Sitting here waiting for the man to repair my heating and I thought I’d start a new book. It’s an out of print one from the 1970s that I’d been searching for ages. I picked it up and flipped through to find a rather surprising bookmark. I’ll post it a bit later just to keep you all guessing. 😀

I wonder though, have you ever flipped through a book and found something odd, surprising, intriguing or unexpected? I would love to hear about it. 🙂

I am not a neat freak and still wouldn't use bacon! The grease stains for starters... I tend to use receipts and tickets these days (or dust jackets flaps if it is a hardback) but I did find a stash of proper old school book marks the other day so might start to use those again

I wouldn't use bacon but nor would I have chosen wrapped/unused/used (really?!) condoms as my marker of choice, but they were very popular suggestions before the OP revealed the bottom line.

@Tzimi Yes, we have a phone box library/book exchange in my village! It gives you a fair idea of the reading interests of the community. I also like the idea of finding books (and weird things left in them!) in odd places. What's it called? Guerilla book distribution? Smile

Tzimi · 14/01/2021 19:38

@SomewhatBored I can't remember! If my bookmark falls out for any reason, it takes me ages to work out where I was in the book!

Tzimi · 14/01/2021 19:41

@unlikelytobe Well, the books I contributed disappeared pretty quickly, so they must have been popular! And I really enjoyed the ones I took away too..

@draughtycatflap There you go, I've found the picture in my grandmother's book! Who knows, someone might recognise him...

I found a very large dried cannabis leaf in a second hand copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray about 30 years ago. Weirdly, I was just talking about yesterday to the family.

A receipt from 1996.
I started a thread about it!

Think Ive told this before on here, nobody ever believes this story in real life but when I was around 17 we went around to some guys house, first and only time I went there. I was casually flicking through the books when a piece of paper fell out. It was a list of names, and my (rare) full name was on it.

I also bought a second hand copy of The Bosnian Chronicle and found out it was signed by Alija Izetbegovic. Proper piece of balkan history

longtompot · 16/01/2021 10:49

I bought a Jasper Fforde book from a charity shop and it had one of his limited edition bookmarks in it.
My yd took a book out of the library and it had a post it stuck inside with this written on it (attached photo). We are not a religious family at all, but I thought it was quite sweet. I'd love to know who wrote and why they chose to put it in a book. I wonder if they did it to all their borrowed library books?

One day, someone's going to start a Chain Letter, complete with a curse for non-compliance, in a bookmark.

Devora13 · 16/01/2021 21:27

I have found what appeared to be family photos in a second hand book. Couldn't return as I picked it up from some charity book sale somewhere or other, not even sure where.

these are lovely...even the rude pic Grin

I bought this book from a stall on the market for 10p. I found lots of dried violas inside with seedheads and last year bunged them in one of my seed propagators. They germinated and I had a lovely show of plants and flowers

Not the musical instrument, then? I'd never heard of the flower.

Well, after a quick google, I can now answer the question:

"Which girls's school-story has an introductory quote by Arnold Bennet, and begins with one girl slipping a ring on another girl's engagement-finger?".

I'll have to find a copy!
