He was my favourite Bond.

My granny used to tell us how she dated him when she was 15 when she worked for the milk man.

@Abeilles

I don't get the deletions to the video. It's Sean Connery talking, using his own words where he explains that in his opinion some circumstances women being hit by men (when they don't shut up, basically). It's not here say, it's not slander, it's him clearly stating his opinion.

It's who he was just as much as him being the iconic Bond.

Surely, we are able to reflect on the whole person not just the bits which are palatable?

Or are Mumsnet saying - yes we know he advocated slapping women but he's died so let's sweep that under the carpet for today? How many women have died from DV because people sweep things under the carpet and look the other way, because 'he's a good guy, really'?

Just because someone died doesn't mean we have to ignore what they stood for and believed in.

Very well put.

@OgwdihwO

I’ve just seen this! 90’s good innings ! Do you think his grandkids will send him out to sea on a home made raft 🤣
That was Billy Connolly...
TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 31/10/2020 13:49

I’m trying to imagine a situation where a talented, successful white person who had advocated violence towards black people, in some circumstances - like when they were being too “uppity”, say - was being mourned by black people on a site predominantly for black people.

I’m failing to imagine that. Can anyone else manage it?

RainbowParadise · 31/10/2020 13:49

I'll be respectful enough to not use abusive language about him and that's as far as it goes, I have no other respect for a woman beater.

I don't get all the 😢 either, apart from people who knew him and cared about him? He was a 90 year old man who enjoyed a long life with immense wealth and privilege. He was far luckier and had a longer life and better end than most.

JamminDoughnuts · 31/10/2020 13:52

i think you can read into what you want from that video

SinisterBumFacedCat · 31/10/2020 13:52

@Devilesko

RIP Pity people can't be remembered for the work they did. He was of another time, his past life is not comparable to life today. As with any typical 90 year old.
Sorry but there are plenty of 90 year olds out there who do NOT think it’s ok to hit women. Angry

What is there possibly to read into it other than he thought it was acceptable to slap women? Confused
KonTikki · 31/10/2020 13:54

Elderflower 14
I thought it was Billy Connolly.
Too funny for words Grin

Genuinely sorry to hear he has died ....
The best Bond ever.

When a man tells you who he is, believe him.
HeyGirlHeyBoy · 31/10/2020 13:58

My absolute gentleman of a Dad is 2 years behind him and never raised his hand to us or my DM or even a fly. None of this of his time shite. Decent people are decent people and someone who thought this was OK and even openly spoke about it, was not. The amount of people who happily ignore is horrifying.

JamminDoughnuts · 31/10/2020 13:58

you shouldnt speak ill of the dead, particularly the recently departed.

I feel like I’ve gone back into the bad old past.

“Bit”. “Slap happy”. “The wife” Shock

😂😂😂

Yeah, you can't speak ill of the dead, but lads, if 'the wife' won't do as she's told or keep keep quiet, it's fine to 'give her a slap'

Fucking hell wtf is wrong with you

What's your take on Jimmy Savile?
TheSeedsOfADream · 31/10/2020 14:04

My FB is full of people "literally sobbing"
Jesus.
I've helpfully reminded them by sharing the video.

JamminDoughnuts · 31/10/2020 14:06

I think it's clear what my opinion of him is.

I think it's clear that my content was apeing the inclination of some people to minimize that kind of behaviour.

I don't think 'bit' is in fact an archaically unacceptable word, so I shall say I think you're being a 'bit' earnest but very wide of the mark . . .

Everyone's granny in Edinburgh has a SC story. He is kind of iconic but shame he was 'problematic' as dd would say.

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2020 14:13

'Devilesko

Do typical 90yo women think yay to domestic violence? Or when you think of a typical 90yo do you automatically imagine men?

Out of interest?

(Not that there aren't stacks of 90yo men who didn't/don't go in for thumping women, but YKWIM).

Besom · 31/10/2020 14:15

It absolutely was not acceptable even to my grandfather and he was born in 1900 - Victorian.

Nightnurse53 · 31/10/2020 14:16

Wait whike Clint Eastwood dies it will be the same.

It's ridiculous to talk about Connery being 'of his time' as if he were a hidebound provincial old boy with a narrow world view. He left 'his roots' with nary a backward glance and has spend the intervening years on lavish film sets, and flitting from one opulent continental home to another. I suspect he was exposed to enough life to know that most people don't think smacking women around is ok.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/10/2020 14:17

My Dad is 86 and grew up in Edinburgh. His father was violent to his mother and she eventually left him, taking the children with her. My Dad has never, ever been violent to my mother. It's not a generational thing. Plenty of young men right now still stuck in the mindset that an uppity woman needs a slap to put her in her place. Sad Angry
