How does one fart?

Reading a post today about someone's DP farting whist she ate and another about adult DSS comic farting I started wondering, what is fart etiquette in your relationship/family/home?

Do people fart openly? Leave the room? Leave the bed before releasing? Say 'excuse me'? Laugh each time? What is typical fart behaviour?

@CandleWick4

likeamillpond I very much take issue with that snarky comment. Firstly you have absolutely no idea how old I am or whether I’ve been ‘burnt’ or not, so insinuating that I treat my husband like a mate and that there is no romance or sexiness is odd. Our marriage is full of love, sexiness and romance - farts and all!!
I am allowed to make a comment. Fyi it was not directed at you. I find it strange that you've taken it personally.
Pebbledashery · 25/01/2021 13:52

I think it's a different ball game when you're pregnant. You can't control that!

CrochetToTheMoon · 25/01/2021 13:53

As and when, we compete sometimes

CandleWick4 · 25/01/2021 13:54

likeamillpond you literally quoted my post and then said those words - at my post. How can you not see that I’d take that personally? I mentioned I farted in front of my DH and you said that you think it’s young ones who don’t care for mystery and romance doing it? Jog on!

Nopreservatives · 25/01/2021 13:54

I can't remember the last time I heard anyone in this house fart, apart from maybe DH in his "sleep" and I have 2 teen boys. It's just something you don't do around others IMO.

likeamillpond · 25/01/2021 13:55

@Givemeabreak88

It’s really not that hard to hold in a fart, the same way you would hold it in if you was somewhere public? Hmm you don’t just see loads of people wondering around unable to hold them in, it’s funny how people seem to manage in public in front of other people
Exactly. People manage to hold them in for meetings and interviews. It's not that difficult to hold one in, unless you have a medical condition, in which case it's understandable.

I I quoted your post because you said this was an interesting topic. I agree. Everything else we will have to Beg to differ.

Yep, I’ve noticed how it’s the same people saying they don’t fart in front of extended family or friends are the same ones asking how you can possibly manage to in front of a partner, presumably the same way they hold it in in front of others! Or is it just their partners they can’t manage that with Hmm it’s funny how they manage to in other social situations.

CandleWick4 · 25/01/2021 14:05

likeamillpond I don’t think we will beg to differ. You can’t make passing assumptions on someone’s marriage and happiness, aimed at me or no, based on the fact people fart in front of each other. Honestly if you can’t do a fart in front of someone you’re married to and share everything with then I feel bad for you. Done on this thread.

Oh additionally if it’s quite musical we’ll say “i’ll name that tune!”

Frodont · 25/01/2021 14:09

If anyone in our family constantly did loud smelly farts 'in public' I'd assume they had something wrong with them. We aren't a farty family!

CrochetToTheMoon · 25/01/2021 14:10

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

If I think I am 'building one up' I sneak out of the room and insert a party whistle into my backside - you know the sort that unrolls with a feather on the end - and then I come back into the room and 'set' the whistle off.

It always goes down very well in the Cabinet Office, especially if the meeting is dragging on a bit. Grin

😂😂
torquewench · 25/01/2021 14:16

I asked my friend's son to "pull my finger" once and let rip (I'd had a wine or two at the time 😳). He's never fallen for it again since. ExH was a performance farter but his were nowhere near as amusing as mine...

BaggoMcoys · 25/01/2021 14:16

I prefer to try and be discreet about farting. I don't like doing them in front of other people. My ex loved farting and found them all hilarious, especially his own. He made a big show of it. I didn't like it, but was a bit more relaxed about mine in front of him as a result. I still tried to keep it private though unless it couldn't be avoided. I had a bad case of chronic constipation for a few months during our relationship, and it was terrible. Especially at night, I couldn't help it at all but the smell was like death. Blush

I don't mind so much if people fart in front of me, but really don't like it being made a big deal out of in any way. My 6 year old dd finds farts funny, I think with her dad being the way he is, it was kind of inevitable. She doesn't seem to fart in front of strangers or less immediate family though and I think she'd be embarrassed if she did. I'm dating someone new now and haven't heard him fart. I don't think he's heard me, unless I've done it in my sleep, but I hope not! I like to have a bit of mystery.

Wow, she really hit a nerve with you....
FrangipaniBlue · 25/01/2021 14:30

Farts should be like laughter....

"Loooonnggg and looouuddd and cleeeeaaarrr!!!!"

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 25/01/2021 14:33

I hardly ever fart. It's just the way I'm made. DH would try not to fart in my presence and nearly always succeeded. Farting in company is considered rude/uncouth in my family. If one slips out unexpectedly we either say nothing or issue a brief apology - unless it's particularly loud or smelly in which case there may be a laugh and protests.

I once had a ONS with a bloke who jumped out of bed in the morning, let out three very loud farts and clearly thought this inordinately funny. That's why it was a ONS. I found it really coarse behaviour.

HarrysWife · 25/01/2021 14:34

No issues doing it in front of DH (unless its continuous and stinks, thats not cricket). I fart a lot in my sleep apparently Grin.

With DC I tried not to do it in front of them. Not sure why. However now they are disgusted by it Shock. If one slips out from me in their company they ignore it (I blame DH if I can get away with it). If DH does it they tell him hes disgusting. If they do one I ignore it and they say excuse me. No idea why they're like that.

HarrysWife · 25/01/2021 14:41

Im genuinely perplexed by this. So Farting in company is considered rude/uncouth in my family, however you follow it with I once had a ONS with a bloke and because he farted I found it really coarse behaviour. and you never saw him again.

So its ok to have sex with someone you just met and never see them again but not ok to fart in front of someone? Not judging either comment, just interested in your opinions.

If you have IBS it actually can be quite hard to hold a fart in. Also as I said, I am not going in and out of the room all the time to fart

Well unless you have a medical condition then it really isn’t difficult and as I said people manage to hold them in in public or at meetings/work etc

DinosaurDiana · 25/01/2021 14:46

When you get to my age you don’t even know you’re going to do one 🤣🤣🤣

lynsey91 · 25/01/2021 14:47

@likeamillpond

I agree it's not very sexy to fart in front of your partner or husband or vice versa Accidental ones are ok. II'd be interested to know whether OW and OM fart in front of their affair partners. Or do they try and retain some mystery and romance?
I didn't realise that you had to be sexy with your partner all the time!

Me and DH have been married 40 years and are still very much in love. Just because we fart in front of each other and have dared to see each other on the loo does not mean we don't have love and respect for each other.

We don't laugh when we do it because neither of us find it funny but just something we can't help.

I am not the least bit bothered by DH farting in front of me. It's hardly like having an affair is it?

Not everyone manages to hold them in in public/work etc though do they?
