Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

What is vegan fish? Surely there is no such thing?

featheredhope as someone who should be hand lettering a menu right now, let me tell you that a short heading followed by a description in smaller lettering is an absolute mercy, and in most cases I imagine is the real reason why this is done. I ain’t trying to fit “Seaweed wrapped block of tofu battered and deep fried” into one line when “Vegan fish” will do.

@EssexLioness

I’m in Southend and there are at least 3 places that I can think of that does, although the vegan pub opposite the station has closed down now due to COVID. I’m vegan and Southend is spoilt in terms of vegan eateries in general
I'm not vegan and I'm absolutely devastated it closed. The pizza was actually delicious! If anywhere could have challenged my omnivorous ways it would have been The Railway, they even changed their wines over to all vegan.

crackofdoom you make a good point. Although i would have thought “fried tofu” would also work ;)

I ain’t trying to fit “Seaweed wrapped block of tofu battered and deep fried” into one line when “Vegan fish” will do.

Or battered tofu?

Only three more letters and far more accurate.

What is someone doesn't like tofu or is allergic to soy products?

'Excuse me but what's your vegan fish made of? Is it tofu, seitan, quorn, banana blossom, jackfruit, MDF or bath sponge?'

JUST WRITE BATTERED TOFU.

@EssexLioness May I ask which vegan restaurants you would recommend in Southend? Thanks.

@BrittanyKAMA, most places do a decent range of dishes here, especially if you go to Leigh. Saltwater Cafe is right on the seafront and do a few nice dishes. My favourite fully vegan places are The Grizzly Vegan, Oak Tree and The Acorn (though this is currently closed still due to COVID as they can’t socially distance as it’s small). There’s also a couple of places where you can get vegan ice creams on the seafront: Rossi’s and one of the others, though I’m not sure of the name.
The Fish House do various vegan bits, all in separate fryer, including nuggets and battered sausage. Fridays The Grizzly Vegan do chip shop nights, so tofish, battered sausages etc

@Sillyduckseverywhere, I know. The food was amazing, especially the pizza. They have been struggling for the past year or so but I was really hoping they would pull through

Imissmoominmama · 08/05/2021 11:31

Tofish is a good word!

Alix52 · 10/04/2022 11:43

Have just read your post and just letting you know that Gabbys chip shop in Bridlington Old Town cooks in rapeseed oil and does lots of vegan options. Think you have to pre order though 🤔 may be closed on a Sunday too .
