Is quite interesting and hypnotic to watch the slow spread

I wondered if they are scientists. I'm amazed general public can get so close! The British public certainly couldn't be trusted 🤣

They're the descendants of Vikings. Hard as nails!
Bawdrip · 20/03/2021 20:21

Of course! Just imagine if it was here. So many burns victims...

PuffinShop · 20/03/2021 21:18

They are not really supposed to be going so close - it is against official advice anyway. The scientists are in planes and helicopters.

Lava moves very very slowly generally, so it cannot 'catch you' but it theoretically could spurt if you stand in the wrong place, or if it hits a wet spot there could be a steam explosion. I believe the main danger is from poisonous gases - I assume the people are being careful to stay upwind at least, but if the wind changed or stopped they could be seriously poisoned, especially because the fissure is in a valley.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 20/03/2021 21:33

Thank you!! Going to show it to DS tomorrow, he will love it.

yeOldeTrout · 20/03/2021 21:36

W o W .....

yeOldeTrout · 20/03/2021 21:37

Fucks sake, there are people walking all around the edge of the lava flows on the hillsides (scroll back to day time footage). I know it's what volcanologists do, but eek.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 20/03/2021 21:41

This is amazing. Thank you!

cricketmum84 · 20/03/2021 21:42

Amazing! Love things like this. Just hope everyone remains safe.

Nacknick · 20/03/2021 21:44

A guy just stepped in front of the camera and gave a thumbs up!

en0la · 20/03/2021 21:46

@Bawdrip

Does anyone know what the people ate doing?
Waiting for the sheep to be barbecued?
AliceSprings123 · 20/03/2021 21:48

WOW!

megletsecond · 20/03/2021 22:43

The blue lights are helicopters?
One is parked and there's two in the air?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 21/03/2021 01:21

As are many Britons.

Yes but when you go there, literal Vikings everywhere. Hire car company? Viking. Shop? Viking. Hotel? Viking.
lightand · 21/03/2021 06:02

I cant seem to get the video right now. Perhaps it is not a 24 hour live feed?

lightand · 21/03/2021 08:28

I think I am getting it now, but it is very misty.

PuffinShop · 21/03/2021 09:59

Just saw something interesting in the news, apparently some of the people around the eruption site yesterday were archaeologists documenting a possible settler burial site before it literally disappeared under the lava!

Ísólfur the settler apparently wanted to be buried 'in his geldings' favourite spot' - which is why the valley is called Geldingadalur and the eruption Geldingadalsgos.

That's probably more time pressure than archaeologists are generally used to!

boatyardblues · 21/03/2021 10:01

That’s fascinating Puffin. Thank you for sharing.

TyneTeas · 21/03/2021 16:16

It hasn't half expanded since yesterday!

And now with an inset picture up close at edge

lightand · 21/03/2021 16:31

Yes, it is looking very dramatic!

boatyardblues · 21/03/2021 17:20

I noticed flashes from the hillside opposite earlier every time it did something exciting, presumably photographers. There’s quite a crowd there now.

Littlepaws18 · 21/03/2021 17:40

That's awesome x

icheatatscrabble · 21/03/2021 17:50

this is brilliant!

I can't believe how many people there are really close to it! if it was the UK there would be people trying to lob wheelie bins into it and stuff to see what happened
