The vanuatu tribe in the south pacific who worship Prince Philip as a god is one of the most fantastically bonkers things I ever heard Grin

All those framed photos and union jacks. Apparently they're devastated by his death

Tealightsandd · 12/04/2021 00:18

I was reading about the tribe. I found it rather touching. They live in quite a lot of poverty and hoped Prince Philip would return to bring them prosperity.

Wouldn't it be lovely if, instead of a statue, some kind of funding was donated to them in his name.

Frownette · 12/04/2021 00:30

@Tealightsandd that is a lovely idea!

Tealightsandd · 12/04/2021 00:32

I was thinking about it today. I'd definitely like to donate. I felt so moved reading about them.

That resale is a good idea.
RickiTarr · 12/04/2021 13:17

Really, not resale 🙄

I'd really like it to happen. I don't know if there's a way of doing it. Crowdfunding? Petition?

I didnt just say eye colour did I, I said height clothes, hair colour too. Don't just pick out one thing and use it out of context.

End of the day I cns choose how o wish to describe a person, you just don't like it and somehow find if offensive that I choose not to pick skin colour to describe someone.

Lol honestly your coming across batshit crazy.[/quote]
Not as bat shit crazy who is willing to describe a person by height, eye colour, hair colour but would never ever mention skin colour even if it was the only easily distinguishing feature.

HypocriteHunter · 12/04/2021 16:29

Bugger I got it wrong. Sorry. (At least I know how to apologise eh?)

But I shall correct myself for cycling

Calling @ancientgran ‘bat shit crazy’ is the pot calling the kettle tall, bohemian, blue eyed and brunette.

Just not black eh?

HypocriteHunter · 12/04/2021 16:33

And not for one minute do I think ancientgran is batshit crazy.

So that just leaves the pot.

cyclingmad · 12/04/2021 19:41

@ancientgran

Well how many places have you been to where your in a room and everyone but one person has the same skin colour? Becayse that is literally the only situation I can see where I'd go yeah sure x person is black/white/brown

Your problem is you cannot imagine someone not needing to use skin colour. Well there are people who don't need to use it all the time or everytime they have to describe someone

I agree.

I would definitely like to give some money towards helping them.

Cornettoninja · 13/04/2021 15:37

Some members of the vanuatu tribe took part in a documentary about visiting England. Worth looking up if anyone is interested.

RickiTarr · 13/04/2021 15:49

I was reading last night about the whole economic situation on those islands. Trying to figure out who is who and what existing fundraising might be in place. (I got interrupted but I will have a longer look at the weekend.)

The tribe in question is in a very different financial position to the country as a whole.

The country sells passports for $150,000 dollars each. The tribe farm yams.

@Roussette
That's amazing, a bit sad that it's so long since they were visited by the RF, I think William should go on a mission to visit them.

Anne1958 · 13/04/2021 16:57

Years later I still think about a member of the BMC who was going to live on Vanuatu for a year or so with her husband who was training to be a Dr and had to work abroad as part of his training.

Roussette · 13/04/2021 16:59

I know, you're right. Their tribute to him was heartfelt.

I was amazed at how much the RF means to them and they know more about them than we do!
I gave them some of the new twelve sided £1 coins, they were over the moon as they had never seen them before.

Lockdownbear · 13/04/2021 17:22

Going by encyclopedia Britianna they went independent in 1979 which could explain why no RF have visited but not sure if they are still in the Commonwealth.

Roussette · 13/04/2021 18:01

It's part of the British overseas territory of St. Helena and Ascension Island, no idea about the Commonwealth!

Tealightsandd · 13/04/2021 18:07

Looks like a beautiful place @Roussette

I'd love to find out more about any kind of fundraising for them or how to donate something.

I'm going to try and find that documentary @Cornettoninja it sounds interesting.

Roussette · 13/04/2021 18:18

Yes it's a very treasured memory for me, I have millions of pictures. .

They are a very proud group of islanders with a serious fondness for all the RF, there are pictures of them everywhere!
Here is their tribute to Phillip, very touching.

No you have it the wrong way round. I might use the colour of their dress, or their hair, probably not their eyes to be honest. You were saying you have never used colour, you would use the others if you needed to. So if you were in a room with one person of a different colour you would ignore that most obvious distinguishing feature. Bit like saying in a room with 5 blondes and one with black hair and you couldn't mention the hair. Now that doesn't make sense so why would having to avoid mention of the colour of their skin make sense?

Out of interest I have often been in a room when there was only one person of a particular colour. I have been in a room when everyone else was black, I worked in an office where there were 4 white people and one black, one asian.

You have now changed your story and admit that if that was the most obvious distinguishing feature you would use it. So that's progress.

Tealightsandd · 13/04/2021 18:38

Thanks for the link Roussette
What a lovely tribute.

Through your link, I decided to look up the Tristan da Cunha Association. I think I've finally found some information on fundraising Smile I'm going to have a proper look later.
