Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

It's like calling artificial sweeteners "sugar free sugar"

MissTrip82 · 03/05/2021 09:39

Lol rolling your eyes at ‘vegan fish’ or claiming it’s ‘all mixed up’.

😂😂😂😂😂😂

So many precious petals.

Not to mention the ‘what is vegan fish’? 😂😂 really? Really can’t even hazard a guess as to what that might mean?

I’m not vegan. But I’m not an insecure dick either.

@YouCanCallMeBob

Yes I agree, Soup. See my post at 9.37 :)
It doesn't sound like an agreement at all Confused

There’s absolutely nothing to do in Brighton. It’s an empty hole of nothingness.

I think the wording is silly on many of these vegan products but I just don’t agree about the reason for it is ‘vegan delusion’

YouCanCallMeBob · 03/05/2021 09:42

Okay soup! Maybe see my comment at 9.41 then

I was speaking to someone who does food marketing and he said the reason for the meat names is that it has encouraged sales because people know what to serve with the food. So people associate fish and chips the way the OP did. So rather than saying battered tofu and chips if they says vegan fish and chips, people have an idea of what it is.

I suppose that's because they are assuming a lot of people buying vegan food are doing it to replace meat meals (so facon instead of bacon etc)!

Here's a totally calorie free and alcohol free gin and tonic. Actually it's just a glass of sparkling water but I'm thinking of patenting it. It doesn't taste much like gin and tonic, but the mouth feel is identical and it looks identical so I don't think it's a huge leap if you are trying to avoid both calories and alcohol, do you?

YellowScallion · 03/05/2021 09:48

I wish places would describe things more accurately, it's a nightmare if you have allergies or intolerances and things are described as vegan '...' with no indication of the constituent ingredients. I'm allergic to bananas, I have no idea whether that extends to banana blossom but had never previously considered bananas would be going in a fryer alongside chips.

There’s probably a reason you are craving fish.....it’s nutritious protein which sadly most vegans are lacking

YouCanCallMeBob · 03/05/2021 10:05

YouJust, actually have a look at the seedlip website. Sorry can’t do a link. They totally trade off their approximation to gin . They call it a spirit. It’s not delusional it’s marketing to aid consumer choice.

Only if they eat a really poor quality diet. Totally possible to be vegan with plenty of protein and no fake meat at all.
Poorlykitten · 03/05/2021 10:11

I don’t understand why anyone would get worked up by naming things ‘vegan fish and chips’ or ‘vegan sausages’.Life is way too short. It’s just a marketing ploy.

YouJustFoldItIn · 03/05/2021 10:15

I know Seedlip. I've had it. It tastes vaguely bitter like alcohol but it tastes nothing like gin. But it does taste similar to an alcoholic drink compared to a non-alcoholic one. If you want to feel that you are drinking something 'grown up tasting' and not a fizzy pop or fruit juice then it sort of does the job, I suppose. It's compared to gin but it's not called gin. There are lots of alcohol free 'gins' on the market, Gordons even makes one. But they can't legally call it gin because it isn't gin. ven though the bottle looks the same as Gordon's gin, they call it Gordon's 0% Spirit.

They don't call it gin. Because it's not gin.

Banana blossom tastes absolutely nothing like fish and it's not fish. Seitan tastes absolutely nothing like chicken and it's not chicken.

What's the point in going to the coast for vegan fish?
The whole point of going to the coast for fish and chips is that the fish is fresh off the boat, so much nicer than fish that's traveled before being cooked.

YouJustFoldItIn · 03/05/2021 10:22

Of course it is. No-one 'needs' fake meat. They do need adequate protein though, however that is achieved.

It's almost impossible to get the required amounts of B12, vitamin D and long-chain omega-3s though a vegan diet, without resorting to supplement tablets.

Doghead · 03/05/2021 10:28

Only a vegan would wake with a 'yearning' to sit on a beach eating fish and chips. Every vegan I've ever met has overly dramatised everything 😂

YouJustFoldItIn · 03/05/2021 10:30

There is nothing wrong with not eating fish or enjoying an alternative fried option but I hate this BS mixed up language. But I appreciate that’s just me being an old stick in the mud.

No, it's just you being a logical, rational human being. It's just occurred to me though, that this fad for regarding plant based foodstuffs as something other than what they actually are, goes hand in hand with the current fad for identity politics generally.

It looks like even lumps of tofu can now identify as a cow.

Sadly. Right. Bet you're devastated for them.

The reality is that vegans are mostly very aware of what they are eating and are therefore very good at ensuring they achieve a good protein intake. Plenty of protein available from plants. But many thanks for your concern.

To enjoy the fresh air and seeing the sea?

What's the point in going to have a picnic in a park when you could just sit on the living room floor and eat your sandwiches...

YouJustFoldItIn · 03/05/2021 13:11

Because fish and chips is seen as a coastal 'thing' because of the...er....fish.

If you want to eat banana blossom in batter you can do that in Peckham or Wolverhampton, I imagine.

Have a fun day out at the coast and eat what you like, or stay in Wolverhampton and eat what you like. Don't drive to the coast to eat deep fried banana blossom and tell yourself it's all part of a day at the seaside. It ain't.
