Sitting here waiting for the man to repair my heating and I thought I’d start a new book. It’s an out of print one from the 1970s that I’d been searching for ages. I picked it up and flipped through to find a rather surprising bookmark. I’ll post it a bit later just to keep you all guessing. 😀

I wonder though, have you ever flipped through a book and found something odd, surprising, intriguing or unexpected? I would love to hear about it. 🙂

I found a dried four-leaf clover once, was delighted!

Chabbylis · 12/01/2021 13:52

An old £1 note?!

chocatoo · 12/01/2021 13:54

old crisp packet?....I'm just putting anything really so I don't lose the thread. Dying to find out what it was (yes, this is as exciting as my life gets at the moment).

I found an old photo of someone's cat in a charity shop book once.

I used to be a librarian and we found all sorts of things used as bookmarks including bacon just like a pp, underwear, lettuce leaves, nude Polaroids, receipts, tickets, Christmas tags, string, money.

This is as exciting as it gets here too. Until the heating man arrives...

I opened a second hand book to read in bed and lots of sand fell out and a postcard from Barbados... so must have been Bajan sand!
All in my bed though 🙄

Sand is it sand???

I found an invite to the opening of the Severn bridge in a second hand book once, I still have it.

@EBearhug

When I was working in a library - a slice of cooked bacon.
At least it was cooked- the one I found when I was a library assistant was raw! Envy

My DH's stag do ended up at our flat and one of the stags had brought cut-out pictures from a porn magazine to hide around the place, and which I kept on finding for about two years afterwards. They were in books, in packs of cards, inside photo frames... for all I know there might still be one inside a book over 20 years later.

SingingSands · 12/01/2021 14:01

I've found lovely photos of someone's dogs on a beach and a calling card from Lady [forget], advising of her change of address.

Was it from Isambard? 😀

I found ticket stubs to a basketball game in Texas (or Colorado?) in a book my colleague passed on to me from her children to mine!

Mochudubh · 12/01/2021 14:02

A Spanish lottery ticket from 1996 (in 2020).

@Giggorata

Kraft cheese slice
Ugh. I did genuinely find this once in a uni textbook. It was rather grim.

How 1950's of the stag. I wouldn't have been impressed with that Hmm

A printout of a Mills and Boon book cover in a children's book from the library Grin

I love that story! Did the book smell of ozone and suntan oil and steamy beach sex! 😂

@draughtycatflap didn't he die before it was finished? Off to Google that.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 12/01/2021 14:06

I found a receipt for the book - it was at an 'Evening With The Author' event. I know, because I was at the same event all those years ago!

Frownette · 12/01/2021 14:06

@Shaniac

Money? I once found a Russian banknote and also a love letter in 2nd hand books.
That's quite romantic - was the love letter in Russian as well?

My marriage certificate. I wondered where it had gotten to. Blush

NancyPickford · 12/01/2021 14:07

A receipt from a “ladies’ outfitters” dated 1936. It was handwritten and the customer had bought a pair of stays and a packet of towels. It came to something like 39/11d (for those of you who may know old money).
