With my MN chicken I made 17 meals and three sandwiches.

It can be done!
Large chicken, don't know the weight but it took 2 hours 5 minutes to cook.
We had -
Roast dinner for five.
Chicken fajitas for four.
Chicken and bacon pie for five.
Risotto for three.
And three chicken salad sandwiches.

Two adults, the secondary school kids. Maybe we just don't eat much so our portions are small.

I had one wing and a bit of thigh meat, about two tablespoons full.

A wing is pretty much 90% bone!

PickAChew · 20/04/2021 19:01

@QueenPaw

I'm making my tea and looking at my portions like Confused am I way off?! So this is the veg, I'm added an egg, 125g rice and the chicken is 100g (raw) plus about half a bag of spinach
All looks a decent amount.

Are you sure you didn't get your chicken mixed up with an emu.

Half a breast and a wing giving one and a half litres of chicken,,a whole chicken doesn’t even give that.😂

Op, did you actually mean to type it was a 15 pound turkey? Did you look at the label? Did it seem a bit dry to you....did it have a bit of a purpely tinge to it..😂

Kendodd · 20/04/2021 19:24

I've never read so much tripe in my whole life.

12 pages of it no less!

Posters often go on about the mythical MN chicken and that it doesn't exist. It does! I expected a couple of other posters might out themselves and admit they get three full family meals from a large chicken as well but it seems it's just me.

I read a thread on here years ago where the OP said for a roast chicken dinner 4 of them share a chicken thigh.

And she wasn't joking. Might have been the thread that started all this actually.

My DCs wouldn't find 1/4 of a chicken breast enough but would want more than one fajita too.

I'm loving your posts @Kendodd , who's winding who up ?!

Whichever, it's a fun thread Grin

How much did this chicken weigh?

A bit of thigh, 1/2 a breast, a wing and the rest of the scrappy bits is 1 and a half litres?? Confused

MrsRockAndRoll · 20/04/2021 22:12

@ChubbyLittleManInACampervan

I am like you OP

I also turn the feet into a meal though (they get lovely and jellied with crunchy knuckles) and top it off we have chicken- quesadillas, where we make cheese quesadillas and briefly place them in the tray we normally use for roasting, so they get that “chicken aura”

We also turn the ribs into tiny Chinese spare ribs, which is the basis for another meal

1 chicken normally lasts us at least 10 days (you amateur Wink)

😂
MrsRockAndRoll · 20/04/2021 22:16

@Kendodd

So our roast dinner - The two legs went on two plates but some of the thigh meat stayed attached to the bird so didn't make those plates. I had one wing and a bit of thigh meat, about two tablespoons full. Most of one breast on another plate, 2/3 of a breast say. About half, or slightly less a breast on the last plate (and half of that wasn't eaten so the dog had it).

We also had two or three golf ball size potatoes each.
A large spoonful of carrots, broccoli, green beans and red cabbage, so four spoonfuls of veg.
And about half or quarter a roasted onion each.

We would usually have stuffing but didn't that day because I didn't have any sausages.

The food is all put in dishes on the table so people can help themselves to as much or a little as they like. The only thing I ask (which is ignored) is that they only put as much food as they'll eat on their plate, they can always get more if they want.

I don't think that's an unreasonable meal, it's a full plate.

This left about a litre and a half jug full of chicken meat that I picked off. Probably about third of that was shredded and cooked with peppers etc for the fajitas. I think the meat is better shredded through as you get bits of chicken everywhere without any big dry chunks. I didn't have any so this fed four. We all usually have one big fajita each, sometimes two. I don't think any of us have ever had three but people can have as many as they want.

Didn't watch the kids make their sandwiches so couldn't say how much went in, one might have had loads (by our standards) one might have had hardly any. They all put salad veg on the sandwiches usually although have to admit, I didn't see.

This leaves just over half a litre of chicken which went in the pie with almost a whole pack of bacon. Pie also had leeks and mushrooms. This was served with veg and fed five.

The 'risotto' was made from the stock from the boiled bones with chicken skin 'crackling' on top (Jamie Oliver tip). I had one portion of this when the others had fajita, two portions when in the freezer.

Dog had white grizzly bits and that dark livery bits inside the rib cage as I didn't want that in the stock.

I don't get the outrage about my chicken use!

Oh and for the person who asked, yes it was organic, it was from the farm shop. Smile

And KFC I have a two piece meal but don't usually finish all the chicken.

@Kendodd can we have a picture of your next meal?

I usually don't check up on posters, but this one seemed weird. I think op perhaps has some issues with food.

An old post about snacks: Nothing against fruit but want something else. It's for tuck at primary school (which imo is nonsense anyway, they don't need it, they are not going to starve to death between breakfast and lunch, but they all take it).

Sorry OP, but it's okay to eat.

CityCommuter · 20/04/2021 22:47

This thread would be excellent material for stand up! I can guarantee Micky Flannigan would have great fun with it and have everyone in hysterics! 😂. He might also be delighted that he's 'made it' on Mumsnet...

Hm2020 · 20/04/2021 23:26

One chicken breAst in for fajitas no way... love these threads I could probably eat a hole rotisserie chicken to my self in 3 sittings on the same day do I win?

RolloverRollover · 20/04/2021 23:28

Love this thread.

Excellent.

I eat a whole chicken to myself.

OhShitShit · 21/04/2021 01:07

In honour of this thread- and my hello fresh box just not turning up this week- I have in fact eked half a rotisserie chicken out over 3 meals.

Meal 1- Chicken leg and fries and salad
Meal 2- large half of the breast sliced (not grated) into homemade egg fried rice
Meal 3- tomorrow - small half of the breast will go into a sandwich

Daresay the op would consider this profligate, particularly as I scarfed the skin and the wing on taking it out of the oven, as a little amuse Bouche. Could’ve made it 5 meals at least...

BadLad · 21/04/2021 03:41

Useful tips 😂😂😂😂

Here's a tip, @Bluntness100 . If you're ever invited the OPs house for fajitas, have a snack before you go.

Imnotbent · 21/04/2021 06:17

@Giantrooster have you NC for this thread? 🐔

I woke up thinking about thr beast of a chicken whose half a breast and wing gives a litre and a half of meat,,,,

The only explanation is “chicken” was spelled “ big turkey” on the label..

With my MN chicken I made 17 meals and three sandwiches.
00100001 · 21/04/2021 09:18

I still am amazed how 1/2 a breast, a bit of thigh,a wing and scraps came to 1.5 litres.

What was the weight of the chicken OP?
