Is quite interesting and hypnotic to watch the slow spread

That’s amazing

boatyardblues · 27/03/2021 06:24

@PuffinShop

Literally thousands of people are visiting every day that access is permitted - almost 5 thousand the day I went. SAR have set up two marked trails now, giving people options for when the wind changes direction. They are all volunteers and they are also there helping anyone who gets into trouble, monitoring gas levels, controlling access, directing traffic. Absolute heroes.

I'm already trying to organise to go back again. Nothing else to bloody do with the latest COVID restrictions just in time to ruin Easter, so it's brilliant to have the volcano as something positive.

Your alternative lockdown entertainment is the best. We’re stuck with the local park and takeaway coffee on a bench in the rain.

This brilliant YouTube with aerial footage was posted on Volcano Cafe in the comments:

A chunk of the back wall of the smaller one has just collapsed

Thanks for that Tyne, it's fascinating.

TyneTeas · 29/03/2021 21:14

It's looking very different from a few days ago!

It's turning out to be a shield volcano isn't it?
indecisivewoman81 · 29/03/2021 21:53

Love this; so will my 7 year old son

PuffinShop · 29/03/2021 22:00

Yeah they think it may develop into the first new shield volcano in Iceland for 3000 years. The lava will probably end up spilling out of the valley and the eruption may last a considerable time. This volcanologist believes it is unlikely to stop by itself.

boatyardblues · 30/03/2021 23:03

The people on Volcano Café posted a link earlier to a second camera with more of a side view on to the eruption: k100streymi.mbl.is/spila/webcam0

There are lots of idiots photo bombing the livestream cameras today, apparently because the wind changed direction and the authorities are directing visitors to that area.

TyneTeas · 31/03/2021 06:50

Thanks for those links Puffin and boatyard Smile

The hike to get there is looking quite arduous Shock

I don't think I would be in a hurry to attempt that Shock

Another drone view

Silvercatowner · 01/04/2021 13:05

It looks as if there's another vent opening up.

TyneTeas · 01/04/2021 18:45

Link to how lava might fill up valley within a week and perhaps head out to sea

Becca19962014 · 02/04/2021 22:40

Been watching on and off since this began. Looking at it today there have been smaller eruptions happening in the lava. It's been my channel to watch when it's dark, spectacular. Except the night when there was a blizzard of course! Tonight has been amazing.

boatyardblues · 03/04/2021 00:26

On this camera I can see small fountains intermittently to the right of the view out in the lava field. Are there new vents opening up under the lava field or is it molten lava from the main vents pushing up through? I need to know!

Becca19962014 · 03/04/2021 11:55

boaty Im wondering the same thing. I've been looking at the two cameras on YouTube.

New fissure is opening up right now!

sonjadog · 05/04/2021 13:56

It is fascinating how quickly the new fissure is growing! If I was one of those people standing nearby, I think I would get out of there pretty fast!
