Help with stupidly hard quiz

ApocalypseNowt · 01/12/2020 11:29

Each year my work does a stupidly hard quiz. There are many stages and we get a month to try and do it.

Anyone help me with this stage? there are 21 pictures of celebrities and I've managed to work out who they all are but now I'm stuck on working out the password to the next stage. Each picture has a coloured Roman numeral in it so I assume I have to use those to work out the answer...

R is Julia Roberts

rosegoldwatcher · 07/12/2020 10:48

Who was C?

ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2020 10:48

@SocratiCat that's brilliant! I still don't get which number you use for each name though...am i being thick??

I'm sure McGarnagle must be right but it's not letting me into the next stage - I'll try a few different ways (caps, lower case, etc) Confused

Sorry, I can't count!

I think you're right with Dafoe — SOF would be Streets of Fire.

rosegoldwatcher · 07/12/2020 10:50

@SocraticCat

polkadots murder on the orient express is a good call - does that make it Willem Dafoe?
Yes - Clear and Present Danger, Streets of Fire...
ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2020 10:51

C was Kevin Costner

It's the letter in the surname. So 2D, would be A, second letter of Dafoe.

(I think!)

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 07/12/2020 10:53

D is WIllem Dafoe. I know we probably didn't need to finish, but I wanted to! Grin

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 07/12/2020 10:54

Gah. That'll teach me to refresh! Sorry!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/12/2020 10:55

That was hard!

I'm so glad A was Julie Andrews, I only got it because I often abbreviate The Sound of Music to TSOM anyway! If it had been a different actor/film I don't think I'd have spotted it.

PatriciaHolm · 07/12/2020 10:57

If Mcgarnagle doesn't work, try McBain?

SocraticCat · 07/12/2020 10:57

From the long list across the top;
3E4Z5T1P1S...
Split it into the different number-letter combinations:
3E 4Z 5T 1P 1S...

Then for 3E take the third letter of the surname answer for diamond E, the fourth letter from z, fifth from T etc

That spells out:
SIMPSON'S CHARACTER BASED ON E

Google gave McGarnagle as a Simpson's character based on the Dirty Harry films, but I could be wrong about that... Does anti e have any better suggestions?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/12/2020 10:59

@PatriciaHolm

If Mcgarnagle doesn't work, try McBain?
That's a good idea.

I should have also said how glad I was that Soupy found that in her puzzle book. I wouldn't have guessed at initials otherwise (so so many initials!).

Looking back it makes sense — so many Ts and Os for 'The's and 'Of's.

SocraticCat · 07/12/2020 11:02

Here's the master list for anyone who's missed one:
A - Julie Andrews
B - Sandra Bullock
C - Kevin Costner
D - Willem Defoe
E - Clint Eastwood
F - Jodie Foster
G - Clark Gable
H - Tom Hardy
I - Jason Isaacs
J - Angelina Jolie
K - Ben Kingsley
L - Jack Lemmon
M - Michelle Monaghan
N - Paul Newman
O - Laurence Olivier
P - Michelle Pfeiffer
Q - Kathleen Quinlan
R - Julia Roberts
S - James Stewart
T - Uma Thurman
U - Peter Ustinov
V - Alicia Vikander
W - Sigourney Weaver
Y - Michelle Yeoh
Z - Zhang Ziyi

SoupDragon · 07/12/2020 11:05

There is no way on earth I would have got this without the puzzle book. It's so bloody obscure!

ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2020 11:07

It's Simpson's character based on L which is Jack Lemmon which is Gil! The answer is Gil Grin

Love this op. I conduct similar games in my office

snuffykins · 07/12/2020 11:08

Holy crap, soup is a genius.

PatriciaHolm · 07/12/2020 11:08

excellent! Well done all. Now final test?

SocraticCat · 07/12/2020 11:08

Apocalypsenowt - you're right! I can't count!

ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2020 11:13

I thought there would be one more puzzle but when I put the password in I just got a congratulations message so we're all done!

I think there were a couple of puzzles I didn't put on here as I'd done them myself but I can have a look and post those later if people would like to have a go themselves?

Also wanted to say thank you so much everyone for all your help - I've had so much fun doing this and certainly wouldn't have got this far without you x

Well done everyone! That was tough.

Is there another, last, level?

rosegoldwatcher · 07/12/2020 11:16

Anyone else strangely satisfied that this round also had a popular culture theme? (Although we didn't realise that for a VERY long time!)

@SoupDragon - has saved my sanity I think.
