Can we list the inconsistencies in F.R.I.E.N.D.S just for funsies?

I know it’s probably been done many times before but I’ve just noticed one I can’t believe I hadn’t seen before!

  • when Joey is about to act in the war film with Gary Oldman, Phoebe doesn’t know who they fought in WW1 but in the Thanksgiving episode she was a nurse in the same war in a previous life.

So she would have known they fought the Germans!

Oh! When they show the exterior of the apartment block, there are no balconies. But Monica has a balcony.

newlabelwriter · 09/02/2021 19:25

I can’t remember which series is but at the end of one Rachel has really long extensions in and at the start of the next series is wearing the same outfit but has had them all cut out. I guess they never imagined binge watching and Netflix when they were made 😉

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 09/02/2021 19:28

Rachel’s really long hair was awful! It didn’t suit her and it was in such bad condition on the ends.

Anyone else struggling to believe that neat freak Monica would sit around with a beer in someone else's pristine white wedding dress, let alone do the washing up in it?! I love that episode though. HATE the headdress.

Plonque · 09/02/2021 19:36

I can forgive them for Rachel not knowing Chandler in the pilot. It was the pilot, they had no idea when they made it if it was even going to get picked up let alone become the phenomenon that it did with all the entwined stories that happened.
Plus, I don't think it's all that unbelievable to barely register an old friends brothers friend that you might have met twice or three times nearly ten years later, even if you did snog them (she was fall down drunk in that episode too remember!)

@JengaJanga

Have you ever googled there names and pressed the icon to the right....

They are all different

Thats amazing!!!!
Queenoftheashes · 09/02/2021 19:48

@TravellingSpoon

Also, Ross says he hates ice cream, but in the episode he reunited with Marcel he ate it.
Yes and he also I'm sure suggests going to get some ice cream when Rachel tells him she wants to take a break
Flittingaboutagain · 09/02/2021 21:11

I think he suggests frozen yoghurt not ice cream?

Heavymetaldetector · 09/02/2021 21:32

Phoebe says her bd is February 16th in the episode where she is trying to bond with Frank junior but in season 8 she has a dinner party for her birthday right after Halloween. This always annoyed me because surely when you write a show you decide on a character's dob then stick to it?

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 09/02/2021 22:01

The door numbers change.....4 & 5 on the top floor of what looks like a huge building block , then they are 19 & 20.

SheilaFentiman · 10/02/2021 00:33

Yes, he does threaten that!

SheilaFentiman · 10/02/2021 00:36

Oops, thread updated without me looking...

@TheChosenTwo the birth mother, Erica when asked this said when she went for her scans and they kept referring to both heart beats, she thought they meant hers and the baby. Not 2 baby heart beats.

Also both Ross and Monica are the 2 most neurotic characters on TV!

TheChosenTwo · 10/02/2021 07:04

@K1ran I remember this but as adoptive parents it’s impossible that no one mentioned this to them, or that Erica didn’t get scan photos for baby A and baby B, just the whole thing really!

PowerslidePanda · 10/02/2021 08:56

Yep - I'm a twin mum and there is simply no way of mis-interpreting the scans! It's not just the comments about the heart beats - the first thing they ask you at each appointment is where each twin is in the womb and which one is twin A, so that they don't write the wrong results against the wrong baby. There are also constant comparisons of their size, because even if both are on track, if the difference is 20% or more then they need to look at delivering early, etc.

Maireas · 10/02/2021 16:43

I think the story about Erica is that she's not very bright (details of the father etc) do maybe she wasn't paying attention at the scans?
It was a sweet outcome for Monica and Chandler, though.

AnnieJ1985 · 10/02/2021 17:50

In the wedding dress scene with Monica, Rachel and Phoebe wearing dresses drinking beer, Monica has black tights on, which she didn't have on earlier - in coffee house, she has bare legs as Phoebe sees the garter - so she must have put on tights with the wedding dress. That just doesn't make sense!

The inconsistencies due to storylines from years apart not matching up properly are less annoying that blatant continuity errors.

Also, when it was show first, we didn't have widescreen TV, but now in re-runs you can see more of the "edges"

EG when Chandler wakes up with Janice (the one where Joey got with her friend, and they didn't realise Janice was coming), in the original broadcast you couldn't see Janice in bed until it panned out a bit. Now on reruns you can see her there.

And in the one where they think the stripper stole Ross's wedding ring (for Emily), they book the stripper to come to Chandler's office. You can now see Joey, slightly off camera at the edge, laughing into his hand (he isn't meant to be on screen, so I assume he was trying to hold it together instead of ruining the shot)

Now that I mention Ross's ring for Emily- that his Grandmother smuggled into America or something - would that not have gone to Carol? OK, she might have given it back, but would you really recycle it? Then when Rachel has Emma, his mum gives him ANOTHER ring (or the same one again??) to propose.

My last one (for now, I need to get a hobby!) - it drives me nuts how "old" the Gellers and Richard act, when they are meant to be about 50! Richard quips that it is fun hanging out with Chandler and Joey because all his own friends talk about is guess who died shovelling snow.

MaddieElla · 10/02/2021 18:05

It has always bothered me that Monica’s apartment, particularly the kitchen, isn’t neat at all. Too cluttered. Stuff everywhere.

A true neat freak would hate all that clutter!

BitOfFun · 10/02/2021 19:55

Absolutely, MaddieElla! How does she manage all the various catering events with hardly any work space?

VanGoghsDog · 10/02/2021 20:00

Didn't granny Geller die in series one - so the ring wasn't available until after her death?

GellerYeller · 10/02/2021 20:16

Have we mentioned that in one episode Ross is described as a medical miracle: 'they thought she was barren!' and in a later show Jack has married Judy because of pregnancy. She was using contraception: 'your dog thought my diaphragm was a chew toy'!

EyeDrops · 10/02/2021 20:43

It's such a minor thing but bugs me every time. The NYE episode when Joey finally kisses Janine right at the end, and the next episode opens with him running immediately next door to tell Monica and Chandler. And his shirt is COMPLETELY different, like, not even close. DID HE CHANGE HIS SHIRT IN THE HALL?? I honestly get rage about this one, because it would have been so easy to do something about!

aliloandabanana · 10/02/2021 20:58

One thing I've noticed, but might just be my lack of knowledge of the US education system, is that Rachel jokes about her lack of educational achievement - that she wasn't very academic and didn't do too well at school, so I assumed she left at 18. But then later on there's the episode with Winona Ryder which seems to be about what they got up to at university...

JackieweaverhasALLtheauthority · 10/02/2021 21:17

Loads and loads of people go to 'college' in America that wouldn't go in the uk. A normal American high school diploma without AP courses is the equivalent of 5 gces at A*-C

RomeoLikedCapuletGirls · 10/02/2021 23:13

Just thought of another. At the beginning when Rachel’s hair hasn’t yet been given the “Rachel cut” and her snooty friends (with the elbows) come to visit, there is scene in the coffee house where her hair suddenly flips forward to the Rachel cut then back.

I always preferred her hair in a short bob when she was dating Tag
