@ancientgran

Well I haven't seen the need to refer to another person by the colour of their skin or ethnicity. I use their name. If I have to describe a person I've always used hair colour, height, eye colour instead. That must be handy so black/BAME/POC people like my husband would be someone with black hair, brown eyes and tall. So if there were half a dozen men like that you wouldn't think to say he's the black one? How hilarious. Talk about tying yourself up in knots about nothing.

Do you think it is offensive in some way to say his skin is brown, is he supposed to be grateful that you pretend you notice his hair, his eyes and his height but his skin is invisible to you. Actually I feel quite offended for him and my children so that's a first for you.

Well to be honest I'm not tying myself up on knots over it. I cant recall the last time I've had to describe someone. Nor have I been asked what does x person look like.

I'm not using those terms simply because I've not come across a situation where I've needed to.

derxa · 11/04/2021 09:16

I have no time for the modern witchfinders. Me neither. People are losing jobs and are living in fear due to this current climate. Joanna Cherry had to have security ramped up due to her gender critical stance.
The thing about Prince Philip was that he just said what he wanted and was only 'cancelled' by death.

IrmaFayLear · 11/04/2021 09:41

Wholeheartedly agree with this “witchfinding” business. And, as I said earlier, the “passes” handed out every so often. There was an article on this I read the other day, making the point that some people were “too cool to cancel” in spite of committing worse “crimes” than someone else who is torn to pieces.

The holier than thou stuff from some people (and posters on here) is sickening, really. I am not a religious person, but “let (s)he who is without sin cast the first stone” seems a mighty appropriate saying in this case.

IrmaFayLear · 11/04/2021 09:44

And those yelling “racism” at every turn, I’d like to see them defending Priti Patel to the same extent before they lay into people criticising Meghan. But, hmmm, surprise surprise, that sort of successful woman “doesn’t count^ . QED about choice of whom to cancel.

Erm she hasn't died and hasn't had wall to wall coverage on tv endlessly saying what a remarkable man he is and brushing off racism as though his comments were just funny gaffes and that the British public loved him for it.

Also this isn't a thread about priti but if there was I would comment on that

I'm not into the whole 'cancelling' culture. I just disagree about how they are portraying him, at least be balanced and stop shoving it down our throats that he was this great guy

Lockdownbear · 11/04/2021 09:49

@ancientgran

The tribe in Vanuatu who worshipped him have lost a God. I wonder how he felt about being a living God and I wonder if he will still be regarded as a God now he is no longer alive.
They've decided Charles will be their new God!Smile
Alsohuman · 11/04/2021 09:59

He was a great guy. He wasn’t perfect and nobody’s saying he was. Try looking at the people visiting Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle - there are lots of people of colour who don’t seem to have got the racist memo.

Cornettoninja · 11/04/2021 10:04

So you dislike the convention that in the period immediately following someone’s (anyone’s) death we tend to lay off the criticism? Which is mostly out of respect for their loved ones I think. That’s a pretty large cultural norm to take on - good luck changing that one.

Rest assured that there is no way PP’s failings and controversy will be erased from memory; it’s far too well documented to deny but immediately following his death is probably not the time to rehash that if you don’t want to appear tone deaf.

‘Shoved down our throats’ implies you have no choice but absorb the media information but you do have a choice, I’ve managed to avoid a lot of it simply because I’ve read/seen enough about his life and have no interest in reading more about it right now, I’m not offended by it though I just find something else to do. If you go looking for precisely the material bothering you (like this thread for example) then you’re basically causing your own annoyance.

ancientgran · 11/04/2021 10:11

They've decided Charles will be their new God That's interesting. I wonder how strange it must feel to be a member of one religion but regarded as a God in another. Nice that he sent them photos and they sent him a pig killing club, an unusual present but then the RF get lots of unusual gifts.

HypocriteHunter · 11/04/2021 10:11

So you are saying we cannot mention Priti because she isn’t dead and this thread isn’t about her.

Yet some were mentioning up Prince Andrew on a thread about Harry. And before you start, I’m not defending his alleged involvement in matters but some shoved that down our throats.

No one is saying the DofE was perfect. But he did good with his life.

And you should read jessstan’s post - because that said it perfectly.

There's no such thing as a 'thoroughly' good man. Everyone has flaws, it's called being human. Prince Philip was no different. However he was remarkable in many ways and did a lot of good.

You offended me by the way and so have no room to talk about The DofE offending others.

You are casting plenty of stones for one with so much manners and regard for other people.

I’ve got your measure lady.

Priti Patel uses her power in ways that actually affects real people, not the same thing at all.

I think the big difference between Meghan and Philip as outsiders who had challenges joining the RF is she moans about it and he got on with it. Lots of people with big challenges in life are irritated by a beautiful, wealthy, successful, privileged woman seemingly regarding herself as having such a hard time. That might be unfair as we all have challenges and we all have our own personality but whatever else you might think about Philip no one could say he indulged in self pity. I do think for lots of people find self pity irritating, we can all sympathise for a while but it does get waring.

I wondered if it was just me who thought that was a daft thing to say, ancientgran.

Why on earth would someone deliberately miss out one of a person’s distinguishing features if they were describing them to another?

ancientgran · 11/04/2021 10:33

@cyclingmad So you have had cause to describe someone by height or hair colour or eye colour but you have never had an occasion where skin colour or ethnicity would be relevant?

You said If I have to describe a person I've always used hair colour, height, eye colour instead. So why did you need to use other descriptors instead? Let's be perfectly honest skin colour would generally be a much clearer characteristic than eye colour. You clearly have some sort of issue with skin colour, so again I find that offensive so you are no different to Prince Philip, you have caused offence with how you have spoken about skin colour/ethnicity.

ancientgran · 11/04/2021 10:35

Why on earth would someone deliberately miss out one of a person’s distinguishing features if they were describing them to another?

Exactly, virtue signalling that actually isn't. Why would it be some sort of faux pas to say, "Ancientgran's husband is black?"

Lockdownbear · 11/04/2021 10:40

I think the big difference between Meghan and Philip as outsiders who had challenges joining the RF is she moans about it and he got on with it.

She definitely moans about it in public expecting other people to change. I'm sure he moaned in private but made changes when he could.

But remember he was never a complete outsider, mother born in Windsor Castle he was Royal blood and understands the Monarchy is only there with the will of the people.

HypocriteHunter · 11/04/2021 10:49

God knows how they’d describe me then!

Fat little old(er!) lady with grey hair. Fine if I was in a group of school kids.

A bit of a dilemma if I were in the Legion Bingo Hall.

Although I could be identified with just the three words immediately.

One being ‘the’. The last being ‘woman’. And the middle being....

Yup. You’ve guessed it. Wink

It doesn’t go away. It doesn’t wash off. And it is a source of astonishment, if not amusement, that some can’t bring themselves to say it out loud and go into some mealie mouthed justification or explanation that I am the little fat old lady with the grey hair and the navy top and matching trousers and the big handbag with the mouse keyring and round toed boots and the unconventional battered looking face...

I dont have an issue with skin colour, being Indian myself.

I just haven't needed to use skin colour to describe someone. When I've had to it its been to say to someone, 'Emily is over by the bar, she's the tall one with blond hair in a red dress.' It doesn't occur to me to say she is black, white etc.

Just because I dont use skin color to describe people it doesn't mean I have an issue or am virtue signalling. It just means I haven't needed to. Simple as that.

If that somehow bothers you thats on you.

Lol why cant you just use my username instead of acting childish and labelling me a witchfinder.

Did I say its wrong for anyone else to describe people by the colour of their skin? Tell me where I said that. Where did I say its offensive to describe your husband as black?

I'm am only speaking for myself that I haven't personally ever had to. And so what if I hadn't? What's its to you?

Being Indian, I've been on the receiving end of lots of racists comments so I have firsthand experience of what it feels like. I've also seen how other people have spoken about my skin colour, if I'm darker skinned and not fair skinned.

Maybe just maybe I dont use skin colour to describe people because other features like height or what a person is wearing is a better way to describe someone to whoever it is in describing them to.

I'm hardly going to say hey Emily is the black girl at the bar, if there are 3 black women at the bar. Who would know which one she was? Whereas Emily is the tall one at the bar in a red dress, is far more obvious.

So why don't you just back off

Alsohuman · 11/04/2021 11:18

So why don't you just back off

Possibly because you’re being ridiculous and calling racism where it doesn’t exist. Why don’t you just back off?

Marmaladeagain · 11/04/2021 11:25

You seem to drop being Indian into your posts quite often.

Are others allowed to mention that about you when describing you at the bar in that red dress with blonde hair, whilst you are tiptoeing around believing there is some sort of higher thinking in not mentioning physical characteristics to describe someone?

Weird to keep saying you're Indian but clarify NEVER, EVER occurs to you when looking at someone else whether they're Indian or black of white or East Asian etc... Bizarre, actually it's really funny.

Sorry don't really notice the names of the MN "offended" brigade!

Your name is irrelevant to me (bit like describing physical characteristics is to you, I guess?).

It isn't particularly to you that I'm speaking - you just happen to have the usual racist bingo phrases in your post and I'm responding to those, any number of other names say the same sort of thing on MN.

Sorry don't need to back off (as you suggest) as I'm not speaking to you in particular - I'm speaking to the collective MN witch finders; however, if it turns out that little pointy hat fits you, sorry and all that I'm sure you look charming in it,

I am able to describe what I see as what I see and I don't need to drop my heritage into every post like you do (oh the irony of the colour blind poster) Grin

HypocriteHunter · 11/04/2021 11:29

Exactly where were YOU actually called a witchfinder cycling?

I know you are trying to force your own agenda on this thread but I’m afraid you don’t get to tell people to back off when all they’ve done is question your posts.

You state and stop shoving it down our throats that he was this great guy

When are you going to stop ‘shoving it down our throats’ that he was not?

If you want to seek hate in everything you read and spout it out with gay abandon crack on. You will earn my pity.

Roussette · 11/04/2021 11:30

I'm speaking to the collective MN witch finders

FFS. That is rude. What shall we call you and your collective people? There are plenty of names I could think of, but will desist from saying them because it's not nice to lump posters together under a ridiculous name. You don't have to go round insulting groups of people just because they don't agree with you.

Marmaladeagain · 11/04/2021 11:31

ha ha funny - keep up - we're racists and bigots and worshiping PP for seeing any good in his life and pointing out people are human.
