He died this morning

Please let this die a death.

www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/mps-want-a-new-%C2%A3190m-royal-yacht-as-a-prince-philip-memorial-%E2%80%93-and-people-arent-impressed/ar-BB1fxepw

MPs being urged to agree a new Royal yacht costing £190million in Philip's memory.

If they want to do anything, build a new hospital and name it after him.

But no no no to a royal yacht. One step too far in these difficult times.

Lockdownbear · 11/04/2021 17:21

I agree. He quietly does the most public engagements of all of them and has taken over the DoE awards. It’s no accident that he’s going to get the title of DoE when the Queen dies.

I thought Princess Royal did most engagements? But maybe she is doing less now.

It was reported Ed was offered Earl of Wessex or he could have had Duke of Cambridge.
But he opted for Wessex because of a Shakespeare play and the plan he could have DoE in the future.

Lockdownbear · 11/04/2021 17:25

That plan for a new yacht sounds bonkers. Britianna was decommissioned because of the cost.
He might have appreciated it while he was alive but a bit daft to do it now he gone.

Oh god, not that nonsense again Hmm
I recall a push for this around the time of the last jubilee; with the dreaded Mail running several ridiculous articles claiming it was really going to happen and that backers had already pledged help ... I can't find the original but there's a piece about it here: www.classicboat.co.uk/news/a-new-royal-yacht-yes-please-says-the-daily-mail/

Roussette · 11/04/2021 18:13

Yes, I think it rears its ugly head fairly regularly.

Johnson is a buffoon but even he wouldn't be stupid enough to sanction this in these days and times.

Frownette · 11/04/2021 18:15

A yacht is a crackers idea. They can get one themselves if they want to.

Roussette · 11/04/2021 18:18

Yes. And pay for the massive costs of running it. That is why it was de-commissioned, it was embarrassing how much it cost to sail it

Fact...
The Britannia was used just 31 days in 1991 at a cost of $18 million

Obscene

Pedallleur · 11/04/2021 18:23

Britannia was decommissioned as it was paid for by the RN who were scrapping warships due to budget cuts. Any number of beautiful boats out there that can be hired or are owned by people who are friends of the Royal Family and can loan them a boat

Lockdownbear · 11/04/2021 18:53

Exactly I'm sure if the RF really wanted a boat, they'd have a boat. The fact they dont, and haven't done for over 20 years tells me they aren't actually that bothered.

GCAcademic · 11/04/2021 19:11

The royal family wouldn't be daft enough to accept a yacht. They know very well how that would go down with the country. I can only think that those suggesting it must be closet republicans. Surely even Tory MPs can't be that out of touch.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 11/04/2021 20:42

I think Edward and Sophie come across as lovely and he as the one of the Queen's children who has caused her the least grief!

SallySycamore · 11/04/2021 20:46

Ruthie Henshall telling everybody she'd slept with him at Buckingham Palace on I'm a Celeb was probably a bit embarrassing!

I think they seem lovely too. Apparently they sometimes go and watch Strictly Come Dancing with the Queen.

My ds2 has met Sophie three times. She was the Royal Patron of the special school he used to attend. He called her Royal Sophie... I was there when he was presented to her when he won a school competition. She has the most fantastic empathy with special needs children. One of Ds2's friends is in a wheelchair and she knelt right down to his level. A really lovely lady.
londonlass48 · 11/04/2021 21:01

I wonder what the secret of Sophie and edwards marriage is? They married a bit older didn't they and no scandals at all?

Remember in the early 90s rumours he might be bisexual but never heard again

Wonder how these 2 got it right when his older 3 siblings married the wrong person (though x2 have had very long happy second relationships)

Frownette · 11/04/2021 21:04

Only slight scandal was Sophie and the shiek but I can't remember the details.

They do seem like a lovely couple.

Frownette · 11/04/2021 21:06

Sheikh, I can't spell

londonlass48 · 11/04/2021 21:52

What was that story @Frownette was it paying for access? Can't remember just remember they seemed to vanish from public life really. Even births of their children weren't a big deal and never been seen much have they?

I'm clueless about PR but wonder if H&M would be advised to do similar I'd listen to royal advisors eg lay low for 5yr then start some military / women's charity works and build up again, to rehabilitate their images

Pedallleur · 11/04/2021 21:53

He was let go from the Royal Marines training school supposedly as he couldn't make the grade but there were rumours ( never substantiated ) there was more to it. But they live well in a lovely house with seemingly not much to do apart from some flesh pressing.

derxa · 11/04/2021 21:56

Even births of their children weren't a big deal and never been seen much have they?f Sophie nearly died during the birth of one of her children.

Frownette · 11/04/2021 21:58

@londonlass48 if you google Sophie and the sheikh you'll find it Grin

I thought that the Queen wanted H&M to go to Africa for a few years after they got married? I can't imagine them keeping a low profile now what with netflix etc

I don't know what went wrong in Anne's first marriage, but Charles was an arranged marriage they'd only met a handful of times before the engagement. Can't remember the whole story of why he didn't marry Camilla in the first place. Andrew, they spent so much time apart and would probably have never divorced if the papers hadn't published the toe sucking incident.

By the time it came to Edward and William the RF gave them plenty of time to get to know one another in private, get to know how the RF work.
Harry's previous girlfriend's were younger and had the same slow quiet introduction. The RF tried to tell him to slow. Time will tell how that works out.

He wasn’t let go. He left of his own volition having bravely decided he was unsuited to the Marines. What exactly do you want them to do? Stack shelves?

I suspect they would like a boat. They (or we) just can’t afford one.
evilharpy · 11/04/2021 22:25

I don't think I'd ever seen an interview with Edward or heard him speak before the interview today. I thought he seemed like a nice chap (very unlike his pompous brother even before all the scandal) and Sophie is lovely.

Lockdownbear · 11/04/2021 22:27

Maybe but they have plenty private money to pay for one.

They could even use it for posh ££££ cruises when they aren't using it. Make a business of it and get it to pay for itself. Bit like people who own caravans and rent them out to cover the costs.
