Anyone fancy a new jigsaw thread?

Hello all.

I really enjoyed the last jigsaw thread which was going on during the summer and wondered if anyone fancied sharing any pictures of jigsaws that are currently being done?
I'm nearly finished with my Disney Christmas one. A nice easy one which has only taken me a couple of days.
The weather is grim today so I expect it will be finished very soon! I will post a full picture once it is complete.
Would love to see your jigsaws....

Oooh I got a jigsaw roll mat as a Christmas present! Also a 2000 piece jigsaw, which I’m a little daunted by.

toomuchlikemyusername · 01/01/2021 22:00

Theduchess my DP thinks there should be official names for the pieces, but his googling has yielded nothing. So he just throws some shapes using his arms to try to describe what he's looking for.
I'd be interested to know if there are proper names for the shapes. Surely there must be....

Arriving at jigsaws only this xmas with my first ever and then discovering this thread and that my Sherlock Holmes jigsaw having a missing piece, I have to say I'm shocked by how common missing pieces seems to be!!

Where are all the missing pieces? What happens to them? Why does it happen?

I'm miserable about my Sherlock Holmes efforts and the missing piece hole staring me in the face!

itsmymess I've been doing jigsaws for years (30+!) and the missing pieces of my Christmas puzzle was the first time I've ever had pieces missing from a new jigsaw. Very often they turn up down a sofa cushion or under the edge of a rug or somewhere like that. What make is the puzzle, do they have any info about getting hold of missing pieces?

JaquelineBeanstalk · 02/01/2021 06:43

These are just my names, I don’t know if there are official terms.

4 arms out- snowflake
3 arms out- tunnel
2 arms out on opposite side- hug
2 arms out on adjacent sides- walk the dog
1 arm out- head
No arms- splat
Edges and corners

Ulysses · 02/01/2021 06:57

I love those names @JaquelineBeanstalk! My jigsaw was under the sofa untouched for a year so I expect the one stray piece has been devoured by the Dyson. I had only done the sides and some of the flags and left it on it's green mat to keep it out of the way. My fault!

I've done the World Map jigsaw about 4 times now @SOLINVICTUS, I've got a video of my. 9 yo as a baby ripping it down after I finished it the first time so I might film her doing it today as I need the dining table back.

I really like the look of the Shakespeare puzzle - I think there's been a run on them as I'm sure one was available on prime but now no longer.

Lion King update Grin

@JaquelineBeanstalk - glad it’s not just me Grin
splat is genius....I’ll add that to my list. I like tunnel too. I feel I’ve misnamed my snowflakes after reading your list...snowflakes are totally symmetrical aren’t they? I’m just not sure I can rename them at this stage in my puzzling career without completely confusing myself!

InMySpareTime · 02/01/2021 08:57

I call the "3 arms out" pieces Rockets as then I can sort them by orientation (sometimes you can tell which way up pieces should go). Eg up/left/right/down rocket.
I'm currently doing a fiendish puzzle DS got me for Christmas. Dalmatians, which are hard enough, but the puzzle is double sided and same picture (turned 90 degrees) on the back, cut from both sides.
It'll take a while!

Hazelmazel · 02/01/2021 09:55

Delaying starting my next puzzle until I've done some knitting, I fear it might take over for a while when I get going on it! 😆

I'm working on this Cloudberries one today. It's symmetrical, which seems to make it both harder and easier at the same time!

I have that one @bottersnikes, did it during lockdown. I gave up trying to sort out the pieces and just rummaged through the box until it was done! Somehow it was easier that way.

I love cloudberries puzzles, they are beautiful and so well made.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 02/01/2021 12:33

@icebearforpresident

Has anyone ever bought anything from George Whinstable? They’re stalking me around Facebook & Instagram with the most gorgeous puzzles but I’m always hesitant to buy from ads on Facebook.
Yes, DH got me a puzzle from there for Christmas. It's pictures upthread. Lovely images and quality pieces. Go for it!
Hazelmazel · 02/01/2021 12:37

@icebearforpresident I've also bought from George's Whitstable, my Lego mini figures puzzle is from there. They have really good customer service - they sent me one wrong puzzle and sorted it out really quickly.

Jaws coming along nicely!

icebearforpresident · 02/01/2021 16:22

Thanks @Hazelmazel & @DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel, just ordered 2 puzzles from them! The New York Public Library & Park Avenue in Spring, both by Michael Storrings. I signed up to their mailing list and got 15% off as well so under £30 for both including delivery. I’m calling it my New Years present to myself.

poshme · 02/01/2021 16:33

Love the famous five covers!

I'm totally addicted to jigsaws and the moment and keep buying too many...

poshme · 02/01/2021 16:37

Hazelmazel I hoped to get that one for Christmas... but didn't. So I have bought it for myself! Starting this evening.

poshme · 02/01/2021 16:41

This was quite tricky.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 02/01/2021 19:52

@icebearforpresident, I bought the NY Public Library one from there this afternoon too 😄. Went to have a look after I recommended them to you. This thread is proving terrible for my spending habits!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/01/2021 21:49

What a soothing thread. I was given a 1000 piece jigsaw for Christmas but it's lions on the African plain so there's a lot of beige and I prefer a lot of colour. It's still sitting there and I think it might be for some time to come.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 02/01/2021 21:56

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar, Yes I think you've got to enjoy the image/design in your puzzle. Becomes a bit of a chore otherwise.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 02/01/2021 22:02

My Mona Lisa arrived....it's very brown. Lots and lots of brown. ....I also have a feeling that it may be bigger than the actual real life painting, I am going to find a fancy gold frame for it when it is done.

I am cracking on with the NewYork one ...I set up camp in the sitting room, with the covers folded under the board sits nicely on the pouffe, and as I have got most of the left third done I can alternate the two spares boards. I have them organised into shapes, all lined up and in colours. One board for normal pieces and one board for pieces with a white border.

I also realised that one of the big "homeless" bits I had hovering in the centre space actually fitted to a bit already made, so that explained why I could not find any pieces to actually make the join!

DH mocked me a bit for my old lady jigsawing, but he had to find his reading specs to read his PrivateEye so he can talk.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 02/01/2021 23:34

Moomins are finished. The dark green sections were quite challenging and the white ones were a bit tedious at the end bit overall I've really enjoyed it

icebearforpresident · 03/01/2021 11:23

Love the moomins!

I started my Foo Fighters Puzzle last night, the pieces are tiny and there’s lots of straight black lines in the middle of a piece so finding the edges was an absolute bugger. On the plus side the pieces are so small it fits on my puzzle board which I didn’t think it would as it’s square puzzle.
