, and then hope they do some kind of veggie/vegan option as well as the fish…

I don't think it's the vegans and vegetarians doing this, rather it's the manufacturers and sales people. Tbh it annoys me, but what can you do?
OhWhyNot · 02/05/2021 15:58

Whitstable there are a few vegan places

I’m sure the posher fish and chip shop restaurants see vegan items. The sausage in batter was very disappointing for ds as it was a good sausage not the bready cheap ones we usually get

Mmm cod and chips fancy that now

PurpleSplodge · 02/05/2021 15:58

Eat what you want.

Shakey shakey in Ramsgate do a loads of vegan things. Also a GF menu.

Not every vegan/vegetarian hates meat/fish. I sometimes eat meat so am not either but I do like to reduce my intake of meat from a sustainability point of view. Why not replace it with fake fish/fake meat? It a marketing thing. Battered banana blossom doesn't really make me think of a chippy where as vegan fish does...?

Each to their own. 🤷‍♀️

schroeder · 02/05/2021 16:00

It makes me sad all the hate on here for vegetarians and vegans.Sad

Booksandwine80 · 02/05/2021 16:07

Vegan fish? I’ve had a couple of wines but can anyone explain?!Grin

Soubriquet · 02/05/2021 16:07

Some people are really against veganism aren’t they?

This thread proved it. The OP only asked and people were scorning her. She wasn’t even trying to make others eat vegan just asking for where to get it

On the other hand, most chips in a fish and chip shop are cooked in beef dripping so if you are vegan or vegetarian you need to ask

Nope, a dildo is a lacklustre, below par and emotionless experience. The real thing is always better. Much like proper fish and chips.

And it's not hate for vegans at all. We are all just sick of everything eaten being started off with the word vegan...just so they can remind you yet again that they are vegan and oh so special. Hmm

Soubriquet · 02/05/2021 16:18

But if they don’t say vegan fish and chips, then how are you supposed to know they want plant based food?

It’s easier to say vegan fish and chips than it is to say soy fish like patty and chips fried in vegetable oil not beef dripping

Heyha · 02/05/2021 16:26

I heard the original Brighton pier burnt down after a fire at the world's fourth vegan chip shop.

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/05/2021 16:30

We are all just sick of everything eaten being started off with the word vegan...

A couple of points:

  1. Had the OP not put Vegan in the subject heading she would have a very different thread.
  2. If you are sick of the word vegan, don't click on threads about vegan food.🤣🤣🤣
user1496345234 · 02/05/2021 16:35

There was an episode of food unwrapped not too long ago that featured a fish and chip shop that sold battered banana blossom that fooled many into thinking it was real fish. I can't remember where this shop was but it might be worth looking it up Smile

BrittanyKAMA · 02/05/2021 16:40

This. Absolutely this.

Ok so people need to chill a bit about the phrasing of “vegan fish” and understand that what the OP means is:

“Is there anywhere on the coast that sells a vegan substitute for fish & chips”

But that’s a bit long-winded and no one (not least vegans) thinks that fish is vegan, however the OP is asking for the “fish n chips” experience for a vegan- ie the batter, the deep fried-ness, the flavour, the salt n vinegar, but with a vegan substitute for the fish such as banana blossom.

So it’s not “vegan fish”.
It’s “vegan fish-n-chips” or “a vegan substitute for fish and chips.

Keepyourdistance000 · 02/05/2021 16:42

Where are you? How far are you prepared to travel?

RampantIvy · 02/05/2021 16:46

Wow! This has escalated. I'm not vegan. I'm not even vegetarian, but I don't understand why a question enquiring about the availability of a vegan substitute for fish and chips has resulted in such an unpleasant pile on for the OP Confused

It is unwarranted and unkind.

We are all just sick of everything eaten being started off with the word vegan.

What exactly is your point? Describing a food item as vegan simply means it is suitable for vegans. Non vegans know perfectly well that vegan "fish" or vegan "sausages" contain no fish or meat, and most of us don't have an issue with that.

In terms of vegan substitutes, as a meat eater I don't find banana flowers or jackfruit resemble meat in any way - taste or texture wise. As DD is vegetarian and often does veganuary I have tried a number of vegan foods and vegan meat/fish substitutes, and some are better than others.

The best fake "meat" I have ever tasted was at an excellent vegan cafe in Sheffield. Their food was creative and inspirational.

Vegans are sick of meat-eaters constantly commenting unhelpfully on vegan posts just so they can remind you yet again that they are hard of thinking Hmm

Soubriquet · 02/05/2021 17:15

I’m not vegan or even vegetarian and even I think people are being dicks with the wording here

I’m just trying to imagine myself, as a vegetarian, seeing a thread on here asking for recommendations for the best place to get a rare steak on the South Coast, actively deciding to click on it, and telling everyone on it how shitty their food choices are and how, disgusting, personally, I find steak. But I can’t see myself ever doing that- because I’m not a dick, I suppose Hmm

minniemomo · 02/05/2021 18:18

Yes, many places here do including our local pub but we are close to Bristol so vegans abound

Booksandwine80 · 02/05/2021 18:23

It’s not about being “anti vegan” it’s about bullshit bollocks like “vegan fish” I mean, wtf?! Hmm

Yorkshireswithallroasts · 02/05/2021 18:24

@LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell

If you're in Swansea (bit of a long shot) then Canteen 18 does amazing tofish and chips
I’m not vegan but I’m in Swansea and have never heard of Canteen 18, where is it?
