Only Fools and Horses

It's iconic but I've never watched them all, not sure why, but have just seen occasional episodes.

In need of some light relief, I thought I'd have a go at watching them from the beginning. I only made it half way through the first episode.

Even if you leave aside the casual racism and sexism that was of its time, the Del Boy/Rodney relationship is abusive, not funny, isn't it?

The Batman and Robin scene has me cackling.

Sparklingbrook · 21/12/2020 16:01

I don't think it's funny after the initial watch, and I am sick of seeing the clip of DelBoy falling through the bar. Hmm
It's very of it's time, but not laugh out loud funny now.

Slightly connected but I watched a bit of Butterflies recently and that's only not funny but quite depressing. Poor Ria.

HmmSureJan · 21/12/2020 16:03

I'm getting very tired of all the hand wringing and attempting to judge classic and memorable entertainment by today's standards Hmm

There are, of course, certain programmes and narratives that would be totally unacceptable today and they never get repeated and no one thinks they're funny now or "just a laugh" eg "Love Thy Neighbour" and the likes of "Alf Garnett". They were phased out by common unspoken agreement and it seemed to have been done largely without woke, pontificating lectures and reprimands. Let people regulate themselves ffs.

I remember a couple of years ago I joined the DIY On A Budget Facebook group to get some tips and someone had posted a pic of Del’s bedroom for a laugh and asked for opinions.....loads of people were like ‘not my taste but it’s your room hun’ but the people who realised were dropping OFAH jokes like ‘looks lovely jubbly!’ and ‘our mother said on her deathbed never to have a leopard print bedspread’ and so many people didn’t get it, they were accusing the jokers of being ‘negative’ and ‘vile’ and all sorts......it was very funny Grin

I find it funny but I watched a bit of Catheine Tate on iplayer. Quite shocked they let it stay on there. There is a warning though before it starts

flapjackfairy · 21/12/2020 16:23

Oh love it as well.
The scene with Uncle Albert gasping at the wrong moments cracks me up every time. It is a genuinely hilarious programme.
But I feel a bit sad now watching it and thinking of what a sad time the lovely Nicholas Lyndhurst has had this year. My heart goes out to him and his wife .

Its absolutely huge in the Balkans. Ask anybody you know from the ex yugoslavia about it. Its quite common for people to arrive on the plane from Belgrade and places and get straight in a taxi to Peckham.

Killerqueen2244 · 21/12/2020 16:52

OFAH never fails to cheer me up, I loved the characters of Grandad and Uncle Albert, most of their scenes are the funniest because of the way they delivered their lines! Am I missing something or is The Groovy Gang not on Netflix?

I think only a few random episodes seem to be on Netflix! I don’t know why. We got the DVD box set given to us by DH’s granddad a few years ago but there’s one missing disc and the Groovy Gang one is on there so I’ve not seen that in ages
RedRec · 21/12/2020 17:14

Still love Only Fools and Horses. And am not remotely offended by any attitudes / quirks of its time. Always done with warmth and sensitivity and intelligence.
Especially loved the Peckham Spring water episode where they set up a bottling plant in the flat, realising that yuppie types would pay silly money for the tap water they planted a fancy label on. All in lab coats and everything.

Very funny.

Butterflies was dreadful, along with its stable mate Bread. John Sullivan's writing cannot be compared with Carla Lane's. Awful stuff.

longwayoff · 21/12/2020 17:56

That's unfortunate User147, it was filmed on the South Acton Estate, W3 - so was The Bill for a long time. I think a lot of it's been demolished now but I hope they've preserved Nelson Mandela House which wasn't called that, I forget its name. Harlech or Corfe Tower maybe.

Yes, that poor woman in Butterflies I think she was clinically depressed. Meeting Leonard in the park was the highlight of the week. Sad
DGRossetti · 21/12/2020 18:01

Always felt the first series had an edge of social commentary* that was slowly eroded over time. Until it really got to be a shopping list of catch phrases.

*like "Citizen Smith" ...

Janaih · 21/12/2020 18:05

@flapjackfairy I'm not a massive fan but dh is, so its frequently on. That scene is a masterclass in comedy timing Grin

CovidCarol · 21/12/2020 18:22

Love OFAH.
What about when Uncle Albert falls through the Nag's Head cellar, then when they are in court "....and are you the same Albert Gladstone Trotter who fell through......." turns out he made loads of money falling down holes 😂🤣

Coldwinterahead1 · 21/12/2020 18:25

I've been rewarding Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie on iplayer and its not PC at all.

Yes, ‘how about the Thatched Inn, Canning Town?’ Grin

And then Del ends up pushing him out of court in his wheelchair forgetting he’s not actually injured, before realising...that’s one of my favourite episodes

hospitalheist · 21/12/2020 18:35

@user1471565182

I think Denzel and his wife were quitepioneering characters at the time. A black couple who wernt there just to be the target of shit racist jokes.
If I recall correctly there were big plans for the corrine character but the actress died so denzel was left on his own as a character and his wife initially just being referred to then leaving him. I really loved corrine!
Jobseeker19 · 21/12/2020 18:36

@formerbabe

Quite a sad, dark episode is A Royal Flush where Rodney starts seeing an aristocratic woman...Del gate crashes a posh dinner Rodney is invited to and really embarrasses him. Del then accepts money from the girls dad to keep Rodney out of her life
Yes, I agree I disliked Del briefly after that. I thought why did you have to ruin it for him?!
IRememberMySpaceBabe · 21/12/2020 18:38

I’m sure I read somewhere that there’d been some negative feedback from Royal Flush where Del came off as a massive jerk, so they didn’t show him being like that again and they brought Raquel/Cassandra in to soften the vibe......can’t remember where I read that but I’m sure I did somewhere

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 21/12/2020 18:42

More funniest moments:

  • in Miami Twice where Rodney collars Del's lookalike, the Mafia boss and starts bollocking him about Cassandra and 'the bank's conference in Eastbourne'.
  • When they accidentally trap a French bloke in Denzil's lorry and try to pass him off to Raquel as their mate 'Gary' from the pub, but he then replies 'Gary' to everything Raquel says.
