Hi all

I couldn’t find the new thread so here is one I set up. It’s windy out there! Glad I weeded my flowerbeds a couple of days ago.
Now it is being reported Wales feel it has not helped, the short lockdown and they won't be doing it again

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-wales-54751375
They don't know whether theyre coming or going do they?

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 15:50

Says everything is opening then, maybe he has just given up on the lockdowns idea then Confused

AllPlayedOut · 30/10/2020 15:51

The latest on BBC I saw they were calling it a 'fire' and the 'wards were on fire' in one hospital...

That's because a Covid ward in Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, Scotland did have a fire. They had to evacuate the patients and direct prospective patients to other hospitals.

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 15:51

If we are looking for evidence based approach why are the rest of the UK not looking to Wales so see if it helps before embarking on similar lockdowns and 'circuit breakers' (I so hate these silly terms)

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 15:53

No the fire one was about Bradford. It was that OTT doctor there dementing. I'll try and find it

Bonfire night and Halloween have come early in Bradford. The hospital is on fire and things are getting scary as more and more wards are engulfed

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/oct/29/national-lockdowns-should-be-backup-plan-on-covid-says-who-envoy

WHO envoy seems to me to be saying local lockdowns are better than national. But I'm sure Welsh Government will continue to follow the science*.

*Where "science" is defined as "those bits of something a scientist once said which appeal to Mark Drakeford".

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 15:54

Sorry to hear about the real fire though, that's terrible Sad

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 15:55

WHO said the lockdowns should only be a 'last resort' measure

AllPlayedOut · 30/10/2020 15:55

Oh sorry. What an incredibly stupid thing to say, I know that it was published yesterday but it seems even more distasteful considering the literal fire Hairmyres had today.

Reedwarbler · 30/10/2020 15:57

Dark and damp here in Glos, but warm at least.
I stopped watching news some time ago and I feel much happier. If I want to know what's going on I'll read it in the paper or Internet. Have to say though I am looking forward to the American election next week because I want to see Trump lose and I want to see him implode when he does so, so it may be a bit nail biting. Both my h and I think he is in the early stages of dementia.
'Killer disease' is as bad, in a different way, as 'global pandemic'. Such tautology really grates, but I have actually heard government ministers refer to it as that. You'd think they'd be better educated.

That's a really badly written article - given the reference to Bonfire Night, I would initially assume that they were indeed talking about a real fire until halfway through the second paragraph.

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 15:59

Not at all Allplayed I didn't realise there had been a real fire...scary isn't it. I guess all that machinery causes risks. There was one with covid wards in another country too I remember in the Spring, Russia perhaps. What a nightmare. Hope everyone was OK.

AllPlayedOut · 30/10/2020 16:00

I agree with everyone that it's incredibly frustrating to see people talking about certain things as though they're unique to Covid. If there are unique features then we should know about it but the way some people talk it does seem as though they think severe illness, post viral syndrome and death didn't exist until Covid. They tried to do the same with ICU Psychosis which isn't a new phenomenon either,

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 16:02

The BBC have been worse lately. This one was bad as well I remember. That awful reporter..

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54648684

They have changed the heading. It used to be Why is it so deadly? Hmm..

A 'hit and run killer'. this time

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 16:04

That one is bad because it focuses on the small amount of severe hospital cases and also doesn't mention things like lung damage can improve- studies have shown recovery now of the lungs in some serious cases

But recovery takes time of course.

AllPlayedOut · 30/10/2020 16:04

orangeblossom7777 I think a few people required some treatment afterwards, but nothing major(I hope) but still a terrifying ordeal for everyone involved and it's caused quite a lot of damage.

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 16:08

Doesn't bear thinking of, for anyone in hospital, staff everyone. Glad to hear mainly OK.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/10/2020 16:29

I'm definitely in disengaged mode this week. Probably a half term survival strategy stuck in most of the time (due to unappealing weather) with two lively children, DH working at home, so many memories of earlier in the summer.

My contribution to the AD mix tape is "Everybody's talkin' at me" pokémon, minecraft, nuclear war, industrial engineering, American election... I can't hear a word they're saying, only the echos of my mind.

Mad World, Tears for Fears or Gary Jules. I like both. I saw Tears for Fears in concert about 15 years ago and they were brilliant. I've only been to a handful of concerts, not enough.

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/10/2020 16:47

I'm kind of distracting myself from half term and the weather I think. Boys playing Minecraft

Gherkinbee · 30/10/2020 16:54

I am so fed up of people using "cos Covid" as an excuse. Tried to get a few friends with kids together for a socially distanced walk around the Halloween houses in our area. None up for it cos they are "isolating". Their kids are in same class as mine and will see them on Monday. They work in customer facing roles involving the public. They have however said we can call to their houses to get some treats. Which means we would would be less than 2m from them. So....that means you're not isolating then? Why not just say you can't be arsed?!! We are getting our costumes on and going anyway (and will be leaving them to their isolation), not letting this year spoil Halloween for the kids 🎃

SirSamuelVimes · 30/10/2020 16:58

Quickly placemarking - hello all.

DrDiva · 30/10/2020 17:06

I hear you on the tautology @Reedwarbler. If I hear “PHE England” one more time I may scream.

I’m a Tears for Fears woman myself.

NannyGythaOgg · 30/10/2020 17:21

I'm making a list of all the suggestions for the play list.

2 categories - A 'Mad World' list - for the situation and a 'Everybody's Talkin' at Me' list - for the personal experience.

All suggestions welcome.

Ibake · 30/10/2020 17:27

Hello all. Got into a fracas last night but actually managed to turn it round with a couple of balanced discussions today but then the truly demented OP has just come back (and I mean it in the literal sense as mum in hospital with covid so she does sound demented/worried/scared etc but shouting at everybody is not going to help)

Anyway my song is Do you hear the people sing from Les Mis

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
