Welcome into another thread of alternative reality as we try to nagivate through the Coronacoaster of life.

We may be up, down, spinning around (generally in confusion at the next random edict drawn up on the back of a fag packet) but never sucking the joy out of life.

From the mask thread....

I would prefer to wear a mask, even on a fairly empty path outside, for the simple reason that someone may have coughed or sneezed ahead of me. I don't want to walk into their remaining potential Covid cloud

@Lostinacloud

Arghhhhh the thread about the poor kids freezing in their classrooms. Most posters suggesting thermals and hats, scarves and gloves. Just NO!!!!

Why the fuck should our poor children be made to sit in freezing cold classrooms all day every day, why the fuck are people ok with this and when the fuck will people wake up and see that these ridiculous conditions are totally barbaric and utterly unnecessary?

Arghhhhh I despair

I saw this and the responses and it felt surreal. I thought I was losing my mind for a while
WouldBeGood · 06/11/2020 19:21

These threads do make me feel good about myself though 😂

I usually think I’m a bit neurotic and mental. Not any more.

MissEWeatherwax · 06/11/2020 19:23

Doesn’t air move constantly, so in that case you should wear your mask constantly because as soon as you open door, you are letting in the germs.

It’s like we now believe in miasma. They should pack their masks with sweet smelling herbs or hold a pomander in front of their mask because that works for the Black Death. I would happily wear a plague doctor mask, but would probably be arrested.

DrDiva · 06/11/2020 19:25

Re masks: when DH dislocated his shoulder in April the paramedic said he kept forgetting that no one could see his smile any more. So he kept pointing at his face and saying brightly “comforting smile!” It cheered me up no end. The two ambulance crew were just lovely.

My work is going nuts with D-ness. My poor students, they are actually being pretty awesome about this whole mess.

The difficulty with cold classrooms is that moving the air through is the best practical way to keep the viral load in the room down. Schools have been chronically under funded for years. They are crowded and usually poorly designed. They operate on their own universe of thermodynamics, and the heating is ser by a calendar not thermostat. They're not exactly comfortable places anyway. I always went for lots of layers, and one of my favourite work garments is/was a full length cardigan, if I had £1 for everytime I head "Miss, are you wearing a cardigan?"...

School uniform should be suspended though. That would make it easier for children to customise what they wear to stay comfortable. School jumpers tend to be pretty rubbish anyway.

The cold classrooms is again where poor kids will suffer more than wealthy kids. I saw a letter where a school suggested kids wear a thermal layer or a t shirt under their uniform. Lots of families won't be able to afford decent thermals and a t shirt isn't going to make much difference.

If you can layer up half of what you've got, it's better than trying to work with getting that under a school uniform.

I once taught half a school year in a first name, non uniform school, I loved it!
Because they just wore everyday clothes everyday, there wasn't the angst and posturing that you get over a rare non-,uniform day.

Ive just seen the M+S Christmas food advert and clocked the panettone for this year. triple chocolate with chocolate icing on top and decorated with white chocolate drops.
Ooohhh.... Have been asked to buy a Christmas Colin the Caterpillar this year, instead of Christmas cake. I like both. We're getting both.

It’s like we now believe in miasma.

This reminds me, was watching an old episode of Merlin with DS. There was a plague. The king (Anthony Head) was demanding they stop the spread & lock everyone in. It was quite uncannily familiar, even when they wrongly decided the plague was caused by witchcraft. It started to get a bit 2020 with people grassing up other people -and talk of burning at the stake for perceived wrong-doing

MercyBooth · 06/11/2020 20:04

@TheOrchidKiller Check out an episode of 1980s series The Equalizer called The Visitation.

We've been told that when the weather gets colder our school will suspend uniform and let them come in in layers to keep warm. The school tend to do this anyway when it gets really hot - it's a fairly laid back school where uniform's concerned.

You are not 'allowed' to drink on any Antidepressants
Everyone (that drinks) drinks on antidepressants

"They operate on their own universe of thermodynamics, and the heating is ser by a calendar not thermostat."

Ha! Same in healthcare. Despite central heating, our office is so cold in the winter we all sit in our coats (a SW also had a blanket and more than a few keep a hot water bottle at work). Heating goes on Oct 1st and off April 1st. Regardless of temperature.

NastyBlouse · 06/11/2020 20:12

Does anyone else find masked faces disconcerting?

Yes me @TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain. Freaks me out. I hate seeing DH in one.

WouldBeGood · 06/11/2020 20:13

Me too. I find it creepy and dystopian and it stops my little cheery social interactions

MissEWeatherwax · 06/11/2020 20:15

@TheOrchidKiller, I want a Christmas Colin the caterpillar cake, I ordered a Halloween one and they sold out.
Half of MN would either burn us at the stake or put us in stocks. They definitely want to lock us in our houses, preferably with a red cross on door.
I enjoyed Merlin, during first lockdown I watched a Merlin quiz hosted by the actor who played Arthur. Was on YouTube, I did well but no where near who won. All the money raised went to animal charity.

😱 at the idea of sneezes hovering in the air in perpetuity, like a will-o’-the-wisp.
MercyBooth · 06/11/2020 20:20

During lockdown one i watched the whole box set of My Family on BBC i player. Cant understand why the critics slated it. It was hilarious.

MercyBooth · 06/11/2020 20:21

@TrustTheGeneGenie i dont know whether to laugh or cry at that

I dealt with a customer the other week who has problems with his reading glasses steaming up. He was elderly and I said something like at least when he's reading at home they're OK. Apparently at home is the worst thing because he wears his mask in his flat too. All the time. Even though he lives alone and hasn't let anyone inside since March. I was slightly dumbfounded.

TheOrchidKiller · 06/11/2020 20:45

@MercyBooth
I did indeed check the Imdb summary for that Equalizer episode & misread "Dr. Demeter" as "Dr. Dementor".

@MissEWeatherwax thanks for the tip. I might have to order a Colin.

Oh dear. It's concerning that people are that worried.

What?! That is genuinely disturbing.

I'll take the offer of virtual wine, @MissEWeatherwax, as I'm not allowed the real stuff. It's so wonderfully appropriate to your respective usernames that @NannyGythaOgg followed up your post as she did! She'll be offering me Scumble soon. It's only apples. Well, mostly apples....

Stomach settling a bit. Still tired, definitely switching to an evening dose from tomorrow. Also going to take dh's offer of a chill out day tomorrow and mostly hide upstairs while he looks after the dds. He is a bit baffled by me when my head breaks but he is very good about it all really. He just doesn't get it, because he is so even keeled you could sail him to Norway. So extra thanks to those on here who've been there & done it.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 06/11/2020 20:51

Where I am all guidelines have gone out of the window! Especially with the older generation! Some shops are shut and pubs and restaurants but everything else has gone to pot!! Very few masks zero sd people actually hugging in the street!! A quote from a friend today was I'm following 2 guidelines I'll get paid not to work and I won't bother the NHS! It's completely unravelling before my eyes!!
