Is quite interesting and hypnotic to watch the slow spread

Don't ever go to Greenland then grin

Yes! But you do know that when the Vikings raided and pillaged Iceland they split the sacks of frozen peas stacked upon the shelves which got washed out to sea. Those marrowfats and petite pois floated across the Denmark Strait and the tide washed billions of them upon the beaches there and promptly froze permanently. That is how Greenland got its name.

en0la · 22/03/2021 21:57

Another addict here. I wish it helped me sleep though!

Explanation from somebody close up

MrsCaptainJakeBallard · 23/03/2021 21:35

Thanks for the new links, it's looking quite active tonight!

boatyardblues · 23/03/2021 22:28

www.volcanocafe.org/the-reykjanes-update/

There’s been another blogpost at volcano café. The post is 23h old but there is discussion in the comments about recent quakes in the area and an uptick in activity since around 5pm today noted.

boatyardblues · 23/03/2021 22:33

This tweet tickled me: mobile.twitter.com/IceSif/status/1374367662415904769

boatyardblues · 24/03/2021 06:47

There’s been snow on the fells overnight. There is a pleasing contrast just now between the white snow-covered hills and the black and orange pulsing lava field in the middle.

TyneTeas · 24/03/2021 07:52

Thanks for the links Smile

Couldn't get away yesterday and SAR cleared the area in the late afternoon anyway (due to the wind dying right down, which means poisonous gas can accumulate and reach lethal concentrations) but I now have solid plans to go this afternoon and the forecast looks perfect. I'm absolutely fizzing with excitement, can't concentrate on anything! We saw the glow in the sky from across the bay last night and that was pretty cool just by itself.

Not at all envious! much Grin
boatyardblues · 24/03/2021 10:48

Please, please post photos and an update of what it is like in real life Puffin. Is there masses of interest and awful traffic to get there? Where does everyone park? I remember from our Iceland trip there are large fines for taking your vehicle off the paved roads due to the fragile environment and slow recovery of the flora.

PuffinShop · 24/03/2021 11:05

Yeah, people are just parking in a long line along the side of the road. I'm definitely expecting it to be a bit chaotic and we'll almost certainly have to walk a few extra km down the road to the start of the marked trail. But I don't care, it's already a much shorter hike than many people did at the weekend when official advice was to park at the Blue Lagoon! The marked trail itself is 3.5 km, so not a crazy long hike at all.

Some idiots have been driving off-road and yes it is illegal and people have been fined.

It's snowing there at the moment!

TyneTeas · 24/03/2021 18:28

Yep, no volcanoes in sight!

there are two people on camera now. They can't see anything though so I guess their hike was wasted.

Currently watching snow hitting the lava.

Complete, steam whiteout.

@en0la

Here they are.
I hope that isn’t Puffinshop and her DH. 😕
en0la · 24/03/2021 18:57

It's all cleared now. We've had that when we have been driving with both snow and dust, clear one minute then white/brownout and then clear again in minutes.

en0la · 24/03/2021 19:54

I hope that isn’t Puffinshop and her DH.

@Boatyardblues I thought that too :-)
