Sitting here waiting for the man to repair my heating and I thought I’d start a new book. It’s an out of print one from the 1970s that I’d been searching for ages. I picked it up and flipped through to find a rather surprising bookmark. I’ll post it a bit later just to keep you all guessing. 😀

I wonder though, have you ever flipped through a book and found something odd, surprising, intriguing or unexpected? I would love to hear about it. 🙂

Haha. How mortifying! It isn’t a dirty love letter but it could be considered quite raunchy. That’s my second clue. No one picked up on my first. I’ll repeat it. One of the first ten posters was very close!

Come on Miss Marples, there is a very obvious question you could have asked me!

Flyer for a strip club?

@VienneseWhirligig

Weirdest thing I found was a list of TV chefs. I had borrowed the book from my nan so I asked her about the list and she said she had been looking for it - she writes their names down so she can remember who they are. Doesn't do it with anyone else off the telly, just Antony Worrall Thompkinson and his pals.
Oh Viennese - your nan sounds just lovely!

I once found a letter from a man explaining to a woman why he wanted their relationship to be platonic.
And a newspaper-clipping in which "Herr Hitler" was described as re-introducing the Divine Right of Kings.
A typed letter from 1922 (?) raving about Tarzan and the song'Avalon'.

An inscription from the Prime Minister of Canada McKenzie King to the Princess Cantacuzène (grand-gaughter of Ulysses S.Grant). King had origanally written a friendly, warm dedication, but had then added bits about "from my country to yours" between the lines to make it less personal. I believe he thought that his late mother would be upset if he got involved with a woman. archive.macleans.ca/article/1951/12/15/the-secret-life-of-mackenzie-king-spiritualist

In an old out of print book by a favourite dead author, I found a postcard she had written to a friend or perhaps one of her readers.
Hollybutnoivy · 12/01/2021 14:44

Was it one of those erotic postcards from 100 years ago with a bit of ankle showing?

thosetalesofunexpected · 12/01/2021 14:44

Was it empty tampon container
or
Empty food packaging of some sort
Or
Was it playing cards packaging empty ones or full set ones then?

I like enjoying this Op

WinterIsGone · 12/01/2021 14:44

I love the idea that this could be considered raunchy
Channelling the Rolling Stones, maybe I should have said a vintage Mars bar wrapper Wink

Mia184 · 12/01/2021 14:46

Is it a pair of knickers? I mean the itsy bitsy kind of knickers.

I once found a professionally done picture of a family in a book once.

ClinkyMonkey · 12/01/2021 14:47

Fabulous thread. I feel like I need to start rifling through my books looking for stuff I've thought was lost for years!

JaneJeffer · 12/01/2021 14:48

A sanitary towel?

SpiderGwen · 12/01/2021 14:48

oakleaffy · 12/01/2021 14:49

A TV programme about libraries aeons ago spoke of bookmarks, and a condom was one!
It didn’t specify new or used😳

FlamedToACrisp · 12/01/2021 14:51

A Curly Wurly wrapper...

I love the idea that this could be considered raunchy Grin

Hey, no kink-shaming!

Tempusfudgeit · 12/01/2021 14:52

Looking through my great-great- grandmother's Bible I found an unused ticket to the 1939 San Francisco Expo. On the back: 'No Refunds. Even if Hitler marches across Europe'.

ClinkyMonkey · 12/01/2021 14:53

Book from 1970s .... was it a stick from a fondue set? Or a piece of garish orange and brown wallpaper?

AgainstTheCurrent · 12/01/2021 14:55

Ohh I reckon something to do with Princess Margaret then? In the first 10 posters and considered raunchy.

I really should be working though and actually went back to first page to count down the posts - I really hope your heating engineer gets a move on, I have a meeting at 4 Grin

LaMarschallin · 12/01/2021 14:56

Is it a copy of the photograph of PM in a bubble bath wearing only her tiara?

DaphneBridgerton · 12/01/2021 14:57

Is it a nude photo or cutting from a porno mag?

ClinkyMonkey · 12/01/2021 14:57

Missed the bit about it possibly being considered raunchy, so my guesses are definitely wrong!

sadie9 · 12/01/2021 14:58

A condom wrapper.

sg622 · 12/01/2021 14:59

I once found a ticket to a Port Vale football match in a book. It wasn't a second hand book, I had read it before and only discovered it when I decided to reread many years later. I still wonder how it got there. I guess I must have lent it to someone at some point and they put it there - but I live in Scotland so even that is a bit of a stretch!

thosetalesofunexpected · 12/01/2021 14:59

@Defaultname
Just a random thought that letter you found in second hand book from Canadian prime minister could be possible be of historical significance to a museum of some kind.??😕
Could be valued too somewhere

sadie9 · 12/01/2021 14:59

A pair of black lacy knickers that don't belong to you.
(well that's what Mumsnetters find quite a lot)

WinterIsGone · 12/01/2021 15:00

Running with the Princess Margaret angle, a signed photo of Roddy Llewellyn...
