He was my favourite Bond.

My granny used to tell us how she dated him when she was 15 when she worked for the milk man.

It’s sad that so many women are gushing over him. And people don’t believe internalised misogyny is a real thing

To be fair, I’ve only ever seen him in James Bond and liked his work but never heard these comments before. I’m sure a lot of women are in the same position.

UseOfWeapons · 31/10/2020 13:09

Rest in peace, Sean.

Pasithea · 31/10/2020 13:10

MrsMomoa · 31/10/2020 13:11

popcornlover · 31/10/2020 13:13

Wasn’t he a wife beater? I just love all the adoration for this guy.... wow.

Fair point. I hadn’t seen that video before either but I’m pretty confident a lot of women will somehow be able to overlook that. It happens all the time.

And the Connery era Bond films themselves (plus later ones) were absolutely dripping with misogyny and violence towards women, so the fact they too are celebrated as much as they are is also... indicative of the world we live in.

GabsAlot · 31/10/2020 13:16

exactly the gushing on twitter is really bad i want to throw up

gorgeous man lovely man-no he bloody wasnt

Nightnurse53 · 31/10/2020 13:17

What the FUCK is going on with the deletions on this thread?

We’re not allowed to reference the fact this man was a wife-beater, by his own admission - on MUMSNET???

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 31/10/2020 13:21

@AlCalavicci

Aww no, i could listen to his voice all day such a handsome guy too.

I really hope no one starts digging up old dirt on him now

Don’t worry, no need to dig very far but MNHQ are determined to censor it all apparently, so you can stay in your “”wasn’t he a great chap” bubble.

@TalkingtoLangClegintheDark I'm completely shocked, wtf was that deleted for?

Disgusting.

AintPageantMaterial · 31/10/2020 13:23

I came around a corner in Chester once (about 20 years ago) at the same time as him and we bumped smack into each other and he smiled at me and said “Excuse Me Madam”. It remains a point in my life.

user1471565182 · 31/10/2020 13:25

Never forgot his roots but refused to live in edinburgh, pontificating about scottish independence from abroad. Nationalists are all the same.

Abeilles · 31/10/2020 13:26

I don't get the deletions to the video. It's Sean Connery talking, using his own words where he explains that in his opinion some circumstances women being hit by men (when they don't shut up, basically).
It's not here say, it's not slander, it's him clearly stating his opinion.

It's who he was just as much as him being the iconic Bond.

Surely, we are able to reflect on the whole person not just the bits which are palatable?

Or are Mumsnet saying - yes we know he advocated slapping women but he's died so let's sweep that under the carpet for today? How many women have died from DV because people sweep things under the carpet and look the other way, because 'he's a good guy, really'?

Just because someone died doesn't mean we have to ignore what they stood for and believed in.

GabsAlot · 31/10/2020 13:27

i hate all that theyre dead so lets be respectful

no he wasnt repentant he agreed with hitting women

JamminDoughnuts · 31/10/2020 13:29

GabsAlot · 31/10/2020 13:29

AdoraBell · 31/10/2020 13:30

😥 RIP

Devilesko · 31/10/2020 13:36

RIP
Pity people can't be remembered for the work they did.
He was of another time, his past life is not comparable to life today.
As with any typical 90 year old.

AdultHumanFemale · 31/10/2020 13:36

The announcement / brief obit on R4 earlier made me bristle. Why is the nation so determined to let sleeping woman-beaters lie?

ShirleyPhallus · 31/10/2020 13:38

I think the deletions on this thread will have been because of the names the poster used, rather than the video

If you repost the video I don’t think that would go against talk guidelines

Disgusting and complete horse shit. My grandad would have been 100 if he were still alive and did not think it was acceptable to beat women. Hmm

Wtf is with all the abuser apologists on here?

MrsHound · 31/10/2020 13:42

How sad the world has lost a wife beating misogynist.
How sad the world has lost a professional Scotsman who refused to live or pay his taxes in Scotland, whilst banging the drum for independence.
But worst of all how sad the schedules are going to be full of Bond shite and the news full of self publicists queuing up to say how wonderful he was.

Abeilles · 31/10/2020 13:42

Just seeing if I post the video link with no comments or name calling if the post remains.
This is the video where Sean Connery confirms he stands by his comment about slapping women and goes on to explain in which circumstances it's ok to slap a woman
