It's iconic but I've never watched them all, not sure why, but have just seen occasional episodes.

In need of some light relief, I thought I'd have a go at watching them from the beginning. I only made it half way through the first episode.

Even if you leave aside the casual racism and sexism that was of its time, the Del Boy/Rodney relationship is abusive, not funny, isn't it?

Trigger’s broom 😂😂 Although I worked with a load of people who didn’t get the reference 😡😡 Heathens!!

ChristmasUserName2020 · 21/12/2020 11:30

@longwayoff Log it with 101 😂😂

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 21/12/2020 11:30

I have always loved it!!!! The writing is phenomenal.
The relationship between Del and Rodney is so beautiful, it’s a bit tragic but so loving.
I feel a wonderful nostalgia and warm feeling when I watch it.
It will always represent brilliance to me.

The relationship between Del Boy and Rodney is the same as between Steptoe and Son, and Arthur Daley and Terry.

The older man appears to be taking financial advantage of the younger man, and yes you could call it abuse if you liked. The younger man feels put upon, taken advantage of, a victim of emotional blackmail, and is convinced that if he were not held back by the older man he could be independent and would make a fantastic success of his life.

However it is perfectly clear that he actually needs the older man a lot more than he thinks he does. . .

I didn't really get OFAH until I happened to see 'Rock and Chips'. For some reason, after that I got OFAH.

My favourite moment - when the coach blows up on the Jolly Boys' outing. Favourite episode is probably when they win a holiday but Rodney has to pretend to be 14 and Cassandra has to pose as his stepmother. 'Conscripted into the groovy gang' Grin.

Longdistance · 21/12/2020 12:47

I too love Trigger’s broom as a reference. Some people just don’t get it 🤦🏼‍♀️

Love a bit of OFAH to perk me up.
I agree, Cassandra as an actor was pretty bad. Did love the holiday they won and Rodney had to pretend to be Delboy and Cassandra’s son. Rodney bought a lottery ticket and won, but couldn’t claim as Delboy changed his DOB on his passport.

formerbabe · 21/12/2020 12:53

Quite a sad, dark episode is A Royal Flush where Rodney starts seeing an aristocratic woman...Del gate crashes a posh dinner Rodney is invited to and really embarrasses him. Del then accepts money from the girls dad to keep Rodney out of her life

IsolaPribby · 21/12/2020 12:54

The episode where they appear running out of the mist dressed as Batman and Robin. Just priceless!

And the one where they win the £6 million.

I do think that they should have stopped there, though. The episodes after that were not as well thought out.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 21/12/2020 12:57

Del then accepts money from the girls dad to keep Rodney out of her life

But the money is to be given to Rodney who naturally declines it, and Del bollocks him when he finds out Sad.

The bit where they are at the opera and Del keeps noisily trying to give them ice cream cones always makes me cringe.

Oh yeah, you're right actually...I forgot it happened like that. Yes the scene at the opera is excruciating.
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/12/2020 13:05

I really rate grandads funeral episode- outstanding writing, so sad but still those comedy moments

Least fav episode is video nasty- I still don’t quite understand it.

Arboria · 21/12/2020 13:06

It’s an absolutely superb comedy!

IRememberMySpaceBabe · 21/12/2020 13:10

I absolutely love it. I remember watching it (and lots of the repeats) with my mum.

I really love terrible-cook Granddad with the ‘Del Boy.....I’ve burned your pitttzaa’...I love Raquel singing with Tony Angelico, I love Marlene and Tyler’s matching outfit, I love Uncle Albert fallin’ dahn the ‘aul...I love the one with the Peckham Spring....DH likes it too so thankfully never whinges when I want to watch it!

Totally agree with this - as much as I love it, I see this one as the proper ending.
Chardonnay73 · 21/12/2020 13:14

Last night I watched the one where they sell the watch and finally became millionaires.
The bit where Rodney buys Del the Rolls Royce as a thank you for bringing him up all those years, and then where they walk into the pub and everyone stands to their feet and gives them a round of applause... well, I was an emotional wreck 🤦‍♀️

formerbabe · 21/12/2020 13:15

Yes once they sold the watch and became millionaires it should have ended. The episodes after that were never the same imo.

FizzyPink · 21/12/2020 13:15

When the theatres reopen, anyone that loves it needs to go and see the show. It’s honestly the best thing I’ve ever seen in a long time. DP and I were crying with laughter

OhWhyNot · 21/12/2020 13:21

We recently watched the episode where Rodney gets married it’s very moving and I did cry again

I agree when they became millionaires they should have left it then on a high that’s what we all wanted for them and the last two episodes were absolutely brilliant. We are watching it tonight

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 21/12/2020 13:21

Absolutely love it. Bore off Biscuit

OhWhyNot · 21/12/2020 13:23

My favourite is the blow up dolls and chain gang

ageingdisgracefully · 21/12/2020 13:24

Absolute comedy gold. I agree it went on for a bit too long though.

Trig has to be the best comedy character ever.

Highlights for me:
Cwyin'
Rodney wearing a stick-on ponytail to try to impress Cassandra.
Jolly Boys' Outing must be best episode ever.
Rodney winning the art competition and Cassandra posing as his stepmother.
Anything Grandad is in.
The Bar incident - Del's timing is spot on and Trig's face is a picture.
The Blowup Dolls - nuff said.
Gold Chain Man and the pretend heart attacks.
Duke the dog drugged up on Albert's tablets.
It manages to incorporate sadness as well.

Aposterhasnoname · 21/12/2020 13:26

Anyone who thinks it’s not funny has clearly never seen the look on Rodneys face when the chandelier falls. I honestly couldn’t breathe for laughing the first time I saw that.

SillyUnMurphy · 21/12/2020 13:26

Oh for God’s sake. Go and watch the Vicar of Dibley, where you can become very unoffended then.

SueEllenMishke · 21/12/2020 13:27

It's the best comedy ever made and I WILL NOT HEAR OTHERWISE!

Yes!!!! I agree.
The relationship between Del and Rodney isn't abusive. Del is very much a father figure and while his actions are misguided at times it's clear he loves him deeply.

It's very funny and is one of the few programmes I can watch over and over again.

SillyUnMurphy · 21/12/2020 13:31

@ChristmasUserName2020

Trigger’s broom 😂😂 Although I worked with a load of people who didn’t get the reference 😡😡 Heathens!!
Anything that has to be repaired in our house is from then on referred to as ‘Trigger’s broom’ Grin
