With my MN chicken I made 17 meals and three sandwiches.

It can be done!
Large chicken, don't know the weight but it took 2 hours 5 minutes to cook.
We had -
Roast dinner for five.
Chicken fajitas for four.
Chicken and bacon pie for five.
Risotto for three.
And three chicken salad sandwiches.

Two adults, the secondary school kids. Maybe we just don't eat much so our portions are small.

Dunno, looks like America...?

@imalmostthere

One chicken breast between four for fajitas?? 😂😂😂😂
Yes! I want space to fit in refried beans, guacamole and sour cream!
maddiemookins16mum · 19/04/2021 22:08

Nah, pull the other (chicken) leg.

Now steak on the other hand - ain't having a small portion of a nice juicy steak!

Kendodd · 19/04/2021 22:12

Admittedly I do try to reduce meat use, but we all had as much as we wanted. Vegetables are better.

We eat a chicken between us, dd is veggie Blush. Keep hoping for leftovers but dp picks the chicken when he puts the dishwasher on before going to bed!

Flibbitygibbit · 19/04/2021 22:15

We had a large chicken and there were 3 of us and the cat. We had a roast and I chucked the rest away . Cat loves it though tbf.

‘One chicken breast for 4 people’ has cheered me right up! Thanks for the late night lols!

I must be weird because I’d do a breast per person and I reckon all diners would still be able to taste the guacamole, onions, cheese, soured cream and peppers.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 19/04/2021 22:22

So glad I don't live in your house! DS and DH can eat a chicken on their own.

Kendodd · 19/04/2021 22:23

Too much chicken!
A whole chicken breast on a fajita! It would fill it up completely there'd be no room for all the rest.

I bet you wouldn't have the quantity of other bits we'd have. How do you physically wrap a tortilla with half a chicken breast and half a dozen other ingredients in? One strip of pepper and a teaspoon of guacamole, couple of dots of sour cream? That'd be your lot.
titchy · 19/04/2021 22:26

Even Jamie Oliver says half a breast per person.

magicstar1 · 19/04/2021 22:27

Bloody hell. I do a roast chicken for DH and I. He has two wings, a leg and half a breast. I have the other half breast and a leg...I take some of the leg meat and DH strips the rest clean. We also have carrot & turnip mash, peas, green beans, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, cauliflower cheese and gravy.

FrangipaniBlue · 19/04/2021 22:27

Half a large breast is about 35g protein, so 75% RDA. What on earth is wrong with that?

The average person needs 0.75g protein per kilo of body weight, so your calculation only applies to people who weigh around 62kg, this would be a slim woman?

and that's only for a fairly sedentary/inactive person; anyone who exercises needs more.

You threw it out Shock That's an awful waste. I get that I am very frugal and bulk meals out with veg, but wasting all that chicken is pretty bad. If you eat meat personally I think you should use as much meat as possible, for welfare and environmental reasons.
Kendodd · 19/04/2021 22:32

That makes it sound like fat people need more food than skinny people? Maybe they do? Maybe they use up more calories getting around, I suppose that would make sense.

Who said anything about only eating 1 fajita?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Who takes life advice from that git? My son is 5ft, 4in and only 50kgs. He's on Ensure powder to encourage weight gain but he's growing at warp speed and eating everything in sight.

Agree with PP. This is a disgusting waste.
heyduggeemyhero · 19/04/2021 22:35

@Kendodd

Did you make stock?

I did, and the risotto (made with dried soup mix, barley etc, not rice) was made with the stock. The chicken skin was crisped in the oven and cut up on top so it actually have very little chicken meat in it.

That's not a risotto
Kendodd · 19/04/2021 22:35

It's not about bulking meals out though, the veg is just part of the meal. I don't get this bulk meals out stuff. I've never heard anyone say they bulk meals out with meat.

OP posts:
BlackeyedSusan · 19/04/2021 22:36

it depends in how much chicken you eat in proportion to veg.

If you have been brought up with parents who were brought up in ww2, thier view of a portion of veg is probably considerably smaller than those who were not subject to rationing.

If you were brought up with not much money, then portions of meat were also small.

if you are budgetting with not shopping, also portions will be smaller.

If you are cutting back on meat as part of protecting the environment, then you will also use smaller portions.

if you eat a veg rich diet then the meat is not the main part of the meal. when cooking things like chicken curry or pie, the size of the portion is smaller.

regularly managed to make a chicken last a week for two toddlers and two adults because a roast meal was full of lots of different veg, stuffing, yorkshire puds etc.

however, If I were left alone with a freshly roast chicken... and had none of the concerns listed above well, there might not be much left!

The shouting made me laugh even more!

You can have more than one or two fajitas you know? Three smaller is an actual thing!

DIshedUp · 19/04/2021 22:36

If you like veggies so much why do you feel the need to add chicken to every meal?

You could perfectly reasonably had a normal sized portion of roast and pie, then veggie risotto and fajitas? The problem seems to be the inability to eat a vegetarian meal and the desperate need therefore to spread out a chicken

I could make 100 meals out of one chicken if I added 1 peice of chicken to every meal. But my chicken hasn't actually fed 100 people, just because you put a bit of chicken in 17 meals does not 17 meals make.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 19/04/2021 22:37

Ah, @titchy, you can have more than one. It’s ok. It’s probably not every day and we won’t tell.

Go on. Treat yo’self.
