Is quite interesting and hypnotic to watch the slow spread

The area is being evacuated, so they won't have a choice but to leave. I certainly wouldn't walk towards it either!

dustydaffs · 05/04/2021 14:09

@PuffinShop

New fissure is opening up right now!
Thanks for the heads up. I'm not surprised they are evacuating the area now.
TyneTeas · 05/04/2021 15:52

Thanks Tyne

sonjadog · 05/04/2021 17:24

The new fissure is pretty impressive now!

expectopelargonium · 05/04/2021 17:59

I'm hoping to be able to see some aerial shots of it soon, it looks like a really long fissure that's opened up.

Interesting pictures here. It's in Icelandic, I can't see a translation button though, sorry.

Cool drone footage. The lava is thin and is flowing extremely fast into a neighbouring valley (Meradalir, Mare Valleys) as you can see, estimated to be going around 10 metres per second.

PuffinShop · 05/04/2021 19:07

Kristín Jónsdóttir of the Met Office says that there was hardly any indication this would happen and that they are not yet sure what caused it. She says that the area is now significantly more dangerous because although the lava is flowing in a thin river right now, this could change and people would run the risk of escape routes getting shut off by lava flow.

expectopelargonium · 05/04/2021 19:13

Shock The speed of that stuff!

sonjadog · 05/04/2021 19:19

That drone footage is fascinating.

dustydaffs · 05/04/2021 19:26

Thank you Puffin

ameliajanes · 05/04/2021 19:31

Puffin do you think it's possibly going to flow into Kleifarvatn?

PuffinShop · 05/04/2021 19:48

I'm not a volcanologist but I'm pretty sure the chances of that are zero. It's quite far to Kleifarvatn and there are mountains in the way..

That make sense, I couldn't remember if there were mountains in the way as it's some years since I was there. Cheers.

For a real live view of the volcano, why not hitch a ride with albert in his back pack tomorrow night. I joined him last tuesday night. It really was amazing. The tour is completely free although you can tip if you like. Im going to join again tomorrow night.

I think it's not certain yet when/if the area will be opened to the general public again. It's just scientists, press and SAR right now. I'm sure it will be reopened as soon as it's deemed reasonably safe but not sure whether that will be the case tomorrow.

Becca19962014 · 05/04/2021 21:20

I very much doubt it will be tommorow. Looking at the feed for the second fissure that's spread a lot in the nine hours or so since it opened up. Probably this is also why the camera facing it is so far away compared to the other one looking at the first site (which doesn't offer such a good view of the first site).

I've spent far too much time watching these cameras!!

ConeHat · 05/04/2021 21:24

Wow the virtual trip sounds amazing if it can go ahead

It's the same camera - they just swivelled it round.

I'm looking at the live stream at the minute, there are actually people walking up quite close to it. They must be crackers.

I kinda miss the other volcano. I wish the camera would pan back to it from time to time so we can catch up with what it happening there.

Here you go k100streymi.mbl.is/spila/webcam0 Someone posted this earlier in the thread.

@expectopelargonium thanks for the correction. I had a look for any videos of the new fissure and saw that was what had happened in a sped up recording.

Becca19962014 · 05/04/2021 23:25

There is still a feed from the second site for the original on YouTube m.youtube.com/watch?v=I1I-0PUhFmU
